OGL 482 Pro-Seminar II

Module 6 Assignment:
Career Plan
Section 1: Creating your BHAG

Answer the following:

1) What is your BHAG

My BHAG is to open an animal rescue and shelter after retirement. I want to have over 5
acres in Arizona, Colorado, California and Oregon, where me and my husband can open
non-profit animal shelters. Initially we were focused on a dog shelter, but as I looked
further into my passions we knew I would never be able to close my heart to any animal
in need.

2) Why is this your BHAG?

I have always loved animals. When I was a child I didn’t care about barbies or makeup I
wanted stuffed animals, animal figurines, and my favorite was horse statues. As I grew
up I went from collecting animal toy to collecting animals. My first pet was a stray we
adopted from the pound named Sandy. She was my absolute best friend, from nap time
cuddles to exploring the back yard as pirates, we were inseparable. When Sandy got
cancer and died at 12 years old I was heartbroken and absolutely destroyed emotionally.
Ever since then I focused on helping stray animals and any animals up for adoption that
were close to execution. As I grew this never changed but my financial limitations
changed. I went from relying on my parent’s income to support my animal support efforts
to then relying on my minimum wage jobs. Once I started my career with Boeing I had
two very anti-social dogs that I rescued that needed to have a home of their own that
limited our availability to take on additional animals. My passion to continue helping
animals has not stopped but my ability to bring more animals in based on living space has
complicated things.

3) How does your BHAG align with your vision statement from Module 4?

My vision statement is: I will continuously seek new avenues and sources for learning
and development of myself in an attempt to create and maintain mutually beneficial
relationships with others.

I believe this aligns with my BHAG because I am always striving to challenge myself
and help others. When it comes to opening a shelter it would not only be a new
challenging adventure but also a way for me to help my community and animals in need.
Taking on the challenge of opening a new non-profit as well as leaving the aerospace
industry for a completely different type of business will be tough but I will spend years

1
prior to embarking on this adventure learning about non-profits and how shelters operate
and remain successful.

4) How does your BHAG align with your mission statement from Module 4?

My mission statement is: Whether by word or action, I will be a positive leader known
for inspiring and improving the lives of every individual I encounter.

I really focus on the “improving the lives of every individual I encounter” when thinking
about how my mission statement aligns with my BHAG. I realize it is more based off
helping animals and humans alike and my end goal is to improve the lives of everyone I
meet. While the mission statement seems more career oriented I believe in the end I truly
just want to help others in need whether it is animals or humans.

5) List your top five (5) obstacles in order from number 5 being least difficult and
number 1 being most difficult you need to overcome in order to obtain your BHAG
and explain the relevance of each one.

Obstacle 1 – Retirement. I think retiring will be the most complicated obstacle when
trying to achieve my BHAG because it requires me to limit my pleasures during my
younger years to ensure that I am financially secure in the future. I have to change my
way of thinking and living now to ensure that I can support a goal I have 20 years away.
It is hard for me to change my lifestyle especially when the goal is so far away but I
know in order to be able to afford the initial costs of starting the businesses as well as pay
my existing living expenses I need to double my savings and limit my expenses.

Obstacle 2 – Graduate ASU. While this obstacle is so close and may not seem like a
large Task to some it is been extremely rough for me to complete my course work as well
as working full time. Graduating will allow me to begin my other milestones identified
on my Gantt chart. If I don’t graduate I am unable to apply for the various leadership
programs I have planned for the next few years and I am unable to apply for promotions.
Currently I am at a standstill in my career until I get my degree. If I don’t get my degree
my BHAG of opening a non-profit shelter gets pushed further and further back.

Obstacle 3 – Becoming a Parent. While it isn’t listed in my Gantt becoming a mother is

in the plans for my husband and I within the next five years. The reason this is an
obstacle is because it will completely change my career and how I view it. Boeing
currently offers 3 months of paid maternity leave and at the moment I struggle to take a
single day off for my own mental health. This will be a challenging time for me as I shift
my focus from my career to my family. I know this will clash with me and my husband’s
career driven minds but we are both ready for this next adventure in our lives.

Obstacle 4 – Leave my current department. I love my coworkers and what we do in

our department but I know that I will need to eventually leave my position in order to
grow. When applying for programs and they question whether I will be able to dedicate
half of my day to the program and another role I get anxiety at the possibility that I will
lose the connection with my team members. I also fear that if I’m doing well in another
2
role and decide to transfer I leave my team with the burden of all my workload. I know
that at some point we will all have different roles and maintain our friendships but it is
hard to think about eventually not working with them daily. I need to spread my wings
and challenge myself, but if I remain in my current department I will never grow as an
individual.

Obstacle 5 – Stop spending money on unnecessary items. This is an easy obstacle for
me to tackle. When I stop spending money on items that just take up space in my home
versus necessary items I will be able to focus on what is truly important to me. This
obstacle will teach me self-control which in turn will help me easily achieve my goals in
the future. I find joy in retail therapy, but typically end up feeling overwhelmed and
cluttered every quarter. If I can limit my spending to only items necessary to live I will
not only support my mental health by feeling neat and tidy but also save hundreds of
dollars each month. All of the money saved by not purchasing unnecessary things will go
into savings in order to acquire more land and support retiring early. It is important to be
in a financially safe position when retiring in order to run a non-profit shelter. I will begin
this sacrifice by unconnecting my card from services like Amazon, Etsy and other retail
apps I have on my phone. This will eliminate the ease of purchasing things at the click of
a button without having to physically reach for my card to reconsider the purchase. The
next step will be to create a budget to really review my purchases and eliminate
misspending. Finally I need to increase the amount of money I am putting into my
savings accounts, ROTH, and 401k.

Section 2: Career Vision

Answer the following:

1) Analyze the type of career you want to have, in terms of an organizational career or
a protean career, make sure it is clear you understand the concepts as outlined in
the textbook. Why?

Initially, when I began working in the aerospace industry I strived to have an

organizational career. Having the structure and a clear path forward helped me focus on
what my leadership’s expectations of me were. Early on in any career I tend to put my
personal goals on the back burner and focus on building connections with not only my
immediate team but my senior leadership as well. I focus on following the processes and
directions of my leaders and building my network. As I get comfortable with my
organization and have a strong understanding of the requirements and tasks I then tend to
lean more to the protean side of a career. I currently am in a position within my
organization where the day to day tasks become repetitive and boring. When my daily
functions or projects become boring or repetitive, I begin losing motivation and passion.
When I get to this stage I start to lean towards a protean career where I crave a change or
challenge. I begin taking on projects that challenge me or support outside organizations. I
believe I need my career to remain protean now to continue to grow and develop. I fear I
will become lost in the daily tasks if I focus on an organizational career if I don’t
challenge myself by leaving my comfort zone. My Gantt chart shows that I plan to
always be multi-tasking in my career whether I am developing myself through leadership
programs or taking on new roles. Most of my personaility assessments also tie into the
3
fact that I am currently in an organizational career but strive to have a protean career
which can also be seen in my BHAG choice of operating my own non-profit shelter
which is not similar to my current career in any way.

2) Analyze your career with an explanation as one that moves you up the organization
or one you develop seeking alternative career paths. If you see yourself taking an
alternative career path, which one(s) sound the most likely? Why?

My career moves me up in the organization but also ends with me taking an alternative
career path in the second half of my life. I will be working my way up the corporate
ladder but when I retire I plan to then own and operate the animal shelter. My current
career plan reflects moving up the corporate ladder as I am employed with the Boeing
Company but as soon as I retire and leave the corporate world behind I switch my career
path completely and take on running a shelter. I believe if I had never gotten the job with
the Boeing Company and developing the passion for our product that I now have, I would
probably be a Vetrinarian or working with animals in some respect. When looking at my
entire career life I would say I am seeking alternative career path, but when I look at my
career life prior to retirement it is very much so based on moving up within a single
corporation.

3) Discuss and explain if you see yourself working an alternative or flexible work
schedule/arrangement? If so, which ones and why?

My absolute favorite part of my current position is I have the opportunity to have an

alternative work schedule. Boeing currently is on what we call a 9/80 schedule which
means you work 9 hour days except for Friday which you work an 8 hour day and then
have every other Friday off. I like this schedule because it allows me to schedule most of
my appointments on my off Friday without having to use my paid time off allowances
and I don’t come back to work with a plethora of unanswered emails. While that is the
standard work schedule I have also worked a 4/10 schedule which is working four 10
hour shifts and then having an additional day off. This was rough during school though
because I would spend 10 hours a day staring at a computer screen and then go home and
have to immediately do the same for my online courses. With the 9/80 of 5/8 schedules I
have a few hours between when I need to get online to do school work. I will continue
working a flexible schedule to ensure I can support my mental health as well as spend
quality time with my family. I will however probably end up going to the 4/10 schedule
once school is done in order to have a three day weekend every weekend versus every
other weekend on the 9/80 schedule.

4) Research and post current, or past, job postings from your local area, across the
country, or from around the world which illustrate how you might reach your
BHAG. Be sure to provide the Job Title, a small description and why it supports
your BHAG when you provide the URL. Websites such as CareerBuilder, Monster,
or Indeed might be a good place to begin. Also, career-specific websites such as
SHRM.org or AICPA.org often have job postings. Provide 2 listings for each of the
following time periods:

While I could not find job postings for running an operating a non-profit shelter these job
postings were from one of the shelters that inspired me to open my own shelter. I find that these
roles are aligned with my BHAG in the sense that I will be the one doing theses tasks at my own
non-profit. While I can not do most of the veterinary jobs they have posted I can facilitate and do

that these roles are aligned with my BHAG in the sense that I will be the one doing theses tasks
at my own non-profit. While I can not do most of the veterinary jobs they have posted I can
facilitate and do these jobs after some training. It will be extremely valuable for me to
understand how to train volunteers to properly handle the animals and ensure they get the correct
amount of human interaction. I would eventually give this role to someone we brought on the
team long term but it would be important for me to establish what this role entails by performing
it initially.

Section 3: Long-Term Strategy

Develop a strategy for moving toward your ideal future work/life situation and the realization of
your BHAG(s). Consider the timeframe for your BHAG(s). Provide a vivid description of life
“the way it will be” once your BHAG is realized.

9
1) Critically think about and then list out (not a narrative format) the interim steps or
milestones you have laid out for yourself that will aid you in reaching your BHAG
(you should have at least 10 to earn a rating of excellent and be referenced by time)

1. Mentorship with Apache International Program Managers (04/2021 – 02/2022)

2. ASU Graduation (04/2021 0 05/2021)
3. National Defense Industry Association (NDIA) Certification (04/2021 – 06/2021)
4. Mentor with USG Apache Program Manager (02/2022 – 04/2022)
5. Level 4 – Promotion (03/2022 – 04/2022)
6. Leadership NEXT Program (03/2022 – 04/2023)
7. Subject Matter Expert (SME) Certification (05/2023 – 12/2023)
8. Business Skills Rotation Program (BSRP) (04/2024 – 07/2026)
9. Technical Lead – Promotion (03/2027 – 04/2027)
10. Retirement by 50 (02/2041)
11. Travel the World (02/2041 – 01/2044)
12. Open Dog Shelter – BHAG (01/2044 - 01/2045)

2) In addition to career-related roles, consider your other life roles in relation to your
career goals. Revisit your responses to the Identities Exercise that you completed in
Module 1 of the course. Based on your long-term strategy what are the 3 most
precious things you are willing to sacrifice, besides time, to achieve your BHAG?
Why?

My first sacrifice is to give up shopping and buying unnecessary items in order to save
more money for retirement. I find joy in retail therapy, but typically end up feeling
overwhelmed and cluttered every quarter. If I can limit my spending to only items
necessary to live I will not only support my mental health by feeling neat and tidy but
also save hundreds of dollars each month. All of the money saved by not purchasing
unnecessary things will go into savings in order to acquire more land and support retiring
early. It is important to be in a financially safe position when retiring in order to run a
non-profit shelter. I will begin this sacrifice by unconnecting my card from services like
Amazon, Etsy and other retail apps I have on my phone. This will eliminate the ease of
purchasing things at the click of a button without having to physically reach for my card
to reconsider the purchase. The next step will be to create a budget to really review my
purchases and eliminate misspending. Finally I need to increase the amount of money I
am putting into my savings accounts, ROTH, and 401k.

My second sacrifice will be to give up my desire to stay local to my family. While I will
always be within a state away from family I will have to change my mindset in order to
serve as many animals as possible. I was born and raised in Mesa, Arizona and my
husband and I have no desire to live anywhere else, but when looking at my BHAG this
mindset isn’t logical. In order to support the maximum number of animals in need I need
to branch out of Mesa and locate my shelters where there are overflowing animal control
facilities and strays. It will take a few years of research to determine the best locations for
our non-profit shelters but I know that we will eventually have multiple locations and
Mesa has very little available land to purchase that would support our acreage goals. I

10
will need to get used to the idea of living further than 10 minutes from my family
members and how I can keep the connections as strong as they are.

The third and final sacrifice I will make is leaving my current team. I love my coworkers
and what we do in our department but I know that I will need to eventually leave my
position in order to grow. When applying for programs and they question whether I will
be able to dedicate half of my day to the program and another role I get anxiety at the
possibility that I will lose the connection with my team members. I also fear that if I’m
doing well in another role and decide to transfer I leave my team with the burden of all
my workload. I know that at some point we will all have different roles and maintain our
friendships but it is hard to think about eventually not working with them daily. I need to
spread my wings and challenge myself, but if I remain in my current department I will
never grow as an individual.

Section 4: The one to two year plan

Using a SMART goals-based approach, as well as project planning and management skill best
practices, create a detailed project plan for at least two specific goals. At least one must be
related to your long-term BHAG. The other may be related to some other aspect of your career
development or career-life integration. Both of these goals need to be things that you are
passionate about accomplishing.

Your selected goals and SMART plan (see SMART goal information provided in the module)
should be structured based on a one to two-year timeline. It should include specific milestones,
action items, sub-tasks as well as task-related interdependencies as applicable. With respect to
each goal, critically think about what specifically are the things you will do in the next one to
two years to achieve these goals.

Develop a clear and detailed SMART plan, with facilitating goals and steps/actions required
to accomplish your selected goals. It should be evident, by looking at the format and structure
of your plan, that you have developed some significant skills respect to project management.
Include Gantt charts (T) or other visual project representations as you see fit, and be sure to
address your approach to tracking/measuring your progress (M).

1) What is your #1 Goal? (at least one of the following must be related to your BHAG)

Goal #1: Start Networking in the animal shelter world.

Specific: Networking is important for personal and career development. My goal is to

attend three networking or volunteering events quarterly to connect with people in the
animal shelter industry to build my network and reources.
Measurable: I will revisit towards the end of the quarter and ensure I have attended at
least three events.
Attainable: Most social events are virtual and the shelters are always looking for
volunteers. This gives me an opportunity to network with a wider range of individuals
and various types of shelters.

11
Relevant: This will help me build my network or resources and knowledge for my
BHAG.
Time-Based: I will attend three events each quarter but will revisit or expand each year.
For example three events each quarter this year and then possibly four events each
quarter next year based on time availablility.

2) What is your #2 Goal? (at least one of these must be related to your BHAG)

Goal #2: Overcome Social Media Addiction.

Specific: I want to increase my productivity, but in order to do this I have to learn to

manage or beat my social media addiction. Doing this will also give my self-esteem a
boost by reducing social comparisons. I will spend the next month taking my social
media time down from 5+ hours a day to 1 hour a day.
Measurable: Track the amount of time I am online and lower it to a maximum of 1 hour a
day.
Attainable: I spend hours revisiting the same images or posts I saw in the morning and it
leads to just procrastinating and time wasted.
Relevant: This will help me focus my time in a more productive way. This will help me
refine my time management skills and allow me to build better connections with my
friends in person.
Time-Based: Within the next month.
