Book 4 Units 4-5

(听力材料)
(Text 1)
M: I’d like to make an appointment with the doctor for tomorrow.
W: Unfortunately he is completely booked.
(Text 2)
W: Let me see if the game has started yet.
M: Started? It must be nearly over.
(Text 3)
M: Mary, I’d like the letter typed immediately. It is urgent.
W: No problem, sir. It will be ready in thirty minutes.
(Text 4)
M: Did you mind coming back by bus instead of by train?
W: No, I didn’t mind at all. It took a lot longer, but it was very comfortable and it was much
cheaper.
M: That’s good. Next time you can drive your car to the branch.
W: Really? Thank you.
(Text 5)
M: I’ll have the beef, the sausage, the French Fries and some ice cream.
W: Oh, these things will ruin your health, too much fat and sugar. How about ordering some
vegetables and fruit instead?
M: All right. I’ll have beans, carrots and tomatoes.
W: OK. I’ll be back soon.
(Text 6)

(Text 8)
W: We’ve got a new manager in our department.
M: Oh? You hoped to get that job, didn’t you?
W: Yes, I did.
M: I’m sorry. That’s too bad. Who is it? Who got the job, I mean?
W: Someone called Drexler. Carl Drexler. He’s been with the company only two years. I’ve been
here 3 years longer than him. And I know more about the job, too.
M: Why do you think they gave it to him and not to you?
W: Because I’m the wrong gender, of course.
M: You mean you didn’t get the job because you’re a woman?
W: Yes, that was probably it. It isn’t fair.
M: What sort of clothes does he wear?
W: A dark suit, white shirt, a tie. Why?
M: Perhaps that had something to do with it.
W: You mean you think I didn’t get the job because I come to work in jeans and a sweater?
M: It’s possible, isn’t it?
W: Mmm, perhaps.
(Text 9)
W: Hi! Tony, do you have any plans for the summer vacation?
M: Yeah, I will take a part-time job. What about you?
W: Same here. I will also work but then I’m going to India with some friends.
M: Wow, that’s a mysterious place! But it costs a lot. I don’t think I can afford a trip abroad.
W: So I’ll try to earn and save some money for my plan. Travelling will benefit me a lot. I can do
body exercise at the same time. Do you think so?
M: Yes, I think travelling is great. But I can still exercise myself while working.
W: Of course. I can make more friends during my travels as well.
M: Don’t you think I can make friends without travelling?
W: No, I don’t mean that. Anyway, I can enjoy the great scenery and different culture.
M: I can learn those things through the television.
W: I can’t imagine that you could take a photo on TV.
M: I can expand my knowledge of history and geography more widely with less money.
W: Yes, that’s true. I do believe much can be learned from books. You don’t have to say students
should always focus on their studies, right? We’ve already bought the flight tickets of June
30th.
M: Have a nice trip!

(Text 10)
I’ve decided to take up golf after playing with a friend recently. However, the sport isn’t as easy
as it appears. To improve my game, I’ve been spending a lot of time at the driving range hitting
balls with my clubs. I’m able to drive the ball about 275 yards. About twice a week, I reserve a time
at 6:00 pm, and I usually play with a colleague from work. I enjoy carrying my own clubs around
the golf course. It just gives me more exercise. I can usually get the ball to the green on my third or
fourth shot, but the ball sometimes lands in a sand trap. That’s when I have a problem because I
have a difficult time getting the ball out of the sand trap and on to the green. If all goes well, I can
put the ball into the hole on the fifth or sixth shot. As you can see, my game is getting better.
