Gran: I’m trying to operate this new machine I bought. I have to send
one of those email things to a friend in Australia.
Gran: That would be fantastic dear. So, the first issue is that I have been typing the letters but nothing
has come up on the screen.
Steve: Eh, I think the trouble there is you haven’t actually turned the computer on yet. You need to
switch on this button, here. Okay, perfect. Now, you need to launch the browser. Use the mouse
to click on the icon which says Internet Explorer.
Steve: It’s the internet Gran. The world wide web?! Oh never mind, you’ll get the hang of it soon. Now
you need to access your email account. You have an email address, don’t you?!
Gran: Yes, your father set one up for me on Yazoo last year.
Steve: Ah, I think you mean Yahoo… So, here’s the sign in page. You sign in with your address and
password.
Gran: Here it is, in my address book. It’s supergran47@yahoo.com and the password is ‘slippers’.
Oh look there’s an email from your cousin in Italy and she sent a photo of the new baby. Isn’t she
adorable.
Steve: We should print it out. When you go inside, connect the laptop to the printer, scroll down the
page until you see the printer icon and click on it.
Gran: Wonderful! This laptop thing is great. I think I’ll be okay on my own now dear.
Steve: Well don’t forget to sign out of your email when you’ve finished and shut the computer down.
2 weeks later…
Gran: Oh, it’s just marvellous. I’ve learnt how to create and back up files, I’ve been bidding on e-bay for a
jacket I like and I even signed up to Facebook and Twitter.
Steve: Good for you Gran. You should give mum a few tips. She doesn’t have a clue.
