Name: Ethan Dexter

Central Concept:
Pitch

Learning Goals (include 2 or 3, these must relate to concept):

Student will be able to play the G Major Tetrachord
Student will understand bow distribution in relation to long and short notes
Student will understand and be able to perform quarter and eighth note rhythms

Procedure (Step by step plan)

Slowly introduce the G major tetrachord, note by note.

~Students know other tetrachords, so allow them to make connections and do not tell them
where to place their fingers.
~4 quarter notes on each pitch, “repeat after me.”

Play “Baa Baa Black Sheep” pizzicato

~Slow enough tempo to where students can be successful
~Make connections to G major tetrachord
~Make connections to Twinkle Twinkle Little Star

Play the rhythm of the piece on open strings (play the piece with only right hand)
~Get students to utilize a great bow hold first
~Do the “Down-wiggle Up-wiggle” exercise with a vertical bow
~Mention bow distribution: more bow on long notes and less on short bows
~Slow enough tempo to where students can be successful

Play the piece! Bowing with right hand, pitch with left hand
~Will need to be a bit slower for students to be successful
Assessment (these must relate directly to your learning goals).

*Didn’t teach any real students, so these are imagined assessments based on my own playing*

~Some students have trouble with the 2nd and 3rd finger spacing. Tetrachord is otherwise good
~Students need to use more bow in general
~Students show understanding of quarter and eighth notes
