Preparing the Aircraft

To prepare the aircraft for the Pre-Flight Checklist, you must do a few
things.
 Set Fuel and Payload in the FSX/P3D “Alt” Menu
o You can find Fuel and Payload under Vehicle
 You have two options when powering the aircraft up from Cold and
Dark:
o Connect the GPU:
 To connect the GPU you must:
 The parking brake can be found on the left side of
the captain’s seat atop the tiller.
 Set/Verify PARK BRAKE is ENGAGED (Pulled out)
 Set BATTERY to ON
 Retrieve your tablet
o The tablet can be retrieved by clicking on the
sleeve left of the Captain’s yoke and right of
the First Officer’s yoke.
 Click on the tablet screen
Note: You should see 3 apps to choose from, if you do
not, click the X in the top right corner of the tablet.
 Select the On-Demand app
 Check the box next to the Ground Power Unit
 The annunciator above EXT PWR should illuminate
with AVAIL
 Set EXT PWR to ON
 Set GALLEY PWR to ON
o Start the APU:
 To start the APU you must set:
 The parking brake can be found on the left side of
the captain’s seat atop the tiller.
 Set/Verify PARK BRAKE is ENGAGED (Pulled out)
 BATTERY to ON
 START PUMP to ON
 APU MASTER to START then to ON
 Wait until the annunciator above APU GEN illuminates to
ON and set:
 APU GEN to ON

Note: APU AIR available two minutes after start.
 Set GALLEY PWR to ON
 Displays will take roughly 2 minutes to power on
 During this period the stick pusher and stick shaker will run a self test.
 The Integrated Standby Instrument System (ISIS) will also conduct a
self test during this period.

System Tests

 Hydraulic System Test


o Set AUX HYD PUMP to ON
o Set HYD TRANS to ON
o Verify you have 2800 psi or more on the HYD SD DISPLAY
o Set AUX HYD PUMP to OFF
o Set HYD TRANS to OFF
 EGPWS Test
o Push the EGPWS MODE to TEST and hold until test begins
 Emergency Power Test
o Verify L & R ENG FUEL VALVE set to OFF
o Set EMERGENCY PWR to ARM
o Verify on the EAD that EMERGENCY POWER TEST FAIL is
not indicated
o Leave in ARM position
 Wing Ice Detection Test
o Push WING ICE DETECTION to TEST and release
o Verify WING ICE DET PASS on EAD
 Fuel System Test
o Press and hold FUEL QTY TEST for 5 seconds
o Verify on FUEL SD DISPLAY:
 9000 Pounds Displayed in total
 Gear Warning Test
o Unlock Gear Handle
o Verify gear annunciators now display red
o Lock Gear Handle Down
 Stabilizer Trim Test
o Open the CONFIG SD DISPLAY
o Verify YOKE TRIM moves stabilizer trim
o Enable the STAB TRIM INHIBIT
o Verify YOKE TRIM does not move stabilizer trim
o Verify ALT LONG TRIM can still move stabilizer trim
o Disable STAB TRIM INHIBIT
 Transponder/TCAS Test
o Push TCAS MODE to TEST
o Verify TCAS elements on PFD and ND
o Listen for an audible TCAS TEST OK

 Observer Oxygen Mask


o Behind the First Officer’s seat (Right of the cup holder)
o Test the mask by pressing the tab left of the “Tab/Reset” and
listen for a blast of air.
o Twist the black oxygen mode knob to emergency mode.
o Test the mask by pressing and holding the tab left of the
“Tab/Reset” and listen for a flow of air.
o Twist the black oxygen mode knob back to standard mode.

Pre-Flight Overview

 Interior and exterior inspection


o Normally this is when the walk around of the aircraft takes
place, this part can be completed just by verifying the state of
the aircraft.
o Set EMERGENCY LIGHTS to ON
o Verify emergency lights illuminate the cockpit
o SET EMERGENCY LIGHTS to ARM
 Oxygen mask
o Oxygen masks can be found in three locations around the
cockpit:
 Left of the Captain’s seat (Behind the cup holders)
 Right of the First Officer's seat (Behind the cup holders)
 Behind the First Officer’s seat (Right of the cup holder)
o Test each of the masks by pressing the tab left of the
“Tab/Reset” and listen for a blast of air.
o Twist each of the black oxygen mode knobs to emergency
mode.
o Test each of the masks by pressing and holding the tab left of
the “Tab/Reset” and listen for a flow of air.
o Twist each of the black oxygen mode knobs back to standard
mode.
 Voice Recorder
o The cockpit voice recorder is located at the top-center section
of the overhead panel just below the circuit breakers.
o You must test the CVR by pressing and holding the black CVR
TEST switch until the annunciator above STATUS illuminates
green. Once green, let go of the switch and verify that the light
is no longer illuminated after 5 seconds.
 Cargo Smoke
o The cargo smoke panel is located on the left-mid section of the
overhead panel. It can be found just below the IRS panel and
above the APU Panel.
o Press and hold down CARGO SMOKE TEST and:
 Verify that all “PUSH” annunciators on the cargo smoke
panel are illuminated with an amber color
 Listen for an audible “Cargo Smoke”

 On the AIR SD DISPLAY: Verify 12 Red Delta’s are


displayed
 Note: Clicking AIR SD DISPLAY will acknowledge the
alert, which silences the “Cargo Smoke” aural alert.
o Once all of these are completed, release CARGO SMOKE
TEST
 Air Conditioning Panel
o The air panel can be found in the middle section of the
overhead panel, just below the electrical panel and above the
fuel panel.
o If you are using an air source (e.g. APU or External Air):
 Set the ISOL Valve to OPEN
 Set L PACK and R PACK to ON
o If you are not using an air source:
 Set the ISOL Valve to OPEN
 Set L PACK and R PACK to OFF
Note: You must have an air source for engine start.
 Ice Protection Panel
o The ice protection panel can be found on the right-mid section
of the overhead panel.
o If OAT is less than 6℃ with visible moisture or the difference
between OAT and dew point is less than 3℃:
 NOTE FOR AFTERSTART
 Set WINDSHIELD ANTI-ICE to ON
o If there is an indication of structural icing (e.g. ice on windshield
bolts, wipers, etc):
 WING ICE PROTECTION set to ON
 TAIL ICE PROTECTION set to ON
 Set WINDSHIELD ANTI-ICE to ON
Note: Visible icing not simulated.
o If OAT is above 6℃ and the difference between OAT and dew
point is higher than 3℃ and NO structural icing is present:
 ALL Switches set to OFF excluding:
 Set WINDSHIELD ANTI-ICE to ON

 Annunciator Lights
o The annunciator light test button can be found on the right-
lower section of the overhead panel, above the right windshield
wiper.
o Hold down ANNUNCIATOR LIGHT TEST and verify lights are
visible on these panels:
 Overhead (Above Circuit Breakers):
 Ground Service Elec Pwr
 Overhead (Below Circuit Breakers):
 Flight Deck Door Panel
 IRS Panel
 ANTISKID Switch
 VHF Overhead Panel
 Cargo Smoke Panel
 HYD CONT RUDDER Switch
 EGPWS TERRAIN OVRD Switch
 Electrical Panel

 Passenger Signs
o The passenger signs control switches can be found on the
bottom-center of the overhead panel. The switch is located on
the Lights Panel.
 Verify NO SMOKING SIGN is ON
 Set SEAT BELT SIGN to ON
 Flight Control Panel (FCP)
o The flight control panel controls the plane’s auto flight systems.
This can be found in the center of the glareshield panels.
o Verify values set for flight match restrictions for planned
departure.
 Altimeters
o The altimeter control can be found on the EIS Control Panel on
the left and right side of the glareshield panels.
o The current setting can be found on the Captain and First
Officer’s PFDs, as well as the ISIS between the MCDUs .
o Set altimeters to current barometric pressure
o The altimeters are independent of each other, verify and
crosscheck.
 Flight and Navigation Instruments
o Align the IRS
 The IRS panel can be found on the left-top of the
overhead panel below the circuit breakers.
 Verify you have stable power and set IRS switches to
NAV
Note: Your aircraft must not be moving during alignment.
 On either MCDU (Read our MCDU Documentation Here):
 Enter the FMC and F-PLN INIT Page and enter the
airports in the scratch pad and click the right level
select 1 (R LSK 1) key
o Airports should be formatted:
 DepICAO/ArrICAO
 Click the R LSK 6 key for Return to F-PLN INIT
 Click the R LSK 4 key to INITIALIZE IRS
 Verify IRS IN ALIGN is displayed on the EAD
o Verify the MCDU
 Enter and Verify Flight Plan on the F-PLN Page
 Enter and Verify all 3 INIT Pages
 Enter and Verify Takeoff Data on TO / APPR Page

 Enter PLAN Mode on ND and Verify Flight Plan


Note: PLAN Mode can be entered from the EIS Control Panel
by selecting PLAN once IRS has been aligned.
 Once PLAN Mode verified, return to MAP Mode
 Fire Warning
o The Fire Warning/Extinguisher Panel can be found below the
FCP. The FIRE TEST switch can be located between the two
red handles on the left side.
o Hold down the FIRE TEST and verify that:
 Audible “FIRE RIGHT ENGINE”
 Audible “FIRE LEFT ENGINE”
 Audible “APU FIRE”
 Both handles illuminate
o Once verified, release FIRE TEST and verify handles are no
longer illuminated.
o Note: A Tri-tone aural alert may be heard as well under certain
circumstances.
 Parking Brake
o Verify this is in the Pulled Out (ENGAGED) position.
 Takeoff Warning
o The takeoff warning can be heard when advancing the throttles
while not in the proper takeoff configuration.
o Advance the throttles forward until you hear:
 Two Beeps followed with:
 Stabilizer
 Slats
 Flaps
 Brakes
o Once verified, return the throttles to the idle position.
Note: Stabilizer warning may not occur if you have set your trim.
 Fuel Pump Switches
o The fuel pump switches can be location on the fuel panel on the
central-lower overhead panel.
o If not using APU, verify pumps are off.
o If using APU, verify R AFT PUMP is set to ON.

 Radios and Transponder


o The VHF Radios and Transponders can be found on the center
pedestal.
o Verify Radios are set to the proper frequencies and your
transponder is set to designated code from ATC.
 Weather Radar
o Your weather radar (WX Radar) can be found on the center
pedestal.
o Set WX MODE to TEST
o Verify 4 Colors are displayed on the ND
o Set WX MODE to OFF
o Verify your ND is not displaying WXR ON
 Aileron and Rudder Trim
o Your aileron and rudder trims can be found on the center
pedestal.
o Select the CONFIG SD DISPLAY
o Verify the RUD Delta is within the green band on the indicator.
o Verify the AIL Delta is centered on the indicator.
 Flight Attendant Briefing
o This would be the time to brief the flight attendants on the flight.
o This would also be a good time to verify you have any crew/pax
addons running and configured.
 Departure Briefing
o Conduct the departure briefing with all crew members aboard.
 Logbook and QRHs
o Verify you have all ACARS programs running and you have
proper documents in your tablet for the flight.
 Fuel Required
o Cross-verify that fuel you have planned for flight is at minimum
on board.

Preparing for Pushback

 Electrical
o If you are using external power, you must start the APU for
pushback.
 To start the APU:
o R AFT PUMP to ON
o APU MASTER to START then to ON
 Wait until the annunciator above APU GEN
illuminates to ON and set:
o APU GEN to ON
o APU AIR to ON
o Retrieve your tablet
o Click on the tablet
o Select the On-Demand App
o Disconnect the GPU by clicking the box left of
Ground Power Unit and verify it is a hollow
box.
o Disconnect External Air by clicking the box left
of External Air Unit
o Remove Wheel Chocks/Cones by clicking the
box left Wheel Chocks/Cones
Note: APU AIR available two minutes after start.
 Hydraulic Panel
o Set LEFT HYD PUMP and RIGHT HYD PUMP to ON
o Set AUX HYD PUMP to HYD TRANS to ON
 Fuel Panel
o Set ALL FUEL PUMPS with fuel in respective tanks to ON
 Transponder
o Set TCAS MODE to ALT ON
 Ice Protection
o Verify your anti-ice is still set for the conditions
o Verify WINDSHIELD ANTI-ICE is ON
 Lights
o Set BEACON to ON
 Parking Brake
o Set PARKING BRAKE to RELEASED (PUSHED IN)

 Begin pushback at this point


 Air
o Set L PACK and R PACK to OFF
 Note: Once pushback ends, set PARKING BRAKE to ENGAGED, do
not wait for pushback to end to start engines.
 Engine Start
o Display ENG SD DISPLAY
o Left Engine Start:
 Pull L ENG START
 Set L ENG FUEL VALVE to ON
 WAIT
 Continue after L ENG START recesses
o Right Engine Start
 Pull R ENG START
 Set R ENG FUEL VALVE to ON
 WAIT
 Continue after R ENG START recesses

 Ice Protection
o If If OAT is less than 6℃ with visible moisture or the difference

Taxi

 Airfoil
o Set FLAPS to setting set in the MCDU TO / APPR page.
o Note: If flap setting is not a predetermined position, you must
set it to the dial a flap
o Put SPOILERS into ARM position
 Note: A red band and ARM will be visible on the spoiler
handle when in the armed position
o Verify/set stabilizer trim to setting displayed in the TO / APPR
page under STAB
 Note: You can see current STAB position in the CONFIG
SD Display and ENG SD DISPLAY
 The STAB trim should be within green band

Before Takeoff

 Departure Runway
o Verify the runway you are preparing to takeoff from is the
runway assigned to you by ATC and the runway set up in the
MCDU for departure
 Flaps
o Verify FLAPS are set to the correct setting on the CONFIG SD
DISPLAY
 Takeoff Briefing
o This is when you should go over the takeoff procedure, who is
in charge during departure, and V-Speeds
 Brake Temperature
o Verify your brake temperature is within safe limits on the
CONFIG SD DISPLAY
 Flight Controls
o View the CONFIG SD DISPLAY
o Verify that following flight controls display a green box on
CONFIG SD DISPLAY:
 Yoke Full Left
 Yoke Full Right
 Yoke Full Forward
 Rudder Full Left
 Rudder Full Right
 Note: Yoke Full Back will not display green box as the
elevator control only becomes alive with sufficient
airspeed
 EAD
o Verify no abnormal alerts displayed on EAD
o A green box will be displayed in the center annunciator on the
EAD if your takeoff configuration is proper
 Transponder
o Set TCAS MODE to TA/RA
o Verify transponder is set to ATC assigned number
 Lights
o Set ON:
 LANDING LIGHTS
 HIGH INTENSITY LIGHT
o Set:

o Set OFF:
 LEFT GROUND FLOOD LIGHT
 RIGHT GROUND FLOOD LIGHT
 Flight Attendants
o Once takeoff clearance given:
 Click FLIGHT ATTENDANT CALL
o This informs the cabin that takeoff clearance has been given
 Conduct Takeoff
o Your aircraft is ready for takeoff, call for after takeoff checklist
once flaps are up and aircraft is in climb phase.

Takeoff

 Takeoff
o Use takeoff EPR, verify takeoff config warning is not heard
o Once positive rate is established, GEAR set to UP

Initial Climb

 Follow the Flight Director bars on the PFD and Thrust Limits on the
EAD
 At any time at pilot flying’s discretion, given speed is above FR:
o FLAPS set to UP
 At any time at pilot flying’s discretion, given speed is above SR:
o SLATS set to UP
 At any time at pilot flying’s discretion:
o To enable the autopilot, select AUTOFLIGHT ENGAGE

After Takeoff

 Verify the landing gear handle is in the up and locked position.


o Verify no gear annunciators are displayed on the annunciator
panel left of the gear handle above the SD Display.
 Set HYD TRANS and AUX HYD PUMP to OFF
 Set APU MASTER and APU AIR to OFF
 Flaps and Slats
o Verify Flaps handle is in the UP position
o Note: This can be verified by viewing the PFD and ensuring that
FLAPS and SLATS are not displayed underneath the Speed
Tape.
 Disarm the spoiler and verify that a red band is not visible
 Ensure no abnormal conditions are displayed on the EAD

Climb

 Lights
o NOSE, LANDING LIGHTS, and LOGO off above 10,000 feet
AGL
o GROUND FLOOD and WING/NACELLE lights off above
18,000 feet MSL
 Altimeters set to standard above transition altitude (29.92 Hg or 1013
hPa)
o Cross-check altimeters (Captain, First Officer, and ISIS)
 Auto-Flight must be enabled during RVSM
o RVSM begins at FL290 and ends at FL410
o Note: Flight mode's FMS SPD and NAV use CDU input data for
automatic flight.
o To enable the autopilot, select AUTOFLIGHT ENGAGE

Auto Flight

 To fly the route entered in your CDU:


o Enable these autoflight modes:
 FMS SPEED (Speed Control)
 NAV MODE (Lateral Navigation Control)
 PROF MODE (Vertical Navigation Control)
 Verify you have your cruising altitude set in your
FCP Altitude Box.
 Once you are ready to descend, set the lowest
restriction found on the F-PLN page.
 Other Autoflight Modes
o Speed Hold Mode:
 You can set the speed by twisting the AFS SPEED KNOB
 You can quickly set your current speed by left clicking to
push the AFS SPEED KNOB
 To set the new speed in the FCP Speed Box, Right click
to pull the AFS SPEED KNOB
 You can switch between mach and indicated airspeed by
selecting AFS AIRSPEED MODE
o Heading Hold Mode:
 You can set the heading by twisting the AFS HEADING
KNOB
 You can quickly set your current heading by left clicking to
push the AFS HEADING KNOB
 To set the new speed in the FCP Heading Box, Right click
to pull the AFS HEADING KNOB
 You can switch between heading and track mode by
selecting AFS HEADING MODE

 To set the new speed in the FCP altitude Box, Right click
to pull the AFS ALTITUDE KNOB
 You can switch between feet and meters by selecting
ALTITUDE MODE
o Vertical Speed Mode:
 Vertical speed mode climbs or descends to an altitude at
a given rate of feet per minute.
 Set the altitude by twisting the AFS ALTITUDE KNOB and
pulling the knob (right clicking) to enable altitude hold
mode.
 To set V/S Mode, twist the AFS VS KNOB to the desired
climb or descent rate.
o Flight Path Angle Mode (FPA):
 Flight path angle mode climbs or descends to an altitude
at a given flight angle.
 To enter this mode, click AFS VS MODE.
 Set the altitude by twisting the AFS ALTITUDE KNOB and
pulling the knob (right clicking) to enable altitude hold
mode.
 To set FPA Mode, twist the AFS VS KNOB to the desired
climb or descent angle.

 Altimeters set below transition altitude


o Cross-check altimeters (Captain, First Officer, and ISIS)
 Set minimums by twisting the MINIMUMS KNOB on the EIS Control
Panel and cross-check on the
 Landing Data
o Verify you have entered landing data into the TO/APPR page
and verified runway length matches landing length.
 This would be the time to conduct the approach briefing, discuss
weather, radios, instruments, minimums, time, missed approach
procedures, pilot in command and any other concerns you may have
with the approach/landing.
 Lights
o GROUND FLOOD and WING/NACELLE lights on below 18,000
feet MSL
o NOSE (LDG), LANDING LIGHTS, and LOGO on below 10,000
feet AGL
 Set HYD TRANS and AUX HYD PUMP to ON below 10,000 feet AGL
 Set Ice Protection based on current weather conditions and
destination conditions:
o If OAT is less than 6℃ with visible moisture or the difference
between OAT and dew point is less than 3℃:
 L ENG ICE PROTECTION set to ON
 R ENG ICE PROTECTION set to ON
 Set WINDSHIELD ANTI-ICE to ON
o If there is an indication of structural icing (e.g. ice on windshield
bolts, wipers, etc):
 WING ICE PROTECTION set to ON
 TAIL ICE PROTECTION set to ON
 Set WINDSHIELD ANTI-ICE to ON
Note: Visible icing not simulated.
o If OAT is above 6℃ and the difference between OAT and dew
point is higher than 3℃ and NO structural icing is present:
 ALL Switches set to OFF excluding:
 Verify WINDSHIELD ANTI-ICE is ON
 Signs
o Seat Belt signs should be on by 10,000 feet AGL

 Verify your navigation and flight instruments are ready

 Arm the autoland system by clicking AFS

o Monitor airspeed and altitude till you have touched down.

o FLAPS SET to POSITION 0 (SLATS EXTEND)
o Note: This can be verified by a visual
 At any time on the approach, given speed is below FR:
o FLAPS incrementally extended to selected setting in the APPR
page.
 Verify barometers match the field’s current barometric pressure and
cross check all three barometers (Captain, First Officer, and ISIS).
 To disengage autoflight (autopilot):
o Click the yellow button on the yoke twice.

Landing

 Once speed it below GE:


o SET the LANDING GEAR HANDLE into the DOWN position
o Verify three green annunciators left of LANDING GEAR
HANDLE, above SD Display
 Verify FLAPS are set to setting set in the MCDU APPR page.
o Note: If flap setting is not a predetermined position, you must
set it to the dial a flap
 Put SPOILERS into ARM position
o Note: A red band and ARM will be visible on the spoiler handle
when in the armed position
 If you are using ILS/AUTOLAND:
o Verify that the glideslope and localizer has been captured on
the ND.
o This can be verified if there is a magenta diamond with white
circles below and right of the artificial horizon.
o Verify AUTOLAND is annunciated in green on the top right of
the PFD
 HOW TO ENGAGE REVERSERS
o Once you have touched down
o Hit F1 Once to enter idle thrust
o Hit F2 Once to enter idle reverse
o Hit F2 Again to enter max reverse
o Hitting F2 a third time will enter emergency reverse
o Hit F1 until you are in idle thrust again
 Note: If you see an amber REV on the EAD after returning to idle
thrust, you entered emergency reverse during rollout. In order to
clear this alert click ENG EXCEEDANCE RESET
