The Happy Prince By Oscar Wilde

The thing that I liked about this story is that even though the statue is made of gold
and does not live it is more human than everyone else. I think the main theme of
the story is sacrifice. Because it shows the Happy Prince giving his own parts of
his body to the poor. He is literally sacrificing his own body so that the poor people
can be happy and not starve. You can see this theme at the beginning of the story
when the Happy Prince first meets the swallow, at first the swallow wants to go
Egypt but the Happy Prince wants it to be his messenger. The Swallow agrees to
be his messenger and delivers his first item, a ruby from the Happy Prince. The
swallow is at first saddened by this because the Happy prince is giving away parts
of his own body but the Swallow agrees to deliver the ruby. After seeing what the
ruby can do to poor people the swallow now wants to deliver more. During this the
Happy Prince recalls his memory when he was human and says that he never
experience sadness in his life because it was not allowed in his home but after
being a statue which was located on a hill he could see all the sad people. This is
the inspiration for him to give charity to the less unfortunate. But after awhile the
Happy Prince is almost naked after stripping most of his jewels but he continues to
give his body for the good of the people. At last swallow is tired and dying of cold
from winter from delivering the Happy Prince’s gold to the poor people, the
Swallow quietly sits on the Happy Prince’s feet and says goodbye. The story ends
with both of them dying and an angel goes to retrieve them. The Happy Prince’s
story is that of a generous statue who only wants to give back to the poor because
he does not want them to feel sadness and misery. He is a true person at heart and
should be looked upon by everybody
