Congratulations with your brand-new VDL Jonckheere Coach, we wish you


many successful kilometers with it.

This handbook contains general information concerning instruments and


controls as well as driving instructions. Please ensure that you are familiar
with the contents before commencing driving.

Our company has used all its technical ability to create the ideal travel coach.

However we are fully aware, that it is you who can make a real success of
our Coach.

In this book you will find everything you need to know about the Jonckheere
body. We advise you to consult the VDL documentation for information about
the chassis.

Should there still be some things needing further explanation, or things you
want to discuss with us, it goes without saying that our company is always at
your disposal.

We wish you many successful and prosperous kilometers.

1.3 Safety requirements

Strict adherence to the following safety requirements is necessary to prevent risk to your
own or others health and safety.

Warnings and safety instructions.


Always read the instructions and warnings on labels and stickers. Don't ignore them,
they are there to ensure your safety and health!

Engine
Do not allow the engine to run in a closed or unventilated space.

Engine compartment
Keep away from moving parts.

Cooling system filling cap


Do not remove the cooling system's filler cap whilst the engine is at the operating
temperature. Relieve pressure first whilst slowly removing filler cap.

Warning triangle
Always have a warning triangle available (it is a legal requirement in some countries).

Safety vest
When doing emergency repairs always wear a safety vest (it is a legal requirement in
some countries).

Fire extinguisher
Ensure that you are always in possession of a fire extinguisher (it is a legal requirement in
some countries).
In the event of fire: Certain plastic seals can, in the event of a fire, form gases which
together with water form a corrosive acid. Therefore do not touch any fire extinguisher fluid
on the vehicle without protective gloves.

First aid kit


Ensure that you are always in possession of a first aid kit (it is a legal requirement in some
countries).

Luggage
All luggages must be stowed so that it cannot shift or fly loose, even in an emergency
stop. Bear in mind that the ride characteristics of a fully loaded vehicle differ from those
of an empty vehicle.

Welding
When welding on the vehicle first the negative and then the positive cable should be
disconnected from the batteries. Disconnect the alternators.
Place the earth damp of the welding apparatus as close as possible to the welding
location and ensure a good contact with the item being welded. . Do not connect the
earth clamp to the axles. Take care that welding spatter does not land on plastic fuel
pipes or on air lines or similar.

System voltage
The vehicle is provided with a 24 volt electrical system.
When replacing or upgrading electrical or electronic components, ensure that these are
suitable for this voltage.

Mobile telephones and Transmitters


The following precautions relate to the use of mobile phones and transmitters.

• Mobile phones and transmitters must not be used in the vehicle except via a separate
external aerial.

The use of mobile phones or transmitters without a separate external aerial


may cause excessive electromagnetic fields (the resonance effect) within
the vehicle. It is possible that this may lead to disturbances to the vehicle
electronics.

• In addition, the optimum range of this equipment can only be achieved with the use of
an external aerial.

Always follow the operating instructions for mobile telephones and


transmitters.

Original VDL Jonckheere parts.


Do not modify your vehicle with non original VDL Jonckheere parts.
Bear in mind that any modification to your Jonckheere vehicle with non-original parts
may adversely affect its performance, safety, durability and the warranty.
Modifications may also conflict with legal requirements.

1.4. Warranty conditions


The VDL Jonckheere warranty covers faults in materials, construction and fitting, for new
coaches, with normal use and maintenance.
For further details see VDL Jonckheere's general delivery conditions.

1.5. Environment
To prevent unnecessary damage to the environment, you should observe the following
guidelines:

• Waste fluids should be carefully collected and segregated, and should then be
delivered to an authorized site for recycling or disposal.
• Improper disposal of fluids may be a criminal offence.
• Ensure that the vehicle is regularly maintained. A properly maintained vehicle uses
fuel more efficiently and emits less harmful exhaust gases.
• Don't allow the engine to run unnecessarily when stationary, and always drive using
the appropriate engine speed.

2.2 Switches
Driver’s lighting. Guide’s lighting.

Interior lighting : Night lighting.


1st pos. : complete interior lighting.
2nd pos. : partial interior lighting.

Main switch
When the main switch is operated, the electrical system is tested. After 3
seconds, temporarily all warning lights will be lit and the buzzer will sound.
When the main switch is turned off, the electrical system is disconnected
from the power supply, with the exception of the hazard lights and the
tachograph/TSU.

The main switch can only be turned off if the ignition switch is
off

Front fog lights switch


This switch can be used to turn on the front fog lights when the main light
switch is in position I or II. There is no warning indication on the instrument
panel.

The legal requirements for the use of fog lights vary in each
country.

Rear fog lights switch


This spring-loaded switch is used to turn on the rear fog lights when the
dipped beam or main beam is already turned on or when the front fog lights
are already turned on.
The switch must be used again to turn the lights back on.
The inspection light in the switch and the inspection light on the instrument
panel are lit when the fog lights are turned on.

The legal requirements for the use of fog lights vary in each
country.

Light switch
The light switch has three positions:

0 Pressed at the bottom: lights are turned off.

I Width indicator lights and side-marker lights are turned on.

I Pressed at the top: Dipped beam/ main beam, width indicator lights and
side-marker lights are turned on.
If the lights are turned on, the warning light in the switch will be
lit.

Menu switch
The three screens on the main display can be selected by using the menu
switch on the instrument panel. The main switch and the contact switch must
be activated first.

Retarder on/off switch


The foot control of the retarder can be turned on and off using this switch.
The indication light in the switch is lit when the foot control of the retarder is
turned off.
This information symbol on the main display appears when the
retarder is turned off.

Only re-engage the retarder foot control function at very low


speed otherwise this can result in very violent reactions in the
drive line.

Hazard warning lights


Operation of this switch makes the vehicle’s indicators flash simulta- neously.
The hazard warning system can be used even if the master switch and
ignition switch are off. The lamp in the switch is red and flashes. If the main
switch is on, then the green direction indicator warning lamp on the
instrument panel also flashes.

The hazard warning lights flash quickly if a direction indication


light is broken.

Light dimmer switch


If the light switch is in position I or II, the instrument lights, as well as the
inspection lights in the various switches, will be lit.
The intensity of the instrument panel lights can be adjusted in six stages
using the dimmer switch. After the lowest intensity is reached the light
intensity is reselected. The intensity last selected is memorised when the
ignition is switched off.

Air suspension height adjustment
This switch can be used under special circumstances to adjust the driving
height of the vehicle (ground clearance). The switch activates the pneumatic
suspension system. Since the height settings and the conditions under which
they can be used are configured in the software and the parameters, they
may differ for each vehicle

1 Two positions lower (press the switch for a short period of time for each
position).
It is only possible to activate the kneeling function and the
super kneeling function at a very low speed. For certain
software programming, it is also necessary to apply the halt
brake or the parking brake.

2 Two positions higher (press the switch for a short period of time for each
position). It is only possible to activate the bus lane function and the ferry
lift function at a very slow speed. The vehicle will automatically return to
the normal driving height above a certain speed.

The height adjustment may only be used temporarily. In ferry


lift position drive only at a walking-pace. Be careful to ensure
that when adjusting the vehicle height that persons or
objects do not become trapped between the vehicle and the
road or the roof of a construction. Information symbol
“Vehicle not at driving level” appears on the main display
when the vehicle is either in the raised or lowered position.

The vehicle returns automatically to driving level if the


vehicle speed exceeds 30 km/h.

Air suspension driving level switch


The vehicle can be brought back to the normal driving level by pressing the
spring-return switch once. The switch can be used when the vehicle is
stationary or moving very slowly.
Be careful to ensure that when adjusting the vehicle height that
persons or objects do not become trapped between the vehicle
and the road or the roof of a construction.

2.4 Adjusting the position of the exterior mirrors


With this command you can adjust the position of the exterior mirrors.
- Turn the button to the left to select the left hand side mirror.

- Turn the button to the right to select the right hand side mirror.
When a rear view mirror has been selected, you can push the knob up and
down and to the left and to the right to adjust the position of the mirror glass.

2.5 Tachometer Simulator Unit (TSU)

The driver can use the tachograph to adjust the clock that is visible on the main
display.

Setting the minutes

To set the time, the main switch and the contact switch must be turned
on.

Use the buttons on the TSU as shown in the picture :

Hold down the + button or the - button until the desired


number of minutes (a) is shown in the display on the
instrument panel.

The minutes will be set when the button is released.

Setting the hours

The clock is displayed on the odometer and trip counter


on the instrument panel.

Use the buttons on the TSU as shown in the picture :

1. Hold down the + button and the - button for


three seconds.

2. Hold down the + button or the - button until the


desired number of hours (b) is shown in the main
display on the instrument panel.

The hours will be set when the button is released.


After three seconds, the TSU will return to the
starting position.

The date changes automatically when midnight is


passed.

2.6 Route indicator controller

Route numbers
Press the blue button to reach the Route mode: The route number sequence is:”Blank”,
0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, A, B, C, D, E, F.
Each digit in the route number is accessed individually using the seven black buttons.

Destination texts
Press the blue button to reach the Dest mode:
Select the destination text code using the seven black buttons. You can skim through the
codes by holding down one of the single digit buttons.

Extra texts
Press the blue button to reach the Extra mode:
Select the extra text code using the seven black buttons. You can skim through the
codes by holding down one of the single digit buttons.
Note! This position is only available if you have programmed extra texts.

2.7 Driver’s seat

For reasons of traffic safety it is imperative that the seat is not adjusted
when the vehicle is moving.

Operation

1. Horizontal adjustment
• Pull the lever upwards.
• Move the seat to the desired position.
• Release the lever and make sure the seat is locked in position.

2. Lowering
• Move the lever downwards: the seat will move downwards.
• Pull the lever upwards: the seat will move upwards to the desired position.

3. Vibration absorber adjustment


The seat’s comfort setting can be adjusted to create the perfect sitting experience on
any road surface for any driver by adjusting the vibration absorption.
• Pull the lever upwards: minimum absorption force (soft setting).
• Push the lever downwards: maximum absorption force (hard setting).

Risk of accidents
Set the vibration absorber so that the driver’s seat is able to absorb
vibrations caused by unevenness in the road surface.

4. Height adjustment
• Move the lever (upwards or downwards) and adjust the height of the seat.

5. Integrated pneumatic system (IPS – 3 buttons), lumbar support (LS – 2


buttons)
The integrated pneumatic system’s air cushions can be bled and aerated
independently from each other.
Bleeding or aerating the air cushions:
• Press the bottom of the “+” or the bottom of the “-” of the button concerned.

The backrest can then be adjusted to produce the ideal sitting experience for
every driver.

6. Unlocking the rotation setting


• Press the top button to rotate the chair.
• The chair can only be locked in the straight-ahead position.

7. Shoulder adjustment
• Pull the lever upwards.
• Apply a small force to the top part of the backrest.
• Release the lever once the backrest is in the desired position.

8. Backrest adjustment
• Lean against or away from the backrest.
• Pull the handle upwards.
• Move the backrest to the desired position.
• Release the lever once the backrest is in the desired position.

9. Tilt adjustment
• Pull the lever upwards and keep it in that position.
• At the same time, move the cushion to the desired angle by applying pressure to the
front of the cushion.

10. Horizontal adjustment of the cushion


• Pull the lever upwards.
• Move the cushion to the desired position.
• Release the lever to lock the position of the cushion.

11. Armrest
• Lift up armrest a little and adjust inclination by turning the wheel.

12. Heating
• Thermostatically controlled heating for the cushion and the backrest.

13. 3-point-belt
• Don’t twist the seat belt when fastening.
Make sure that the belt tongue engages correctly in the belt buckle.
The belt has to rest close against the body.
When unfasten, guide the belt tongue back to the belt retractor.

2.8 Doors

Opening the doors from the inside:

- Press the left switch button in order to open the entry door

- Press the right switch button in order to open the middle door

Closing the doors from the inside:

- Press the left switch button in order to close the entry door

- Press the right switch button in order to close the middle door

When leaving the vehicle :

The doors must be locked from the outside when leaving the vehicle.

- In case of an open middle door : press the right switch button in order to
close the middle door;

- Press the left switch button in order to open the entry door;
- Leave the vehicle via the entry door;
- Command the emergency valve from the outside, like this you can close the door
manually. Lock the entry door with a key;
- Lock the middle door with a key.

When you want to enter the vehicle :


- Unlock both doors (with a key), open the entry door manually (when the emergency
valve is commanded, the door can be openened manually);
- When the entry door is opened, re-activate the emergency valve;
- Enter the vehicle;
- Now you can command both doors with the switches on the left hand dashboard
panel.

Emergency operation of the entry door

In case of emergency you can let free the compressed air from the
door operation cylinders with the red emergency dump valve by
turning it 90° to the right.

After having freed the compressed air, the door can be manually opened.

Position of the emergency valves :

Entry door : outside : behind the side paneling (near the entry door).
inside : near the steps of the entry door

Middle door : outside : behind the side paneling (near the door)
inside : near the steps of the middle door

The driver needs to know where the valve is positioned.

The emplacement of the valve can differ from one vehicle to another.
This is why we advise the driver to check the position of
the emergency valve when driving the bus for the first time.

Locking the entry door :


- put the key in the lock
- turn the key 90° to the right, hold it that way
- turn the lock 90° to the left,
- turn the key back and remove it
- now the door is locked.

Opening the entry door :


- put the key in the lock
- turn the key 90° to the right, hold it that way
- turn the lock 90° to the right
- turn the key back and remove it
- now the door is unlocked

Unlocking from the interior (see figure)


- turn the button at the interior of the door to
the left.

Locking the middle door :


- turn the lock 90° to the left
- put the key in the lock
- turn the key 90° to the left
- remove the key

2.9 Ventilation hatches

The vehicle is equipped with two ventilation hatches.

A : Two handles (one on each side) in order


to open or to close the hatch manually.

B : Red emergency handles behind the plexi


glass protection cover.

The hatches have the following possibilities :

- closed
- front tilt
- rear tilt
- straight up
- as emergency exit hatch

- Push the handle upwards, in order to open


the ventilation hatch.

- Pull the handle downwards, in order to close


the ventilation hatch.

- To obtain the middle position, push both


handles upwards.

- Emergency exit : see next page

Emergency exit
If any emergency occurs, it may be possible that you have to leave the vehicle via the
emergency exits.

In order to use the ventilation hatches as an emergency exit, you’ll have :

- Remove the plexi glass protection cover.

- Pull the red emergency handles.

- Push the inner cover on the vehicle’s roof,


using both hands. Like this you get the
maximum exit opening.

2.10 Climatisation

The display panel consists of 5 touch keys, 1 set-point knob, a 3 digit display and various
display indicators.

1. ON/OFF KEY

To turn the unit ON, press the key. Display will show inside temperature.
To turn the unit OFF, press the key again.

If the Power On option is set, this key is for restart of controller only.

2. DISPLAY SELECT KEY - ENTER KEY

The DISPLAY select key is used to select the data to be displayed:


INSIDE TEMPERATURE in unit, INSIDE TEMPERATURE in second
section (floor heating, articulated unit,... ), OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE or
SETPOINT TEMPERATURE.
When the unit is turned on, the display will show default to INSIDE TEMP 1. If
the set point is changed by set point knob, the display will show the
temperature of set -point.
After 3 seconds automatically return to the last temperature display
In TEST MODE this key is used as ENTER KEY.

3. MODE SELECT KEY - TEST SELECT KEY

Reheat / Auto mode : The unit will cool or heat the bus automatically
(according to thermostat requirements).
A/C Mode : The unit will operate in cool mode.
Heat Mode : The unit will operate in heat mode.
Ventilation Mode : Only the blowers are operating.

4. SPEED SELECT KEY - DOWN KEY

Automatic Blower Speed : The blowers are controlled automatically


depending on the thermostat set point and passenger compartment
condition.
High Blower Speed
Medium Blower Speed
Low Blower Speed

5. FRESH AIR SELECT KEY - UP KEY - SMOG KEY

Automatic : Fresh air is automatically controlled in passenger


compartment.
Fresh air damper is open.
Fresh air damper is at 50% position.
Recirculated Air : Fresh air damper is closed

When the button is pushed first it will start the SMOG function for 10 min. This
is indicated by re-circulated air symbol plus the function symbol light up
together.
If the button is pushed again it will change to the next function.

DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM
The controller has a built-in function to perform a manual-test of all circuit
inputs and outputs on the A/C system. It is also equipped with a dual level
alarm system that provides WARNING (7) (yellow alarm symbol) and ALARM
(8) (red alarm symbol) shutdown of the unit.
Up to 40 alarms will be stored and alarm codes can be read by display.
History can be read by the PC only.

2.11 Front heater

1. ON/OFF Key
Press the key to turn the unit ON.
Press the key again to turn the unit OFF.

2. DOWN Key
Press the key to decrease the desired set point.
For permanent ventilation set LO on the display.
For permanent cooling set LO on the display and press the A/C key, LED A/C is
ON.

3. UP Key
Press the key to increase the desired set point.
For permanent heating set HI on the display.

The DOWN and UP keys are used as the scroll keys in the menu selection.

4. AUTO Key
Press the key to automatically control the blower speed according to the desired
set point and compartment conditions. LED AUTO is ON.
Auto mode: The unit will heat or ventilate the drivers compartment automatically
according to the desired set point and compartment conditions. LED A/C is
OFF.
Reheat/Auto mode: Press A/C key. The unit will cool or heat the drive
compartment automatically according to the desired set point and compartment
conditions. LED A/C is ON.
The AUTO key is used as the ESC key in the menu selection.

5. A/C Key
Press the key to start A/C. The unit will operate in the cool or in the reheat mode.
LED A/C is ON.

6. SMOG Key
Press the key to close the fresh air damper and to start the smog function.
The fresh air damper will be closed for 10 minutes. LED SMOG is ON.
After 10 minutes it will return to the previous function.
The parameter Smog Time ìStî can be set in the Set Up mode.
For manual control only, set the parameter ìStî to 00.

7. DEFROST Key
Press the key to start Defrost/Demist mode. The unit will defrost or demist the
windshield. LED DEFROST is ON.
This function has the highest priority. Keys AUTO and A/C, SPEED and AIR
DISTRIBUTION potentiometers are not active. The SMOG function is
cancelled by the active DEFROST function. To activate the SMOG function,
press the SMOG key again. The change of the desired set point will affect the
water valve and the compressor clutch functions.

The DEFROST key is used as the ENTER key in the menu selection.

8. SPEED Knob
Manual control of the stepless blower speed.
Turn the knob to the left to decrease the blower speed. Turn the knob to the right
to increase the blower speed. Turning of the knob will cancel AUTO mode.
LED AUTO is OFF.
The minimum blower speed to set is 20% of the maximum blower speed.

9. AIR DISTRIBUTION Knob


Manual control of the stepless air distribution damper.

Turn the knob to the left to distribute air to the driver.

Turn the knob to the middle to distribute air to the driver and to the windshield.

Turn the knob to the right to distribute air to the windshield.

10. DISPLAY
The display shows the real time when the system is OFF.
The display shows the required set point when the system is ON.
The brightness of the display and LEDís are controlled automatically according
to external light conditions.

3. Maintenance and minor repairs
3.1 Opening & Closing the front flap

This front hatch is specially designed to give you full access to the front of your vehicle.

A few steps are needed in order to open and close the front hatch :

1. First open the corner pieces,


by pushing the levers of both locks.

2. Pull the corner piecs in order to open


them completely.

3. Now you can open the middle part,


by pulling at the bottom side.

And now you have full access to the vehicle


front.

Procedure to close the front flap :

1. First close the middle part, by pushing it


downwards.

2. Close both corners (till you hear the locks


clicking)

3.2 Electricity box

The electricity box is in the luggage compartment, along driver’s side.

In this box you’ll find the VDL Jonckheere part, like printed
circuits, relays, fuses, . . . and Origin VDL Bus components.

3.3 Replacing fuses

General
If an electrical component fails to operate this may be because a fuse has burned out due to
temporary overload.

The vehicle's fuses are in the electricity box (see previous page).

Look in the fuse list supplied to see which fuse is to be checked.

Pull the fuse straight out and look inside to see


if the bent wire is burned out.

Replace if necessary with a new fuse of the


same colour code and capacity. The amperage
is stated on the fuse.

Never replace a blown fuse with one of a higher capacity.

If fuses in the same location burn out repeatedly, there is a failure in the electrical installation
and the vehicle must be taken to a workshop for inspection.

3.4 Replacing switches and lamps of dashboard

Replacing switches

When a switch is malfunctioning, you have to replace it:


- First loosen the respective panel of the dashboard by
unscrewing the screws in the corners of the panel
- Remove the two connectors on the back of the switch
- Push in the two lips on both sides of the switch (see figure)
- Push the switch out of the panel
- In order to replace the switch, push a new switch back in the
opening in the panel
- Mount a new symbol plate
- Mount the two connectors on the back of the switch
- Fasten the panel in the dashboard

- You also have to loosen the respective panel


- Remove the bipolar connector
- Replace the broken lamp by a new one

3.5 Replacing and adjusting of front lamps

Open the corner parts as described in chapter 3.1 (page 24).

After you have opened the corner parts, you have full access to adjust the front lights and/or
to replace the lamps.

3.6 Replacing of interior lighting

The lighting units are mounted in the ventilation


racks.

In order to replace a lamp :

- On both ends of the lighting unit there is


a white cover part.

- First remove one cover part;

- once this cover part is removed , you can


easily remove the plexi glass, and now you
have full access to replace the lamp.

3.7 Maintenance Climatisation

3.7.1. Front heater

Cleaning the filters : (at least every 2 month or each 15.000 km)

- Remove the 2 bolts (A).

- After removing the 2 bolts (A),


the filter frame (B) can be
removed from the front heater.

- After opening the filter frame (B)


the filter (C) can be removed for
cleaning or replacement if
necessary.

- Access through the intake grid inside


the vehicle.

- Open the intake grids (at the left and


at the right) (A).

- Remove clamps (B).

for cleaning or replacement if
necessary.

Clean roof unit filters : (at least every 2 months or each 15.000 km)

- Access through the roof unit, open the cover at the left and at the right and clean the
outside air filters (even in winter time).

- Remove the fixation plates (A)

- Now the filter (B) can be removed for


cleaning or replacement if necessary.

Replace the Air drier filter : (every year)

- The Air drier filter (A) in the Air conditioning installation must be replaced every year.

Due to security reasons this


must be done by an experienced
refrigerating engineer.

3.7.3. Water filter

Clean water filter :

This filter is cleaned by us right before delivering the vehicle to the customer.

It is recommended to clean this filter again after 500 to 1000 kms. Hereafter we
recommend to clean it every 3 months at the least.

Close the valve (A) above the filter, unscrew the filter body and clean the filter with clear
water.

3.7.4. Clean the filter gauze

In order to keep the air conditioning unit functioning well, it is important to respect the
service intervals.

There are several ways of cleaning the filter gauze:

- With compressed air

Blow the dust out of the filter gauze.


Take care: always blow from the most proper side to the most filthy side.

- In the shower (for instance in your hotel room)

Clean the filter gauze with the shower head using warmish water.
Take care: always spray from the most proper side to the most filthy side.

- Washing the filter gauze

It is also possible to wash the filter gauze in a warmish soapy water.


Please do not use an abrasive soap, rather use a detergent like the one you use for
washing your dishes.

Never wring out the filter gauze in order to let it dry quickier. Rather shake it out.

Damaged filter gauze needs to be replaced immediately.

It is recommended to always have a spare set of filter gauze in the vehicle (especially for
journeys of several days).

3.8 Air Conditioning

Advice:
We advise to activate the Airco every month (for at least 30 minutes) (also
during the winter)
This way a lot of difficulties can be avoided at the beginning of the summer.
Notice: When the interior temperature is lower than the set temperature of the
Airco, you’ll have to increase the interior temperature (otherwise the Airco
can’t function).

Attention : General safety regulations and environmental


protection

- Coolant and coolant fumes are harmful to health!


- Avoid every contact.
- Wear safety glasses and gloves! If skin or eyes do get touched by coolant,
then call immediately for a doctor.
- Don’t let gaseous coolant escape in closed spaces - danger of suffocation.
- Exhaust the coolant with an exhauster!
- Soldering or welding parts of the installation or near to it, isn’t allowed, even
if the coolant has been removed - danger of explosion and intoxication.
- Don’t clean parts of the installation with a steam cleaner.

3.9 Doors

Rubbers become stiff through the years.


If you do not treat these rubbers, the sealing of the doors will decrease.
By threatening the rubbers they stay flexible.
Do not use any vaseline (petroleum jelly), as this product freezes in winter.
We advise you to use a silicon spray.

Frequency :
- during the summer : every 6 months
- during the winter : every month

3.10 Ventilation hatches


The ventilation hatches are almost maintenance free. Nevertheless it is advisable that
when the winter period begins, you treat the sealing rubbers with a protective product.
It is also advisable to check the functions of the ventilation hatches, like opening,
closing, sealing, solidity, etc . . . , meanwhile you need to remove all dirt from the
sealing rubbers.

3.11 Maintenance of side flap locks

3.11.1 Flaps with square key locks


It is recommended to blow out the square key locks with
compressed air in order to remove the dirt.
Don’t use too much grease when you lubricate these
locks, because dirt easily sticks into the grease.
And after a while this could give difficulties when
opening or closing these locks.

3.11.2. Flaps with handgrip locks

3.11.2.1 Maintenance
- open the flap
- remove the round covers at the rear of
the flap (in order to get access to the
locks)
- lubricate the locks (on both sides of the
flap) with an oilcan.

3.11.2.2 Adjustment

* You can check these locks:


- when the flap is open, push both locks
manually into their closing position
(see fig)
- command the handgrip handle
(as you would do to open the flap)
- both locks must jump open at the
same time
- if not you will have to adjust them

* Adjustment:
- remove the round covers
- adjust by pressing (or by enlarging) the
loop of the connecting bars (see fig.)
- check the adjustment again

3.12 Replacement of the windscreen

3.12.1 Removal of broken windscreen


- Remove the windscreen wipers
- Remove the profile that is inserted in the rubber profile.
- Cut the rubber all around the broken windscreen and remove it in order that you can
see the glass.
- Push-out the window from inside.
- After having removed the windscreen it is necessary to clean the window frame.
(remove all rubber and sealer)
- Treat, if necessary the metal profile with an anti-corrosion paint

3.12.2 Fitment of windscreen


- Apply the rubber to the windscreen. Start in the middle
of the upper side.
- Treat the ends of the rubber with sandpaper.
- Apply glue to one of the sides and then push both ends
together
- Open the groove in the rubber strip by dragging a hook
through it. (see Fig.l) Fig. 1
- Insert a cord into the body side of the rubber and apply
pressure with the hook. (see Fig. 2) Start + 25 cm above
the corner (a) and two times clockwise around the screen
in order to stop at + 25 cm above corner (b) (see Fig.3)
- Attach the cord ends with adhesive tape to the inner side
of the screen. Apply soft soap to the window frame.
- Mark the middle of the window frame and the middle of
the windscreen.
- Position the windscreen on the lower border of the
window frame with two persons meanwhile a third person Fig. 2
must pull out the cord at the inside (only the lower side).
In this way the rubber lip (c) is drawn over the edge of the
window frame.
- Check the position of the windscreen: it must be centred
in the window frame.
- Then the two persons at the outside must push the
windscreen lightly to the window frame so the third person
at the inside can pull out the cord from the sides and at Fig. 3

last from the upper side of the window.


- Then by means of the hook the rubber lip is properly applied.
- Mounting of the filler strip:
- Apply soap to the rubber profile at the location (d) where the filler strip will be fitted.
Start in the middle of the upper side of the windscreen.
- Press in the filler strip and pull the rubber over the filler strip by means of a hook.
- Apply Terrodicht around the entire circumference of the windscreen between the rubber
and the frame. Do the same between glass and rubber.
- Remove the superfluous sealing putty with a spatula.

3.13 Replacing side windows

3.13.1 Description
The side windows are glued on the frame. The product used for this operation is Beataseal.
It is a one component glue-paste. Under influence of the air humidity, it forms an elastic
mass with excellent mechanical characteristics and with an exceptional resistance against
transformations.
3.13.2 Products
- Degreaser RL N-4 ref. 100.340.201
- Glass-primer ref. 100.340.212
- Beataseal (package of 300 ml) ref. 100.900.107
- Pump to extrude adhesive sealant
- Suction pads to position window
- Rubber buffer blocks ± 20x30x3
3.13.3 Removal of broken side window
- Remove the outside trimming by taking away the middle strip.
- Cut the filling material with a knife or a sharp blade.
- Push out the window from inside. Take care of little glass parts. Protect the outside of
the vehicle by putting paper or something else on it.
- Remove all parts of remaining Beataseal. When the metal profile is naked, clean
thoroughly and degrease with trichlorethane. Naked metal should then be treated with
Wash-primer.
3.13.4 Bonding technique
- As a preliminary control, present the window
to the frame to check if the window measu-
rements comply with those of the window
frame.
- Stick the rubber blocks. Check if the window
is at the same level as the other windows.
- Clean the borders of the window with
degreaser RL N-4
- Dry the borders with pure cloths.
Be careful: leave no fingerprints on the surface.
- With a brush, adapt the thin film of glass-primer on the border of the window.
Drying time about 5 minutes. Longer drying time does no harm.
- Extrude Beataseal on the window frame. Extrude more Beataseal at the corners.
- Fit the window in the frame within 10 minutes.
- Press slightly on the glass in order to get a good contact with the mass at all places.
Fix the window with metal plates screwed in the frame.
- Check the water tightness. When necessary: extrude more Beataseal where there is
no good contact. It is recommended to have a Beataseal strip of about ± 4 mm thick-
ness and ± 10 mm width. Superfluous Beataseal should be removed as quickly as
possible with Xylene or Cellulose thinner. The speed of polymerization depends of the
ambient humidity. For a layer of ± 2 mm, polymerization takes approximately 24 hours.
- Open holes or splits must be carefully filled with Beataseal.
- Finishing of the windows:
- tape up the windows fill the split around the windows
- smooth out with a spatula
- Fit the middle strip again.

3.14 De-aeration of windscreen washer system

The vehicle is provided with a 20 litres water tank for the windscreen washers.

The water tank of the windscreen washers is placed in the luggage compartment, near the
electricity box (right side of the vehicle)

When the water tank of the windscreen washer system has been empty, you will have to
de-aerate the sprinkler system :

- disconnect the water pipe just before the


one-way valve;

- command the water sprinklers (from the dash-


board), do this until water sprinkles out
of the water pipe;

- while the water sprinkles out of the water pipe,


reconnect the water pipe to the one-way valve.

3.15 Maintenance of the interior
- The floor can be cleaned with water and a soap solution. For difficult stains, use a cloth
soaked into cleaning alcohol.
- For ceiling, carpets and seats use a vacuum cleaner. For difficult stains use a cloth
soaked into cleaning alcohol.
- The window pillars can be easily cleaned with a cloth soaked into cleaning alcohol.
- For the dashboard you can use a cloth lightly soaked into water or into cleaning alcohol.
Product used: cleaning alcohol: - a deneutralized petrol

3.16 Maintenance of the body

3.16.1 Washing
It is very important to follow a certain order when washing the bus.
The method of washing consists of 3 actions:

- Prewashing the body


This means that the vehicle will be washed with a lot of clean water. This treatment is
necessary in order to soak off the dirt, which would cause scratches into the body
during the real washing. Use a soft brush when prewashing, only bring some slight
pressure on the brush.

- Washing the body


After prewashing, the real washing starts. Use a light soap solution. You can wash
with a sponge as well as with a brush. The soap has to be as neutral as possible.
Alkaline soap should be avoided because this would harm the body. The vehicle has
to be rinsed with as much clean water as possible; in order to remove all soap rests.
Sticking soap rests would harm the body.

- Drying the vehicle


Has to be done with a clean shammy.

3.16.2 Removing tar stains


Tar stains can be easily removed with a cloth soaked into cleaning alcohol. Let the
alcohol get into the stains while making movements under a slight pressure. Only slight
pressure is allowed because dirt is usually mixed into the tar stains and this could cause
scratches if you push too hard. After cleaning the surface, it has to be washed and
cleaned thoroughly.

3.16.3 Polishing the body


When the body painting becomes dim, the surface of the body can get a polishing
operation. It is recommended to carry out this treatment only once a year. The polishing
itself can be done with a non-abrasive fluid polish.

3.17 Corrosion treatment and after-treatment

3.17.1 Originally applied underbody protection


During the production process, a product which complies with the following requirements is
sprayed onto the vehicle: sufficient protection against:
- humidity
- road-metal
- aggressive climatological conditions
- salt (for icy roads) (salt haze test according to ASTM B117 > 500).
- heat

The dried layer stays elastic and forms a closed mass with an excellent fixation for the
chassis.

3.17.2 After-treatment underbody


As after-treatment, we suggest to use a similar product and this only on damaged places.
Method:
- Spray off the chassis with a high-pressure purifier
- Inspecting the bottom part visually
- Preliminary treatment of places that have been severely damaged (mechanically
and paint technically)
- Apply underbody protection on the repaired place after drying
- In case of light damages (when primer layer is not damaged), only apply
underbody protection where the closed mass has been damaged

Frequency: visual inspection after every accident or max. every 24 months when driving
on normal roads

3.17.3 Originally applied protection hollow space


The interior protection of the lower tubes of the space frame is done according to the ML-
method.
Holes with a diameter of 8 mm are drilled into all tubes, and this every meter or 1 hole per
profile in case < 1 m. After cleaning, the preserving layers are to be applied, before spray-
ing a product under pressure that has the following characteristics:
- gives a durable protection against corrosion
- high penetration ability
- good temperature resistance well dispersible high solid substance
- percentage (security)
- elastic film
- excellent fixation to lacquered and white metal plate
- does not affect lacquer used on vehicles

The holes are sealed with synthetic plug.

After-treatment and frequency:


We advise to repeat the interior treatment before and after every winter period. As for
tubes where no water can pour through and which are completely closed, a 3-yearly in-
spection will be sufficient according to the suppliers of the products. Use a flexible and
cover all interior places or use a fixed nozzle with a spraying capacity left and right of at
least 50 cm.

3.17.4 Guarantee conditions
The vehicles will be treated against corrosion in our workshops. The chassis as well as the
side panelling will get an anti-corrosion treatment. On request, tubes will also be treated. In
order to obtain an anti-corrosion guarantee, the following measures need to be taken:
- In case rust appears: repair immediately in order to prevent spreading. In case of
negligence, the guarantee conditions will not stand.
- Inspect the condition of the bottom part of the vehicle before winter, and repair
anticorrosion damages if necessary.
- After the winter: spray off the bottom part of the vehicle in order to remove salt
remainders. Use cold water without detergents or products on the basis of a petro-
leum derivative.
- Inspect the condition of the protecting anti-corrosion coating; repair the protective
coating when damaged. Use quality products!
- Check corners, boarders and seams regularly (delicate places !)
