Assignment: Dynamics

1. Does a body necessarily move in the direction of the net force acting on it?
Explain (2 points).

2. The piece of machinery shown in the figure below, in which two masses are
suspended over a pulley, is called an Atwood's machine. Block A has a mass of
1.2 kg and block B has a mass of 3.2 kg. Assuming the pulley is massless and
frictionless, and that the cord is massless and doesn't stretch, calculate:
(a) the acceleration of the system (4 points)
(b) the tension in the cord (2 point)

B
A

2. A 0.128 kg baseball is pitched horizontally at + 43 m/s. After it is hit by the bat, it

moves at - 43 m/s.

a) What impulse did the bat deliver to the ball? (2 points)

b) If the bat and ball were in contact for 0.80 ms, what was the average force the
bat exerted on the ball? (2 points)

c) Find the average acceleration of the ball during its contact with the bat. (1
point)

3. A mass M = 5.6 kg is on a horizontal table and is pulled by a horizontal string that

passes over a frictionless pulley to another mass m = 3.4 kg hanging on the end of
the string. The coefficient of friction between M and the table is 0.28 N. What is
the magnitude and direction of the acceleration of M? (5 points)

[Hint: The magnitude of the acceleration is between 1.5 m/s 2 and 2.2 m/s2.]
4. In throwing a 150 g ball straight up, your hand exerts a force of 9.4 N for 0.28 s
while it is in contact with the ball. How high does the ball rise after leaving your
hand? (4 points)

[Hint: The answer is between 14 m and 19 m.]
