1st Grade
This will be useful for 1st grade students as they begin in their early education is
learning a secondary language. Being bilingual is useful though it may not be
important. It is best to teach students in their early age so they can progress
efficiently since they have not developed enough to get used to their first language
yet.
Group Size
A regular classroom with more than 20 or so students is fine. With that amount, I
am able to teach the basics. Though A smaller group or an individual teaching is
good, I prefer a whole class because I want to see many students progress in the
language and improve over the years.
Subject
Tagalog is a good language to learn because there many filipinos migrating to the
states to seek a good future. With this, it would be nice to learn the language to
better communicate with filipino americans. There is a majority of spanish
speakers in the states, hence why spanish is the secondary option when selecting
a language. Then there is Chinese, French, and so on.
Objective
To learn one basic topic in the subject, students will be provided colored shapes to
mess around with. I will put up shapes without color with the names on the board
and the colors on one side so that students can match the right color to the right
shape. They will be labeled to make it easy for the students of course, but will
gradually grow difficult over time to test their skills and knowledge and see if they
improved or not.
Materials
● Printed white square, circle, triangle, rectangle.
● It’ll have their tagalog counterpart labels printed.
● Crayons that will be provided for students.
● Whiteboard or Smartboard.
● And tagalog counterparts for colors.
Procedures on Shapes
● Start by giving the students the clear printed out shapes with the printed
labels in English and Tagalog, then pronounce each shape in English and
then their tagalog counterpart. Do that for a few minutes making sure to
practice and go through it with them, then move on to the next part.
● Have the students pronounce the shapes only in tagalog so it can be
embroidered into their memory, this means it should only be the clear printed
out shapes and tagalog labels.
● Now take the labels away and quiz the students on each shape they have on
their desks.
● Then take away the shapes and quiz the class by putting up a shape on the
whiteboard or smartboard. From class quizzing, move on to individual
meaning picking out a students to make sure that no one is behind.
Procedures on Colors
● Once students feel comfortable with shapes, introduce students to a few colors such
as White, Black, Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, Purple, Pink
● Technically just focusing on main colors so it is not too much information to take in.
Give students the English and Tagalog labels. Then allow the students to take a few
minutes of their time to study each and every color
● From there, Test the students to see how comfortable they feel about colors
● After everyone is all good to go, move on to implementing colors with shapes.
● Putting a color inside of a shape will sum up to the color then the shape like red
triangle or green square. Then once everyone seems to be comfortable with that.
● Take the materials away and give them a worksheet, but grade only for participation
because it is okay to fail. It is a practice sheet to help them learn.
