Throughout the year I have learned a great deal about writing indifferent scenarios and in

different ways that better fit my interests. I have never been a big fan of writing, its remained one

of my least favorite school activities for many years. Recently however, I have uncovered a

hidden likeness for writing within. I do not love writing that is for sure, but I do not despise it

like I used to. I have realized that writing is just like talking in a way, and that I had never

enjoyed writing because I approached it as if it were always a super formal thing, but I have been

able to enjoy it much more by acting like I was just talking to a friend when I write and really put

my thoughts on the page.

My writing can still use a ton of work. I will admit that. I have become a very cathartic

writer and I often get swept up in many grandiose ideas and neglect many important parts of the

writing. My writing needs much more technical refinement in terms of sentence structure and

“flow”. I am sure I will improve on these abilities more and more as I inevitably write more and

more in my college career.

My favorite assignment that we did in this class is the literary criticism essay. I was very

surprised with the Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and I had a lot to say about it. I used many skills

that I had acquired in previous years from AP Literature and AP Language. This one was my

favorite because it was the writing assignment that I can think back to most clearly that I spent

the most time on and that I enjoyed writing the most.

When I receive an essay to write in the future the first thing that I will do is become well

versed in the topic of the essay through research. This is important because to be respected by

potential readers of your essay you need to know what you are talking about. The next thing I

would do is establish my own personal view on the topic, how can I be unique? What can I say

about this topic that will be interesting to read and the reader may not have seen before? The next

thing I would do is become passionate about the writing of the essay, one of the greatest pieces

of advice I have ever been given by a teacher is that I need to be passionate about what I’m doing

to be successful. Then, I would write my essay, maybe all at once, maybe over the course of a

week. Once I have finished my first draft, I would than revise and edit it to make it the best it can

possibly be.
