Document Development Exposition: Workplace Correspondence

Explain in detail your document’s development from planning to finish, describing your
challenges, how you overcame them, and what you learned.

Planning
I knew I wanted to try to make this assignment an extension of the White Paper assignment in some
way since I already had a lot of information on the organization that I used for the White Paper
assignment. The hardest part of this assignment was coming up with a hypothetical problem for the
real organization. This is the first assignment I have ever had to write like this. To make a plan for this
assignment I tried to find a real issue with the CALFIRE website. Once I found the issue, I tried to
brainstorm some possible solutions and who would be able to implement the solutions. This would
be the internal audience.

First Draft (for peer editing)

As the power point for this module mentioned, I wanted to be able to cover the issue and solution in
detail while keeping things as brief as possible. That was the main focus of my drafts which is
probably why this assignment was not as strong as far as having a clear audience. I learned from this
assignment to always focus on making sure to fully satisfy the assignment requirements with specific
goals.

Second Draft (for your packet)

The biggest challenge for me in this draft was trying to figure out the best way to revise my
document. The assignment requirements were not super specific since the problem/solution could
be anything, so I also ended up making a broad solution and a big audience. Instead, I should have
been more specific and realistic. I learned a lot from this assignment. I think the biggest thing I can
take away from this assignment is the experience of writing like this. This is the first assignment
where I have had to come up with a realistic problem of an organization and form an internal
document detailing it and how to fix it.

Final Draft (for your portfolio)

I would like mention that the canvas notes stated that there were comments in my document for this
assignment and I did not see any. I do not know if this was a typo since the canvas comments were
very detailed. The main issue with my second draft was not being specific enough and some areas
were lacking to the point to where they were unclear. To fix this I added to the introduction and
summary in order to give the audience a clearer idea of what the problem was and what the solution
was. I also revised the rest of the document where needed to better describe the solutions. The
recommendations section also did not fit the rest of the memo, so I rewrote it to match the rest of
the memo. I also tried to make the audience more specific to make this assignment more realistic.
