Military Customs and Traditions

 Introduction: Often it is these customs and traditions, strange to the civilian


eye but solemn to the soldier, that keep the man in the uniform going in the
unexciting times of peace. In war they keep him fighting at the front.

 Definition in Terms:

TRADITIONS
- Are inherited principles, standards, and policies that serve as guides for
an individual or group.

CUSTOMS
- Accepted practices realized through continued usage that take the force
and effect of common law.

TRADITION OF VALOR
- It is gallantry in the face of clear danger. Knowing how and when to fight
and fight with honor.

TRADITION OF DUTY
- Perform your tasks with deep sense of responsibility and self-sacrifice!
This is shown by serving up to more than 24 hours of duty without hesitation and
question.

TRADITION OF VALOR

TRADITION OF HONOR
- Leading a life in peace or war in personal dignity and self-worth.

- This is a sign of respect and gesture of farewell tendered to a departed
comrade-in-arms.

THE WHITE FLAG OF TRUCE


- Use to signal the temporary cessation of hostilities between warring
factions.

WEARING OF DECORATIONS
- Decorations and medals shall be worn proudly when it is worn.
- it shall show others our dearest accomplishments.

THE RAISING OF THE RIGHT HAND IN TAKING OATH


- From the earliest days, the taking of an oath for truth of statement or
testimony has been a solemn and serious matter accompanied by ceremony.

COURTESY OF THE POST


- Short duration of stay in a camp is extended to members of the armed
forces and they can use the camp’s facilities similar to permanent party.

PRESENTATION OF RECRUITS
- This is a ceremony where new soldiers are presented to the color for the
purpose of signifying acceptance and welcome into the organization.

FAREWELL TENDERED TO A DEPARTING OFFICER


- Tendered to personnel for a change of assignment usually given by the
unit’s officer and personnel.
- When time is a constraint, a happy hour will do.

CEREMONY TENDERED TO RETIREE


- In recognition of his long and fruitful and honorable service to the afp.

- This add more distinction and excitement to the regimented life of a
soldier.

PHILIPPINE ARMY UNIFORMS

DESIGNATED UNIFORMS AND OCCASIONS FOR THEIR WEAR

Formal Dress: Army White Duck Uniform (AWDU) - is composed of Army white coat
and trousers and white shirt and black tie.

General Description - The white coat is a single breasted, peaked lapel,


four (4) button as per regulation extending below the crotch, fitting easily over the chest
and shoulders with a slight draped effect in front and back. The coat shall be fitted
slightly at the waist conforming to the figure without tightness and no prominent flare.

Army Mess Jacket Uniform (AMJU) - is composed of the Army white


jacket, black high waist trousers, white pleated dress shirt, black cummerbund (sash).

General Description - The jacket, which is cut on the tines of an evening


dress coat, descends to the point of the hips and is slightly curved to a peak in back and
in front. Two AFP regulation small brass button, joined by a small gold or gold color
chain about 4 cm long may be worn in the upper buttonholes. The shoulders are
provided with a means of attaching shoulder board on the officer uniforms.

Semi-Formal Dress: Army Bush Coat - General Description - The coat is single-
breasted, midsection button is hidden with built-in belt, and sleeves side pressed fitting
easily over the chest and shoulder, with a slight draped effect in front and back. The
coat shall be fitted slightly at the waist conforming to the figure without tightness and
with no prominent flare.

Army Service Blouse - is composed of coat and trousers, and green long
sleeve and a green four-in-hand necktie.

Working Uniforms (As prescribed by the Commander): General Office Uniform (GOU)
- Is composed of Army green trousers and mint green short
sleeve.

Occasions for Wear


a. The GOU green is acceptable as semiformal attire and can be used
during social functions are prescribed by the host.
b. GOU Green is a duty uniform or General Office Uniform for garrison or
installation.

Battle Dress Uniform (BDU) - Composed of a camouflage Coat,


Trousers and beret/lousy hat, camouflage.

Occasions for Wear


BDU may only be worn on duty when prescribed by the
Commander. This uniform is used as utility, field, training, or combat uniform and is not
intended to be worn as an all-purpose uniform when other uniforms are more
appropriate. This may also be used by parading elements during ceremonial activities
and during Red Alert Status. Variations in the combination with other uniform may
however be prescribed by Commanders.

Physical Fitness or Athletic uniform

The physical fitness or athletic uniform may be worn on and off


duty when authorized by the Commander when engaged in physical training both on
and off the military installation. This uniform may be worn in transit between the
Individual's common quarters and duty station. Soldiers may wear all or parts of the
athletic uniform at their discretion, when not on the installation.
