PROGRAMME : BSC (HONS) CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY

SEMESTER : 05
COURSE : AVANCED CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS
CODE : BCT613
TASK : Lab Report

Instruction for Lab Report

1. Understand the classification of different concrete types, in terms of their high

and/or special performances in practice
2. Understand the basics of mix design and material selection
3. Understand the test methods specified for assessing fresh and hardened
properties of concrete.

This assignment project should be prepared by a group of four or five members. For
this assignment, each group is required to investigate the difference between normal
class and special class concrete from previous literature (minimum 3 literatures).
Please choose ONE of the special concrete types listed as below:

1. Lightweight concrete
2. Fiber reinforced concrete
3. Self compacting concrete
4. Geopolymer
5. Flexible concrete
6. Recycled aggregate concrete
7. Polymer concrete

(*Note that the topic selected by the group must differ from those of the other groups)

and make the review and analysis in the following aspects:

1. Explain the basics of mix design, material selection and production process
2. Explain the test method, the test procedure and the properties of the
concrete in the following state :

1. Plastic State
Workability properties
2. Hardened State
Three types of mechanical strength properties – (i.e Compressive, flexural
and tensile strength)
Non destructive test – Two types of NDT (i.e UPV and density)
Two types of durability properties – Water absorption, porosity or etc
