1. Critically examine the following statements in about 150 words each:
(a) "Community consciousness was not a medieval phenomenon but a colonial construction."

(c) "The permanent settlement in Bengal was as per the requirements of British East India
Company."

(e) "The emerging nationalism in India changed the flow of social reform movements."

2. (a) "The emergence of Indian nationalism could be traced in the second half of the 19th century
and the new middle class played the important role in it." Comment.
(b) "On the economic side the Eighteenth century was not a period of total stagnation either,
as there had been considerable regional variation." Critically analyse.
(c) "Perhaps it was the only Maratha state that had the potential to develop into a new pan-

the nature of the Maratha polity itself." Critically analysis.
3. (a) "The provision for education in 1813 Charter Act opened the battle ground for different
philosophical groups in India." Critically analyse.
(b) "Political activity of any kind either appears to stem from a high degree of social freedom
that already prevails or the very act of participation is taken to bring about an instant
liberation, a permanent revolution in wider social status." In the light of above statement
examines the politicization of women in Bengal in the first half of the 20th Century.
(c) "Most of the revolts or uprising in 19th century including 1857 revolt was 'restorative' in
nature." Critically Analyse.

(a) "Deindustrialization of India was planned British policy towards India."
(b) "Women reforms in the first half of the 19th century ultimately failed to bring any ground
level change in the society."
(c) "It was Lord Ripon who realized the political importance of the Indian middle class."
(d) "Dupleix' failure against English can be explained in terms of various factors."
(e) "The British education policy endorsed and supported differentiation in Indian society."

5. (a) Do you really think that Ryotwari settlement empowered and improved the conditions of
peasants in Medras Presidency?
(b) "There was considerable commercial expansion during the early Eighteenth century and
the obvious connection between trade and empire was also hard to ignore." Critically
analysis.
(c) To what extent the commercialization of Indian agriculture was good for peasantry
community?
6. (a) "Peasant and tribal rebellions before the rise of modern nationalism is considered precursor
of national movement." Critically analyse.
(b) "Tipu Sultan was much ahead to his contemporary rulers and his defeat by company ended
the last hope for India." Critically Evaluate.
(c) Evaluate the importance of Subsidiary alliance policy of British East India Company in
consolidation of empire.
