1. Critically examine the following statements in about 150 words each:
(a) "Community consciousness was not a medieval phenomenon but a colonial construction."

2. (a) "The emergence of Indian nationalism could be traced in the second half of the 19th century
and the new middle class played the important role in it." Comment.
(b) "On the economic side the Eighteenth century was not a period of total stagnation either,
as there had been considerable regional variation." Critically analyse.
(c) "Perhaps it was the only Maratha state that had the potential to develop into a new pan-

liberation, a permanent revolution in wider social status." In the light of above statement
examines the politicization of women in Bengal in the first half of the 20th Century.
(c) "Most of the revolts or uprising in 19th century including 1857 revolt was 'restorative' in
nature." Critically Analyse.
