Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and evaluated by the


Development and Quality Assurance Teams of SDO TAPAT to assist you in helping
the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming
their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist
the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

For the learner:

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities
for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be
enabled to process the contents of the learning resource while being an active
learner.

The following are some reminders in using this module:

1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any part of
the module. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises.

This module was designed and written for you, dear grade 8 students. In
particular, it will be a great help to you in formulating a statement of opinion and
assertion especially when asked to stand on an issue. You will understand the
merit of factual information in solidifying your opinion and argument. To better suit
your learning process, gradual development of topic was put into consideration

from simple determination of factual and opinionated statements to a more
complicated composition of persuasive expression.

After going through this module, you are expected to:


1. know something about Abdur Raheem Mccarthy;
2. learn Mccarthy’s purpose in his speech by listening and viewing;
3. identify biased statements from the speaker’s speech: and
4. examine bias statements using headlines of two different TV network.

ABDUR-RAHEEM MCCARTHY

Abdur-Raheem McCarthy is an Irish-American who accepted Islam in 1994 and


traveled to Sudan to study Islam. He furthered his studies by relocating to
Saudi Arabia to study Quraan, Tajweed, and the Arabic language. He was then
accepted into the Islamic University of Madinah and enrolled into the Arabic
Institute and then graduated from the faculty of Da’wah and Usool Ad-Deen.

Since graduation in 2006 he has become a renowned international speaker


lecturing around the world at conferences, events and a presenter on Peace TV,
Huda TV and others. He has worked in the field of Da’wah alongside several
prominent Da’wah organizations and in the field of Islamic education teaching
Islamic studies in Sudan and Dubai.
