OVERVIEW OF
ORTHOPEDIC SURGERY
FMP CLT’s weekly career posts have covered the
education, training, and day-to-day life of a typical
orthopedic surgeon. Orthopedic surgery is the field
of surgery involved with conditions that concern the
musculoskeletal system. These highly specialized
surgeons work for the prevention, diagnosis, and
treatment of disorders of the bones, joints,
ligaments, tendons and muscles.

In order to become an orthopedic surgeon, four

years of undergrad, four years of medical school,
and at least five years of residency are
mandatory. It is typical for residents to practice in a
fellowship program to specialize in a specific type of
orthopedic surgery, such as foot and ankle surgery.
Orthopedic surgery has one of the longest residency
programs. The general residency atmosphere is
known for being competitive, having a grueling
training process, including a taxing schedule, and
requiring a good deal of time. While residency in
this field is difficult, the outcomes are definitely
worth it!
