Overview of OB-GYN
Surgery
FMP CLT’s weekly career posts have covered the
education, training, and day-to-day life of a typical
OB-GYN Surgeon. OB-GYN doctors are doctors who
specialize in women’s reproductive parts. OB stands
for obstetrician and GYN stands for gynecologist. An
obstetrician deals with all aspects of pregnancy, from
prenatal care to postnatal care, and a gynecologist
diagnoses and treats issues related to the female
reproductive tract. An OB-GYN specializes in
performing both.

To become a licensed OB-GYN, one must undergo 4

years of a basic college education, during which
students will major in pre-med, and/or biological,
chemical, and/or physical sciences, 4 years of medical
school learning general medicine, anatomy,
physiology, and clinical experience, a 4-7 year
residency including an internship, and routine exams.

This education is one of the hardest to go through as

OB-GYNs are also surgeons and must train through one
of the longest residencies in medicine. Because OB-
GYNs are considered personal doctors, they must be
able to be respectful to the patient, while also being
able to build a trusting relationship with them in
order to guide them through all stages of womanhood
associated with pregnancy, reproduction, and hygiene.
