GRAMMAR: Transitive & Intransitive verbs
Do you know…..?
 Transitive verbs take an object while intransitive ones do not.
Examples: They do not sell telephone directories. (T)
Textbooks sell very well at the beginning of the school year. (I)
 Transitive verbs can have the passive form while intransitive verbs do not.
 A number of verbs, like sell, are both transitive and intransitive.
 Some verbs, transitive or intransitive, require an adverbial to complete the meaning.
 Some transitive verbs do not have the passive form.
Example: Telephone directories are not sold.
The lady then put the guidebook down.
The apartment sleeps six people. (transitive – no passive)

I)-Read the precautions for safety, and decide whether the underlined verbs are transitive or intransitive
ones. Which ones can be put in the passive voice?
Water-Skiing
 Don’t water-ski when in bad weather – stop any activities when you hear or see a storm.
 Stay well clear of other boats, docks, or obstacles.
 Be sure there is an observer who can keep an eye on you and send messages to the driver.
 Equip the boat with a rear view mirror so that the driver can see you.
Scuba Diving
 Get a medical examination and a swim test before learning scuba diving.
 Check the equipment carefully.
 Never dive alone and know local weather conditions.
 Don’t rise too quickly to the surface. A sudden rise can be deadly.

II)-Write the correct form of the verbs from the box into the following sentences. Put T (transitive) or I
(intransitive) after each verb.

Repeated comparatives
I)-Complete the following sentences with the correct form of the words in brackets, using repeated comparatives.
1. My father’s cooking is getting (good) better and better as the years go by.
2. A lot of people are migrating to the city to look for work. The cost of living there is becoming
(high) higher and higher
3. It’s getting (difficult) more and more dificult to find a job these days.
4. The race car was running (fast) faster and faster when it crashed into a tree.
5. With the development of the Internet, (few) fewer and fewer people send greeting cards on special
occasions.
6. The practice of using (many) more and more chemicals to improve crop yields is harmful to people’s
health.

 Repeated comparatives are used to describe things that are increasing or decreasing.
 Formation: short adjective/ adverb + -er and short adjective/ adverb + -er
more and more + long adjective/ adverb
more/fewer and more/fewer + noun
Example: It got darker and darker as we went deeper into the cave.
The athletes are running faster and faster as they are approaching the finishing line.
Things are getting more and more expensive these days.
In Australia, more and more students choose to study Vietnamese at school.

II)-Use the words provided to write the second sentence so that it follows on from the first one, using repeated
comparatives.
1. As she travelled to more places, she started to appreciate her hometown’s beauty. In other words,

Online communication is becoming more and more common. The problem is that fewer and fewer people

Double comparatives
III)-Complete the sentences with the words from the box. One word can be used more than once.

 Double comparatives describe a cause-and-effect process. The first half expresses a cause, and the second half
expresses an effect.
 Formation: creating a parallel structure with two parts having a similar form
1. The + comparative adj/adv + subject + verb, the + comparative adj/adv + subject + verb
Example: The better your education is, the greater your opportunities are.
2. The more/less + (noun) + subject + verb, the more/less + (noun) + subject + verb
Example: The more you give, the more you will receive.
The more money he makes, the less free time he has.

IV)-Complete the sentences with the words from the box. One word can be used more than once.

V)-Rewrite the sentences, using double comparatives.
