Unit 4 | SETEC

Unit 4
Presented by To Moniyuth, Chhinh Vathanak, Dong Siengly,
Ngul Kimleng, Meas Satya

I. Pronunciation
We can give words extra stress when we want to emphasize
them
Most people can hold their breath for a bit longer than a
minute.
Putting extra stress on ‘a bit’ can emphasize that most people are capable of
holding their breath for just over a minute on average.

Sara Campbell can hold her breath for much more than a
minute.
Putting extra stress on ‘much’ emphasizes that Sara Campbell in particular can
hold her breath longer than just a minute. It might not exceed 2 minutes, but it
does have a significant increase over most people which is just a bit over a
minute.
Another example:

We didn’t know you were there.

Putting stress on ‘We’ would imply that the speaker and his group were not
aware of the listener’s presence, and therefore, were oblivious. The listener
might’ve thought that the speaker and his group at the time knew that the
listener was there, but they didn’t.

We didn’t know you were there.

Putting stress on ‘didn’t know’ would emphasize that the speaker and his group
didn’t know the listener was there and were surprised, it is also used to indicate
that the speaker didn’t expect the listener to be there or the listener surprised the
speaker by being there.

We didn’t know you were there.

Unit 4 | SETEC

Putting stress on ‘you’ would imply that the speaker and his group did see other
people present, but didn’t know that the listener was among them.

We didn’t know you were there.

Putting stress on ‘were’ would imply that the speaker didn’t know that the
listener was there at a specific time, but perhaps knew the listener was present at
other times.

We didn’t know you were there.

Putting stress on ‘there’ would imply that the speaker was surprised or shocked
upon discovering the listener’s presence, which emphasizes the fact that the
speaker didn’t expect it at all to know that the listener was there.

Just a quick email to say the whole Sales Team really enjoyed the

experience which we will never forget (even though you said our
shelter was the (3) worst you’ve ever seen)!
Best wishes,

Hi David – a big thank you for helping to make it the most (4)

but cooking over the open fire was the (6) best activity. Sorry for
being the (7) noisiest bunch of girls (8) in the group!
