LET´S WARM UP!
1. Look at the map and answer the questions:
- What do you know about Australia?
Central Australia is all desert! Apart from Antarctica, Australia is the driest continent in
the world and 70% of the territory receives less than 500 milliliters of water a year. ...
To avoid the desert, live near the beach and practice surfing. 91% of the country is
covered by native vegetation.
- Where is it located
Australia is a country in the Oceania macro-unit, located between the Indian Ocean
and the southern Pacific Ocean. It is the sixth largest country in the world with a total
area of 7,686,850 square kilometers, including Lord Howe Island and Macquarie
Island.
2. Brainstorm all the facts you know about Australia.
Australian fauna includes a wide variety of unique animals: 83% mammals, 89%
reptiles, 90% fish and insects, and 93% of amphibians that inhabit the continent
are endemic to the country.1 This high level of endemicity can be attributed to the
isolation of the country, the stability of its tectonic plates and the effect of unusual
patterns of climate change, which also affect the soil and flora, throughout
geological time. A unique feature of Australian fauna is the relative scarcity of
placental mammals, as opposed to the abundance of marsupials, a group of
mammals that complete their embryonic development in a pouch. These
marsupials include macropods, phalageriformes and Dasyuromorphia (such as the
thylacine or Tasmanian wolf), which occupy a good number of the ecological
niches exploited in other parts of the world by placental mammals. Australia has
been the territory of two of the five known extinct species of monotremes and of
numerous poisonous species, such as the platypus, spiders, scorpions, octopuses,
jellyfish, puffer fish and rays. In fact, Australia has more species of poisonous
snakes than innocuous, yet another example of its uniqueness in this regard. The
colonization of Australia by its Aboriginal inhabitants more than 40,000 years ago,
and by Europeans from 1788 onwards, had a strong impact on its fauna. Hunting,
introduction of non-native species and the modification of land uses and the
consequent destruction of habitats led to a large number of extinctions. For
example, Psephotus pulcherrimus or Paradise parrot, Chaeropus ecaudatus or
pig's foot bandicut and platypus (a foal) became extinct. Unsustainable land use
continues to threaten the survival of many species. Faced with this fact, Australian
legislation has responded by creating a multitude of protected areas; however, it
is feared that the application of these measures will be insufficient to curb the
threat to habitats and species.
