INTRODUCTION
Australia is a special place when it comes to plants and
animals. That's because it contains among the largest
proportion of unique species in the world. Eighty percent of the
flora and fauna of Australia live nowhere else in the world. This
is called endemism, where plants and animals are only found
at one location.
378 mammal species,
4,000 fish,
140 snakes,
828 birds,
300 lizards and two crocodiles.
The most well-known Australian animals include kangaroos,
dingoes, koalas, crocodiles, wallabies and Tasmanian devils.

In terms of plants, there are 35,000 plant species, as well as


250,000 fungi and 3,000 lichens.
ANIMALS

Australia is famous for its crocodiles, kangaroos, koalas,


dingoes, wallabies, Tasmanian devils and wombats.
Australia has a unusually large number of marsupials and a
distinct lack of placental mammals.

A marsupial is an animal where young are born


underdeveloped and stay for a time in a pouch, most famously
the kangaroo.

A placental mammal is an animal where young are


developed inside the mother's womb through a placenta.
ANIMAL EXAMPLES
Kangaroo is a plant eating animal , ground
dwelling, mammal that rears its young in a
pouch in its abdomen, has elongated hind legs
with big feet and hops
Koala is a cuddly, stubby, tree dwelling , plant
eating marsupial with gray fur, a big black nose
and large fluffy ears. It has long arms, and legs
with sharp claws , which helps it to cling onto
trees and branches

Tasmanian Devils is the largest surviving


carnivorous marsupial in the world.
Tasmanian devil is a size of small dog. Its
scientific name is Sarcophilus harrissi.

there are 35,000 plant species, as well as 250,000 fungi and


3,000 lichens.

80% of all Australian plant species are endemic.

Dominant vegetation of Australia consists of – Eucalypt,


Hummock Grasses, Acacias, Casuarinas, and Banksias.
PLANTS / VEGETATION EXAMPLES
Eucalyptus - are iconic Australian forest trees. The
Eucalyptus forest type is by far the most common
forest type in Australia covering 101 million hectares,
which is 77% of Australia's total native forest area.

Bankasias There are 173 Banksia species, and all


but one occur naturally only in Australia.
Banksias were named after Sir Joseph Banks, was
the first European to collect specimens of these
plants.

Yellow Wattle - It is an Australian national Flower.


It captures the essence of the bush! The celebration of
the national wattle day is on September 1st.
