Course Description: This course provides an introduction to nursing and roles of the nurse in micro- and macro-
systems; as well as profession-related and patient care concepts. Emphasis is placed on the
knowledge and skills needed to provide safe, quality care for patients across the lifespan along the
wellness-illness continuum, specifically incorporating the concepts of concept-based learning,
professionalism, evidence, safety, technology and informatics, patient education, culture, health
promotion, development, functional ability, elimination, and glucose regulation. The theoretical
foundation for basic assessment, pharmacological principles, and nursing skills is presented, and
the student is given an opportunity to demonstrate these skills in a laboratory setting. An
introduction to the nursing process and evidence-based practice provides the student with a
beginning framework for decision making. Clinical experiences across the lifespan and simulation
experiences will assist students to integrate course concepts. Active learning strategies employed
in this course will promote the development of leadership skills and self-directed lifelong learning.
Note: Enrollment is limited to those accepted into the Vocational Nursing Program through a
lottery process.

in depth examination of concepts that are brought to life using real patient situations that create a
sense of salience, situated cognition and action.  Psycho-motor skill development will be
strengthened through hands on activities.  In the classroom, faculty integrate clinical and

patient care.  Learning in the clinical setting applies course concepts to actual patient care.  These

Offering the course online increases student access in remote locations reducing student burden for commuting long distances. This is the
final course of the LVN program and students must be able to finish this course to enter the workforce as soon as possible. Per College
guidelines for Covid-19, the lecture portion of this course will be offered in a combination of synchronous and asynchronous methods
online.

Faculty will read all discussion post and watch every video that students post or record of themselves or their conversations with
classmates.
There will also be regular instructor-based communication with weekly announcements, lectures, evaluative feedback to discussion posts,
and student videos, and emails/messages to students who fall behind.
There will be regular student-to-student interactions as students must respond to two other students in the discussion forum addressing
the topic in greater depth.
Student-to-student interactions may also include group assignments and projects, and collaborations using tools available in the online
LMS.
In the online course, the faculty may "hold' virtual office hours throughout the week and weekend using synchronous communication
technology.
Students will meet with the instructor at least weekly in a synchronous online classroom. Required dates for meetings will be posted in the
course schedule. During this time, instructor-student and student-student interactions will occur using the tools available in the
synchronous environment, for example, through breakout rooms..
Student will receive prompt feedback from the faculty on homework assignments and homework activities.
Quizzes and exams are electronically graded giving immediate feedback upon completion.
Students can expect feedback and scores posted to the Gradebook tool within 7 days after the submission deadline.

Student learning outcomes for the course focus on fundamentals of nursing care. There is also attention to roles and functions for the
vocational nurse threaded throughout the course as students prepare to enter the workforce. This will be achieved in the distance learning
format through the use of:
A. Threaded discussion forums or equivalent
B. Weekly announcements or equivalent
C. Instructor-prepared materials (examples are video, text, and audio files) in addition to publisher-based materials.
D. Weekly meetings with students using synchronous communication technology.
E. Weekly assignments such as case studies, written assignments, and quizzes will be given.
F. Clinical attendance as required by the external review board (Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians - BVNPT) will be
assigned. To address potential challenges with clinical attendance, students will engage in virtual clinical activities as allowed and approved
by the BVNPT.
The course content will be delivered through Canvas via modular format. The above elements included in the design of the course are
specifically developed to address the Student Learning Outcomes.

6. What will students do in a typical unit of this course to meet the requirements identified in Item 5? (This is for example

In a typical week, the student will:


Log in to the LMS and review weekly plan available in a weekly module. Weekly discussion forum participation will be a required
component of the course. Each week, the instructor will post a discussion forum topic with prompts for students to address

through research from their assigned course materials and/or using the internet.
Read assigned material from text or other resources. ·        
Review instructor-created lecture material (video and/or text) and publisher-created videos on the assigned material. ·        
Take an instructor-prepared or publisher-prepared quiz about the material in the text and/or lecture.·        
Post a discussion forum message answering questions from instructor and demonstrating knowledge gained from review of the
assigned material.
Attend a weekly Zoom and/or synchronous communication technology meeting.

7. Please indicate specific scheduling or proctoring requirements that students will be required to meet that will also be
published in the schedule of classes and course syllabus. Some scheduling parameters will be coordinated with your area
dean or director.

The Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT), the external regulatory agency, may require a certain number of
hours be in online synchronous sessions. Therefore, students may be required to attend synchronous sessions for expanding on lectures,
case studies, and to have any challenging questions answered or concepts explained. Students will be notified of the times of any
synchronous meetings and attendance will be taken following the Nursing Programs Handbook and according to any BVNPT
requirements. Synchronous sessions may be recorded for students who cannot attend or for review. Students may participate in online
proctored quizzes and exams in Canvas/ATI using Proctorio software. Proctored quizzes and exams may be required by the BVNPT and aid
in preparing the student for the NCLEX (Board examination) following graduation. Proctored quiz and exam details will be provided in the
Syllabus with  instructions and technical support as needed for students through faculty assistance and/or assistance from Proctorio or ATI
technical support.

8. Federal and state regulations, as well as local policies, require faculty to use instructional design to ensure that students
have equal access to this course. Specifically, our courses must comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990
(ADA), Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, California Government Code §11135, and Title 5, §55200, College of
the Redwoods’ policies, and any other applicable local, state and federal regulations. Please describe how this DE course
will be designed to comply with the above-named regulations and requirements:

VNC 101 is designed to comply with the regulations ensuring students equal access to this course in the following ways:
    For all course materials (instructor-created, publisher-provided, and/or curated) a text equivalent will be provided for all non-
text elements; videos will include closed-captioning, images will include alt-tags, and audio files will include transcripts.
  Consistent heading styles and hierarchical heading levels will be used for all content. Table cells designated as row and/or column
headers will allow screen readers to read table cells in the correct order.
All course materials will be understandable without the use of color.  Sufficient color contrast will be used between foreground and
background to meet Section 508 standards.
Hyperlinks will use descriptive and meaningful phrases instead of URLs. If URLs are used in addition to descriptive hyperlinks, they
will be formatted so as not to be read by screen readers.  Underlining will only be used to denote active hyperlinks.
An Instructional Material Inventory of each inherently inaccessible learning object will be posted in the course with a plan that has
been reviewed and approved by the DSPS office for accommodating students with disabilities.
