Details of the mentoring system that has been developed for the students for various
purposes and also state the efficacy of such system (5)

An effective mentoring system is prevalent in the institution to help the students at the individual
level.
Professional guidance and laboratory-specific guidance are provided by the faculty assigned for
a particular course.
A career guidance cell exists in the college, facilitating various seminars such as preparation for
competitive examinations like GATE, GRE, CAT, Higher education in foreign countries, etc. The
faculty's guidance in-charge, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities at the departmental level
help the student for his/her all-round development.
Every class is assigned with 3-faculty mentors (counsellors) to counsel the students at an
individual level. Advanced learners are counselled regarding aspects like career planning, type of
value-added courses to be done etc.
Slow learners are guided regarding improvement in examinations, attendance etc., and remedial
classes are conducted for them. Moderate learners are consistently encouraged to improve their
performance.
The number of faculty mentors per class, the number of students per mentor, frequency of mentoring
is described below in table 9.1.1.

Mentoring system to help at an individual level:

In each class, there are 40-50 students and two mentors (counsellors), so that each mentor takes
care of 20-25 students.
One of these counsellors acts as the class teacher of that particular class. The class teacher
takes the responsibility of collecting attendance and marks of the entire class's students and
submits consolidated report to the HOD.
A Counseling Record is maintained for each student for all four years in which student particulars
like name, phone number, blood group, parent particulars and previous academic record etc., are given.
In general, attendance, class test marks, mid marks of each student are observed. Based on these
observations, slow learners, moderate learners and advanced learners are identified. Remedial
classes are conducted for students with backlogs before the supplementary examinations.
Advanced learners are motivated to register for NPTEL courses, certification courses, seminars,
conferences and paper presentations on advanced topics. The first-year students' counselling
records are handed over to the HOD of the concerned department, with the observed remarks at
the end of the first year.
Description of the Mentoring System:
The mentoring is done through academic guidance, professional guidance, laboratory-specific
guidance and all-round development through training & placement, career guidance and
Entrepreneurship guidance as described below.

S. No. Type of Functions

Mentoring
System
1 Academic
guidance Information sharing: Share information on the academic
calendar, lesson plan and e-learning resources to enhance their
knowledge.

Attendance Counseling: Identify students with less

attendance and ensure that they improve their attendance
through continuous counselling.

Support the weak students: Focusing on weak students by

providing them with additional reading materials, model
questions, and solutions and remedial classes.

MOOCs: Motivating the students to register for online

certification courses to strengthen their qualifications for their
career and to achieve higher career paths (like NPTEL,
Coursera, Udacity, etc.)

2 Professional
guidance Skill Enhancement for better employability: Support their
learning and enhance their learning skills through attending
technical workshops, hands-on training programmers and
student symposia.

Registrations in Professional Bodies: To enhance the

knowledge in their respective branch of study and to seek
exposure to the outside world, students are encouraged to
register with various professional bodies like CSI, IETE, IE, and
ISTE.

Industry based training: It is offered for selected students to

enhance their opportunities for employability.

Enhancing the Research Ideas: Encourage students to develop

and discuss their ideas as poster and oral presentations in
different national and international conferences.
Laboratory manual: Providing students with laboratory manuals
3 Laboratory containing the course experiments to help them understand and
Specific
know how about the different laboratory experiments.
Guidance

Experiment demonstration: Faculty demonstrate important

experiments to students

Student Counseling: Irregular students are counselled to attend

laboratory classes regularly and complete pending experiments
during specified extra hours.

4 All-round Encourage and support students towards all-round development

development through training & placement, career guidance, Entrepreneurship
guidance, participation in literary, cultural and sports activities that
help develop leadership qualities, decision-making abilities, team
spirit, socio-psychological awareness, and shape the student into
an intellectually integrated person.

Events organized by Professional Societies:

The college has various student chapters of professional societies like IEEE, EEESA, EleCSA and
CISC for the EEE, ECE&CSE department. The departments conduct various events like seminars,
workshops, guest lectures, industrial visits, industrial training and internships etc., through the
student chapters. Besides, various technical competitions like paper presentations, poster
presentations, model presentations, technical quiz and contraptions etc., are conducted every year
by each department under the umbrella of a technical fest entitled "HORIZON". The students also
participate in the events conducted by external agencies and have been winning prizes.
