A GUIDE FOR KIDS

WHAT IS A
“COMPUTER,”
EXACTLY?
ACCORDING TO MERRIAM-
WEBSTER ONLINE, A
“COMPUTER” IS  A
“PROGRAMMABLE USUALLY
ELECTRONIC DEVICE THAT
CAN STORE, RETRIEVE,
AND PROCESS DATA.”

Types of computers:
- Cell phones
- Tablets
- Calculators
- Laptops
- Desktop PCs
-and many more!
ARE COMPUTERS
LIKE THE HUMAN
BRAIN?
YES! EVERY DAY, OUR BRAINS:
STORE INFORMATION
RETRIEVE INFORMATION, AND
PROCESS INFORMATION

Unlike humans, computers can’t do

anything unless they follow instructions.
These instructions are
called programs or applications.
WHAT'S AN
APP?
“APP” IS SHORT FOR
APPLICATION

Apps are programmed to react when

events occur.
Each and every event is written by
a computer scientist (someone who
studies computers).
WHAT’S THE
DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN A
PROGRAM AND AN
APP?
NO DIFFERENCE.

They are the same, but nowadays we

usually call programs apps because we
see them not only on computers, but on
phones and other mobile
devices. Application, or App for short, are
other names for programs.
WHO WRITES
INSTRUCTIONS
FOR COMPUTERS?
COMPUTER
SCIENTISTS DO!
Computer scientists
are experts who study the science of
computers and machines. They go to
school to learn special
computer programming languages.
HOW MANY
DIFFERENT
PROGRAMMING
LANGUAGES ARE
THERE?
HUNDREDS!

There are hundreds of programming

languages all over the world, but some
are more common than others.

Computer scientists usually specialize

(learn a lot) about one or two languages.
WHY IS LEARNING
TO CODE SO
IMPORTANT?
STEM CAREERS ARE AMONG THE
FASTEST GROWING AND
HIGHEST PAYING FOR YOUNG
ADULTS.

Computer science, or coding, relies on all

of the important STEM subjects. Science,
technology, engineering and math are
great skills to have.
