10 Toxic Filipino Culture

• Skin color as basis of beauty- If you are a girl and has a dark skin then you are
seen as someone who is not pretty. People only find fair skinned girls beautiful.
Everyone can be beautiful whatever skin color you have. There is no such thing as
ugliness.

• Victim blaming- Here in the Philippines, many people tend to blame the victim
instead of the suspect. “Na-rape yan kasi ang ikli ng damit ”, “kung ayaw mo
mabastos edi wag kang magsuot ng maikli”. This is the worst toxic Filipino culture
that instead of helping the victim, they tend to add insult to injury.

• Smart shaming- Being smart and sharing what you know about something to
someone is a crime here, instead of hearing thank you after you shared what you
know, people would say “ikaw na madaming alam” or even say “bida-bida ka”.
Most Filipino mock and shame someone for openly expressing what they know.

• Crab mentality- This is the most common toxic Filipino culture. It is a behavior
that when someone who achieves more success they tend to be pulled down,
ridiculed and shame for having more that you think you don’t have.

• Family comparisons- Most Filipino family have a behavior that tends to compare
each of the family member. “Why is your sister smarter than you, you should be
like her”, “you need to be successful because your cousin is successful.”

• Mañana Habit- or often known as “mamaya na”, doing things in a later time when
you can even do it right away.

• Gossiping- “uy Nakita mob a yung anak ni ano may bago nanamang kasamang
lalaki”, Filipinos are known to gossips a lot, it when someone intended to destroy
a person's reputation by sharing false story or stories that they just made out of
their mouth.

• Sexism- Here in the Philippines, when you are a girl you have to act like as prim
and proper as you can, you have to wear something pink because you’re a girl
while boys should not be seen crying or wearing something pink, they should be
masculine and strong.

• Career degrading- “you are taking fine arts? Then what are you going do with
your life, there is no money in that field”

• Homophobic - If you’re gay, let me tell you how many painful nicknames will be
directed towards you, same goes if you’re a lesbian.
