Activity #2
Search for this short story in Literature books or from the internet. Read the story and enumerate and
explain the literary standards that you find in his story. Explain in 10 sentences each the literary
standards that you found and how it was presented in the story.

Intellectual Value – When Martin’s wife and children died he begged God for death and he stopped
going to church. In this case it demonstrate how true world, life, relationship do really exist. When
they died it really hurts for him because he only wants to have a complete family. No family to care,
no family to eats in table, and most of all no family that put a smile in his face. Don’t expect someone
who always there for you because we only borrowed our lives to God he has the one who knows
when, where, we die. We all pass away leaving our family, friends, love ones that’s why we need to
be strong and be always positive in life because God never give you problems that has no solution.
We need to face the problems, we need to conquer our fear and we need to accept to our selves the
fact that there’s no permanent thing in this world. “The only permanent in this world is change” this is
always my motto in life because i know that all the things in this world will passed away and leave me
no one will stayed forever. I always thinking that i need to be strong if my parents gone because i
know to myself that they’re happy to see me to the right path and achieving my dreams. And also we
need to be thankful to God because he gave us life even its not forever but the memories will remain
forever.
Suggestiveness – He bought himself the New Testament in large print and began to read. Avdeich
meant to read only on holidays, but as he began to read, his soul became so [contented] that he
started reading every day. Sometimes he would be so engrossed in reading that all the kerosene in
the lamp would burn out, and still he could not tear himself away from the book. And so Avdeich
began to read every evening. And the more he read, the more clearly he understood what God
wanted from him, and how he had to live for God and his heart became ever lighter and lighter. It
used to be, formerly, that he would lie down to sleep and moan and groan, constantly thinking about
Kapitoshka, but now he just repeated, over and over, "Glory to Thee, glory to Thee, Lord! Thy will be
done!" And from that time, Avdeich's whole life changed. For this statement we all know that God is
always has a plan, he never give us problems that has no solution he only challenge our strength
looking us from above whether we blame him or asked some guidance and prayed for him for what
happened to our lives. All the sacrifices we face there’s only God will help us and one thing i can
assure is we need to have faith to him, to overcome all the problems/challenges and make it possible
with the helped of our God.
Spiritual Value – “Martin, oh Martin! Look out onto the street tomorrow, I will come”. For what i have
read and understood about spiritual value the spirit within us by bringing our moral values into the
realm of the physical world. It should present moral values necessary focus to reflect and eventually
inspire us to become a better person. Avdiech is waiting for God to visit him but he never knew that
God sent strangers people to his house that represent him. I believe that God is always with us, he
never fails if we need some protections, guidance, and most of all the blessing that he shower to us.
As a child of God i saw the things that he did for me, when i was a grade 10 student my some of my
grade failed because i focuses in playing volleyball and not my studies but God helped me my
parents want me to get the course of education but the average grade in educ. is 85 therefore i can’t
be there because of my grades somehow the DEPED decided that our country need to take up K-12
so God send the DEPED for me to follow my parents want me to be in the future. Therefore God
saved me because he knew that my parents get disappointment of me and that’s the best gift i ever
receive from him. I know that God will never fail us to our dreams he sent some problems but he
helped us to overcome it and when someone needs help don’t ignore them just lend your hand for
help because God sent them to us because he knew that we have the capacity to help them that’s
why don’t ignore someone because of your pride or something.
UNIVERSALITY – “And the more he read, the more he clearly understood what God wanted from
him, and how he had to live for God; and his heart become ever lighter and lighter.” For me this
sentence best describe the universality. For what i have read and understood universality appears to
everyone regardless of culture, race, sex and something that considered significant. The sentence
and the author show us the best character development and as it says it changed his life from the
moment he read the book and now he learn to live for God it is one of the most inspiring moment that
everyone can read. It touches the hearts of every reader and also the mind. It is universal because
everyone can get affected by this even racial and cultural barriers. I can tell that any of us can change
like him whaterever our culture, gender or religion is. Although it appears to be an Universal Spiritual
value story but we can’t deny the fact that it also shows the universality in it, it is a very touching
simple story the line shows intimacy to God and man which can also happens even in every gender.
“His heart become ever lighter and lighter” from this line i can tell that this already got the attention
and the heart of the readers, because regardless of the religion or race or sex we have faith,
everyone has faith and wanted to change their lives too. How can i say it is one of the best character
development? Because he came from an imperfect person to the person he is now. The new and the
more joyful version of him because he lives for God.

Activity #3
The students will be divided into three (3) groups and they will be asked to
read “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant. After reading the story, they will be
assigned to focus on a specific character and make character silhouettes of the one
assigned to them.

1. Make character silhouettes.

“THE NECKLACE”

MATHILDE
2. Record the character or individual traits, thoughts, words, feelings and emotions.

Mathilde Loisel

The protagonist of the story. Mathilde has been blessed with physical beauty but not with the
affluent lifestyle she yearns for, and she feels deeply discontented with her lot in life. Mathilde
changes greatly throughout the course of the story. The story starts with her as being a
materialistic, rather high-maintenance woman who desires parties, jewelry, notoriety and a life
of comfort and ease. She is bitter and resentful that she doesn't have money, and that she
doesn't have servants, a nice house, nice clothes, nice jewelry, or nice parties and friends to
be with. She resents the very food she eats, because it isn't good enough for her. She
constantly longs for better things, at least in terms of money. She is willing to take money from
her husband, that he had been saving for himself, to have one night of happiness at a party
filled with shallow, rich people. Living a life where you’re not happy with what you have will
always bring you down. You’d go out and see people with nice clothing and other accessories
and toys that you wish you had or could afford. Most people nowadays aren’t happy because
of this. In order for them to be happy, they simply thought that they need more money, more
new stuff, or even a perfect life, which is out of the question because nobody perfect. I'm sure
she felt many emotions at once. She had to be angry with herself and feel very stupid for her
careless oversight which cost her so many years of her life and so many hard times. I wonder
if she felt any remorse. A moral person would feel terrible for putting her husband through all
that, but I'm not sure Mathilde has the capacity to do so. Most of all she had to feel envious
rage toward Forrestier. It may not be rational, but Forrestier has always had the lifestyle she
wanted. The fact that Forrestier would pawn a cheap necklace off on her when she knew
Mathilde was looking for something stunning and for it to later cause her so many problems
would likely send Mathilde over the edge.

3. Explain based on the literary standards why they fully understand the character's persona.

Based on the story, The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant.

One literary standard that we found is Universality. Because it appeals to everyone, regardless
of culture, race, gender, and times which are all considered significant. Some of us are not
contented on what we have and that represent Mathilde in the story. After all her wants, it
results to the hardships to pay for the debt that she made and at first she did not think of his
husband’s hardship just to get what she wanted so at the end she repented.

4. Use direct evidence and quotations.

"She dressed plainly because she could not dress well, but she was unhappy as if she had really
fallen from a higher station; since with women there is neither caste nor rank, for beauty, grace and
charm take the place of family and birth."

"'Nothing. Only I have no gown, and, therefore, I can't go to this ball. Give your card to some
colleague whose wife is better equipped than I am.' He was in despair. He resumed:
'Come, let us see, Mathilde. How much would it cost, a suitable gown, which you could use on other
occasions--something very simple?'"
"She bore her part, however, with sudden heroism. That dreadful debt must be paid. She would pay
it. They dismissed their servant; they changed their lodgings; they rented a garret under the roof."

"What would have happened if she had not lost that necklace? Who knows? who knows? How
strange and changeful is life! How small a thing is needed to make or ruin us!"

"'Oh, my poor Mathilde! How you are changed!'

'Yes, I have had a pretty hard life, since I last saw you, and great poverty--and that because of you!'"
