"Black Widow" opens in theatres nationwide on July 9,

Scarlett Johansson in title role
BURBANK, Ca. (MAY 3, 2021) — Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff returns in the latest
installment and the first feature-length film to usher in phase four of the Marvel Cinematic
Universe. “Black Widow” stars Johansson in the title role alongside an all-star cast of Florence
Pugh, Rachel Weisz and David Harbour. The movie opens nationwide in theatres on July 9 as
well as on the streaming service Disney+ for an additional cost.

Set after “Captain America: Civil War” and before “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Black Widow” is
unveils a previously untold backstory of one of the original six Avengers. The film is set to
reveal darker moments of Natasha Romanoff’s history as a Russian spy as old acquaintances and
family conflicts reappear and will uncover the family dynamic created within the Red Room.

“What I really wanted to do was to expose the character and get under her skin. The family
created the dynamic with which that would happen,” said director Cate Shortland, “We see a
different side of the character, because she’s in scenes with people that know her from when she
was a child. She’s not a superhero in those scenes; she’s a daughter or a sister.”

“Black Widow” is directed by Cate Shortland and produced by president of Marvel Studios,
Kevin Feige with Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, and Scarlett Johnsoson serving as
executive producers. The film runtime is 133 minutes long.

“Black Widow” will be Scarlett Johansson’s last portrayal of Natasha Romanoff within the
Marvel Cinematic Universe. Johansson has played Romanoff since Marvel’s “Iron Man 2” in
2010 and has appeared in eight Marvel movies since.

“Black Widow” will be the first feature-length Marvel film to simultaneously premiere on
Disney+ for premium on-demand alongside a worldwide theatre opening. Disney+
subscribers who purchase premium viewing with a one-time $29.99 payment will have
unlimited access to “Black Widow” alongside the in-person audiences on the day of release.

Scarlett JOHANSSON: talent biography
Scarlett Ingrid Johansson was born in
New York City, New York, on November
22, 1984 into a growing family of three
alongside her twin brother, Hunter.
Aside from Hunter, Johansson is the
youngest amongst her three siblings
and the youngest sister in the family.

As a child, Johansson grew a liking to

drama and began her acting career
with a commercial appearance at the
age of seven. After a series of commercial audition rejects, Johannson began
limiting her auditions strictly to film or Broadway. A year later, at age eight,
Johansson made her professional acting debut in off-Broadway’s “Sophistry,”
and her first film debut shortly after in “North.

From 1996 to 2021, Scarlet Johansson has been featured in over 50 films such
as Ghost World, The Other Boleyn Girl, He’s Just Not That Into You, HER, Lucy, or
Lost in Translation, where she starred opposite Bill Murray and for which she

character for seven other blockbuster movies such as The Avengers, Captain
America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame
Most recently, Johansson starred in her own solo prequel movie, Black Widow,

Story ideas
● Feminism:
A feminist story angle is very easy and current to do. The story can focus on
the importance of female representation in films and the film-making
industry. The story can also angle with the “firsts” and “lasts” of the MCU,
discussing how Scarlett Johansson - as the first female Avenger - will be
passing the baton to Florence Pugh in the MCU as the next Black Widow.
Interviewers can be with any female actress or director in the Marvel Studios
catalog.

● Scarlett Johansson’s Last Appearance in the MCU:

After over 10 years in the MCU, the Black Widow will be Scarlett Johansson’s
last appearance as Natasha Romanoff. The story could angle on the last ten
years, the makings-of each film, and the journey she took to reach this solo
film, as her last appearance. Interviews could be with president of Marvel
Studios, Kevin Fiege, Scarlett Johansson, or even, Robert Downey Junior.

● Female Director: Second in MCU:

A story can focus on another female empowerment angle and discuss the
importance of women in filmmaking. Cate Shortland will be only the second
woman to direct a feature length Marvel film. This story can also be used after
the premiere weekend to show opening weekend box office sales and the
success of the movie. Interview will focus on Cate Shortland and can include
Kevin Feige.

● Phase Four Introduction:

This story angle can focus on the introduction of movies into Phase Four of the
Marvel Cinematic Universe. On-demand shows like Falcon and the Winter
Soldier or Wandavision have already premiered and are part of Phase Four
but Black Widow will be the first feature-length film to usher in the importance

5
of Phase Four to the MCU. Interviews can include Kevin Feige, Cate Shortland
and cast.

● Train like a Black Widow:

This story can angle on the stunts and importance of physical training for
action movies. The story can cover behind-the-scenes facts of stunt making
and Scarlett Johansson’s training for her role. It can also include how her
training has developed over the past ten years. Interviews can be with stunt
doubles, stunt coordinators, and Scarlett Johansson.

● COVID and Reshuffled release Dates:

This story can focus on the importance of release dates within the MCU
timeline. Originally, Black Widow was scheduled for release in May of 2020
and would have been the original and official introduction to Phase Four. The
story can angle how COVID has impacted the release dates of future MCU
movies, and how the film is being released both in-person and on-demand.
Interviews can include Kevin Feige, Disney CEO, Bob Chapek, and Black Widow
cast members.
