Rationale Statement Standard #7

Standard Seven: Planning for Instruction:

The teacher plans instruction that supports every student in meeting rigorous learning goals by

drawing upon knowledge of content areas, curriculum, cross-disciplinary skills, and pedagogy,

as well as knowledge of learners and the community context. (NJ Professional Teaching

Standards, 2014, p.9).

Date of Completion: Spring 2021

Course Completed in: EDUC 230 Education Field Experience

This artifact is based on a language arts lesson plan involving reading and writing for first

graders. The lesson plan consists of students picking one of their favorite stories, and being

able to create a quick summary of the important story elements in the book, with illustrations

included. Students should be able to identify key elements in a story, while being able to write

short, but complete sentences as to what happens in their story. This lesson plan relates to

standard 7.ii.4 which states, “The teacher understands the strengths and needs of individual

learners and how to plan instruction that is responsive to these strengths and needs.” (NJ

Professional Teaching Standards, 2014, p.10). This standard is highlighting the importance of

being able to modify lessons for students who may need it. Reading and writing is something

that students may need extra help with, which is why this lesson has modifications to fit

students' needs. For example, if students are not able to fully comprehend elements in a story,

the teacher will assist by going through the student’s chosen story and guiding them through the

story to help identify where those elements are.

When creating my lesson plan 2, I learned that it is important to create a lesson where

students are able to work on more than one learning skill. I learned this as I was somebody who

took child development in highschool and had a lesson plan for the preschool kids that would

come in every other day. I always wanted to make sure they were getting various skills out of

their assignment, the more you practice the better! For this lesson there are various aspects of

learning through storytelling, illustrating, reading and writing comprehension, working on

description words and sentence structure, etc. But it is also important to know that students

could struggle learning how to do some of those skills, as somebody who has had learning

disabilities growing up. Teachers should be able to modify assignments for students who need

extra help with lessons, so in the end all students are able to thrive with their learning!

In the future, I would use this lesson plan to have students work on something that brings

out their inner storyteller, and be able to be creative and work on something they could enjoy,

while practicing reading and writing.
