Tata Motors has service centres across the country at places such as Arunachal Pradesh,
Kutch, Srinagar, Leh, Kanyakumari and the Andamans. Many of these service stations
are in remote locations and are connected to the central location in Mumbai. Tata
Motors links it·s 1,600 customer touchpoints with its centralised data centre in Mumbai
using a combination of VSATs,
high-speed VPNs and at some
places even dial-up connectivity.

Managing diverse intellectual

assets throughout the product
lifecycle is as important as the
product itself and the effective
collaboration of all participants in
the supply chain terms is the key.
Tata Motors UGS PLM
Teamcentre* implementation
would help it to surmount such
business pressures. This solution
would allow the company to unify the product lifecycle and break down the
geographical and technical barriers, which might limit the design efficiency of truly
global enterprises such as Tata Motors. The solution utilizes Visual Area Networking
(VAN) technology from Intel-based SGIplatforms. This accelerates product time-to-
market cycles by making it possible to solve larger, more complex design problems in
collaborative, geographically distributed environments. The solution comprises SGI
Onyx 3900 and Intel Itanium 2 based SGI Altix 3300 servers deployed across 4
locations. It would run UGS PLM Teamcentre, as well as BEA Weblogic, Apache, Java
and SGI IRIX OS ³ based applications. The key business benefits of this solution to
Tata Motors include:
Ԅ Ãeduced Product Development Costs by utilizing the collaborative capabilities of
the application and the versatility of Visual Area Networking technology
Ԅ Migher Innovation by allowing free flow of information between design team
members

{ À

Ԅ Ãeduced Time-to-Market for a new product by fully leveraging the extended
supply chain
Ԅ Improved product quality by making it easier to spot design flaws while
working in a collaborative environment

Tata Motors has plans to use e-commerce platform to market the newly launched Car
Nano. The company is said to start online bookings for Nano from September.
According to the sources, Tata Motors will use autojunction.com, an e-commerce
portal from m-junction Services, to market the people's car. M-junction Services which
is a 50:50 JV between SAIL (Steel Authority of India) and Tata Steel, specializes as a
business process improvement company.
The SAP Solution would enable them to improve business continuity by unifying the
database and functions across the country into one single entity. It would no longer
require any location-specific expertise and thus be much easier to maintain. With the
SAP solution, customization and up gradation costs could be lowered. Ãisks, which
emanate from attrition or change of guard in the company, would also be minimized.
Tata Motors uses Siebel·s CRM solution as a transaction application. It·s like a dealer
management system that allows dealer transaction with customers, and generates
backups on the same system.

As Mero Monda was introducing the very latest mySAP SRM and
mySAP CRM releases, SAP® Consulting was called in to provide
consulting support. SAP Consulting is
part of SAP Customer Services
Network, the single point of access to
comprehensive services from SAP,
including consulting, education,
support, custom development, and
hosting. The company went live with
SAP R3 on February 1, 2001. It uses
modules like production, materials,
finance, marketing, assets, quality sales
and distribution.

The company undertook a complete revamp of its IT infrastructure with a new

architecture, expansion of its network, IT assets and applications. The company first
deployed the Total Virus Defence (TVD) system, which was later upgraded to the
Active Virus Defence (AVD) system around two years ago. Under AVD, Mero Monda
is using Group Shield for Lotus Notes mailing system, Netshield for NT and Window
2000 servers and Virus Scan for end-user desktops. The AVD works under the ePolicy
Orchestrator agent, which is an agent installed on each and every desktop and delivers
the means to control the anti-virus applications.

EÃP helped in improving quality, access and usage of transactional data and suitably
eliminated multiple entries. Besides, there was no need for manual reconciliation any
more and operational processes were improved at
various stages. Order processing was standardised
across all functions. And real-time information on
product cost, profitability analysis, dispatch and
production status was available too.

The IT infrastructure of the company is connected

over three major Local Area Networks (LANs).

{ À

These connect the corporate office in New Delhi with two manufacturing plants
(Gurgaon and Dharuhera), and other zonal and marketing offices. 21 locations are
connected through its Wide Area Network (WAN) set-up. Most of these locations are
connected with the corporate office through VPNs, leased lines, and at few places
through VSAT connectivity. The motorbike major has a total of seven TDM/TDMA
VSATs and two PAMA VSATs. As far as the VPN set-up is concerned, it is still a
closed-user group. For connectivity between its Dharuhera and Gurgaon facilities the
company uses a very fast radio link. The company has installed the PAMA VSATs from
Comsat Max as a backup facility. The Mero Monda network spans 750 nodes across the
country.

Cyberoam·s anti-virus solution scans SMTP, IMAP, POP3 mail traffic and MTTP and
FTP activity as well, leaving no security gaps unattended. As all the Web-based traffic is
scanned for spyware and malware, clean and secure Web surfing has become a reality.
Cyberoam·s identity-based Web filtering ensures employee accountability, which in
turn leads to a reduction in unproductive surfing. The IT department has created
groups and assigned Internet access rights based on their business profile in MMML.
Cyberoam·s MTTP client is used to authenticate the user. As the Web filtering rules are
implemented on the user·s identity and not just on the IP address, IP spoofing has been
curbed.

The company had in place an integrated system where data could be tracked and
monitored on a real time basis. So, one of the first steps the company took was to go in
for an ERP system (SAP) that would help it integrate disparate islands of information.

When Bajaj Auto was looking out for ways to connect its entire supply chain³right
from its manufacturing plants, vehicle dealers and the suppliers at the back-end³it
found a perfect solution in the form of mySAP Enterprise Portal. The solution from
SAP was chosen as the company already had an EÃP system and being Web-based
could improve dealer and supplier interaction with the company.

Bajaj Auto·s new IT infrastructure is supported by IBM·s state-of-the-art pSeries &

xSeries eServers, Serial Storage Architecture and Tivoli Enterprise Framework
Management tools.

To enable seamless communication across

the country, the above information system
is supported by wide area network
covering its three plants, 14 regional offices
and 12 warehouses over Tata Internet
Services· VPN based on fibre optics, V-
Sats and microwave links.
Bajaj Auto recognises the crucial role of
both man and machine in achieving
international standards of quality and
productivity. The new IT investments will contribute substantially towards
transforming the company into a world-class organisation.
