Rational Statement -Standard #6 Assessment

Standard 6: Assessment
The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in
their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the teacher’s and learner’s
decision making. ( professional Development in New Jersey, 2014, p.8)

Rational Statement:
This artifact is a science based lesson plan on the diversity of life in different
habitats. This artifact relates back to standard 6.i6 “The teacher models and structures
processes that guide learners in examining their own thinking and learning as well as
the performance of others.” (Professional Development in New Jersey, 2014,p.8) Standard
6.i6 focuses on the teacher being able to give clear instructions and proper structures
processes to help learners expand their own thinking and be able to share and collect
information from each other. In the lesson plan I focused on aligning instruction and
assessment with the learning goals of the lesson.
As a future teacher creating this lesson plan was a challenge. I had a hard time
connecting the lesson with a specific standard. I first challenged myself to think of a
specific theme that was appropriate for a 2nd grade class then looked up the Science
NJSLS to make sure that the theme I thought of could be connected to one of the revised
Standards. In doing this I learned that there are a lot of different ways to be able to

connect the standards and the Lesson or activity you were thinking about, and that you
can do a lot of different things as long as you have the creativity to teach a different way.
In the future, I can refer back to this lesson plan and reflect on the fact that the
struggle I have now completing this assignment is practice that will help me get better
in creating my own lesson plans for my own students. That the hard work done now is
just a stepping stone for success.
