Introduction

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is more than a decade old, fascinating cricket
league organized by Board of Control for Cricket in India and played out in India
from 2008 onwards. The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a cash-oriented league.
From 2008, it has made its impact globally and is one of the most talked cricketing
leagues around the cricketing world. The officers of BCCI also believed the league
as one of the best platforms to find the right talent for the national team of India.
My research paper will put light on the negative impacts of this seasoned
competition, i would like to know how this is hampering the beauty of the game,
how it is creating a monopolistic market spectrum and how the players are getting
involved in this. The IPL has developed into the foremost lucrative and
entertaining outlet for the sport of cricket. Matches generally begin in late
afternoon or evening to maximize the tv audience for worldwide
broadcasts. Initially, league matches were played on a home-and-away
basis between all teams, but, with the planned expansion to 10 clubs
(divided into two groups of five) in 2011, that format changed in order that
matches between some teams would be limited to one encounter. the
highest four teams contest three play-off matches, with one losing team
being given a second chance to achieve the ultimate, a wrinkle aimed
toward maximizing potential television revenue. The play-off portion of the
tournament involves the four teams that finished at the highest of the tables
in a very series of knockout games that enables one team that lost its first-
round game a second chance to advance to the ultimate match.
Background

In comparison to a one-day cricket international match, such as the Cricket World Cup, the IPL's strategy
canvas (above) portrays its unique value proposition to cricket audiences. While other cricket leagues
adopted the same traditional rationale as the Cricket World Cup, the IPL's value curve deviates from the
Cricket World Cup's by emphasizing the game's fun and thrill. When compared to alternatives such as
the EPL and Bollywood drama, the IPL becomes even more convincing by providing unparalleled value.

The IPL surpassed established demand as a result of establishing an unparalleled cricket league. It
converted non-customers from all three formats into cricket fans.

My research aims to bring out the negative impacts of the Indian premier league on global cricket,
people always have this view that IPL is doing world of good, but in reality, it is doing much more
damage to world cricket. Indian cricket itself is getting benefitted from the constructive and lucrative
league where best of the best from the world comes to play. A detailed study on branding of IPL showed
that it is the brainchild of BCCI and mostly acts as the money machine (Arora, 2016, pp.3)
Research questions

Being a great cricket enthusiast I always have been a great fan of the IPL from my early childhood , but
when I started to understand things I got to know IPL is seen as an revenue generation tool for BCCI and
actors, businessmen of India, they are the ones who actually gets all the money here by owning the
respective teams. Now it does makes us to think like IPL is all about money and sometimes it becomes
an open truth as well.

In my first question I wanted to know what people think of IPL, it was my own interest to know if they
consider it as a money game or an actual game of cricket, this question was targeted to the mass people
who gave their opinion about it.

In my second question I asked a slightly technical question which involved the word MONOPOLY which
means total market share belongs to a one single person or company in this case my question was is IPL
making India the only power in world cricket to exercise the monopoly.?

In my third question I asked a very sensitive and also a burning topic where I asked the people if they
think the Indian premier league is making players give priority to money rather than national duty? Here
they answered spontaneously over 5 options that were presented by me.

In my fourth question I put light upon the gentlemen’s format of cricket, test cricket itself, my target was
to know what people think about the existence of this format due to the sudden rise of T20 leagues
most specifically IPL.

In my fifth question I thought of something different ,as match fixing is always a burning topic when IPL
is around I tried to ask the question to the mass people in a different manner through a situational
question , I gave reference to the captain of Rajasthan royals, Sanju Sampson who didn’t took a run
when it was 2 needed , it definitely raised the eye brows for a fixed match scenario ,however situational
demand or a brain fade can not be denied as well .

In my sixth question I involved ICC (international cricket council) who plays a vital role in terms of
discipline and scheduling in the cricket world , my question was does ICC has to make their schedule
keeping the IPL time slot in mind is that hampering the other cricketing nations from playing any kind of
series , According to you whose fault is this ? my main purpose was to find whom does the people hold
accountable for this kind of mismanagement .

In my penultimate question I asked more of a direct question where I wanted to know if the Indian
premier league is hampering the globalization of the game.

In my last question I asked an open-ended question where I asked What can be a viable and also
sustainable solution in order to stop the bad effects of Indian premier league on the world cricketing
stage? Write in brief.
Hypothesis

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a cash rich cricket league from the Board of control for cricket in India
(BCCI). The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a professional Twenty20 cricket league, contested among eight
teams based out of eight different Indian cities the league was founded by the Board of Control for
Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2007. It usually starts between March and May of every year and has an
exclusive window in the ICC Future Tours Programme .For my research I expect to find the views and
opinions of the people about the negative impacts of Indian premier league (IPL) on the global cricket
Since it is hampering the beauty of the game, increased suspicion of match fixing and starting a
monopoly in the globalization of the game, I think most of the people will attribute to the fact of more
entertainment and less cricket in IPL as a major concern to the cricketing nations, I think in their last
thought they will put light to the fact of increasing number of suspected match fixing issues and player’s
national commitment

Research methodology

In order to confirm and prove my hypothesis provided above, I laid out a mapped plan
for my actual research. It includes taking vocal interviews of renowned experts on this
matter, sports journalists who have observed the change in the cricketing arena due to
the factors of my hypothesis, Finally, it includes searching the reference materials
related to this subject matter like journal articles, periodicals, books, magazines,
encyclopedias etc.
I decided to take interviews from a sports expert on this matter and an experienced
sports journalist of Bangladesh Saif rahman who has also worked for Bangla tigers in
Abu Dhabi T10 league. He has proper knowledge regarding this and I hoped to learn
their feedback on this matter.
From my interview with Mr. Saif I came to know players now wait and thrive for a IPL contract, it has
become an absolute must for them to try in the IPL for the money, fame and glory, he also mentioned
how and why ICC has been manipulated by the IPL governing body members.

For my primary research, I also conducted a survey of a representative sampling of cricket enthusiasts
both inside and outside Bangladesh and I considered the sample of 40 Knowledgeable people with
almost equal number of male and female personals. I designed a questionnaire accordingly with
different types of questions so as to get a range of useful data which helped me to answer my research
questions.

As for my secondary research, I looked up resources online and went through journal articles,
periodicals, book sections, newspaper articles etc. on the relevant subject matter.
Data presentation and analysis

All the data presentation and analysis will be done in the same order as the questions were

The research managed to make me reach the almost the same results that I expected. Although in some
cases it produced very unexpected responses from the respondents. The survey that I conducted led me
to responses that suggest that although some are unsure of the effects.

1.  Do you believe that the Indian premier league is more about money rather than the
game itself?
The options of these questions were
 Agree
 Strongly agree
 Neutral
 Disagree
 Strongly disagree

Figure – Pie chart showing what people think about IPL and money relates to it

40.4 % Agrees with the fact that the Indian premier league is more about money rather than the
game itself 27.7 % stayed neutral about their opinion on this notion 19.1 % people strongly
agree with the notion Very few people opted to go against the given scenario It suggests that
people have a clear understanding of cricket and what the Indian premier league is doing with
its money so we can say that people do believe the IPL is all about money rather than the game
itself.
2. Do you think the Indian premier league is making India the only power in world cricket to
monopolize the market?
 Yes, I think India has a monopoly over the market due to the Indian premier league
 No, I don't think India has a monopoly over the market due to the Indian premier league
 Partially, but other premier leagues are also doing good
 The market is well divided among all the franchise leagues all over the world

Figure – Pie chart showing opinion about India’s monopoly over the market

76.6 % of people feel that the Indian premier league is making India the only power in
world cricket to exercise a monopoly over the market. However, 19.1% of people feel
that the other franchise leagues are doing well, too. It indicates that the lion share of the
people thinks according to my hypothesis which is India now exercise a monopoly over
the cricketing market.

3. Do you think the Indian premier league is making players give priority to money
rather than national duty?
 yes, all the players are longing for the Indian premier league due to the money
 No, Players still want to play for the country first, then the Indian premier league
 Some of them are giving priority to the Indian premier league over national
duties, while the rest is going for Indian premier league money
Figure – Pie chart showing the priority of players towards IPL

44.7 % of the people think there are a handful number of players who are opting to play
the Indian premier league, whereas the rest still gives priority to the national duty
first 38.3 % feels that all the players are hankering towards the money tree of the Indian
premier league  This indicates people feel that there is a good chunk number of players
who are willing to give up national duty over the Indian premier league contract. This
matches my hypothesis with some partial contradictions.

4. Do you think the T20 version of the Indian premier league is making test cricket
more vulnerable to extinction?
 Hold an affirmative view to the opinion
 Hold an opposing view on the opinion
 Believes that at the end of the day, it is the same game but different format
 Test cricket is becoming vulnerable due to ICC's indifferent attitude towards the
format.

Figure – Pie chart showing the vulnerability of test cricket due to IPL
29.8 % felt it is ICC for whom TEST cricket is losing its glamour
27.7% feels Indian premier league is making the aristocratic version of the game fade
away 27.7 feels it cricket that is being played at the end of the day. The format doesn’t
matter that much This gives us the impression that the perception varies from person to
person. Then again, ICC is controlled by BCCI personnel, and BCCI organizes the
Indian premier league. (ICC stands for international cricket council, BCCI (Board of
cricket control India) Thus it matches my hypothesis.

Q5.  According to your perception, do you believe in the match between Rajasthan Royals and
Punjab kings Sanju Sampson’s denial of a run in the last over (Indian premier
league 2021) where it was only five needed raises eyebrows about a fixed match scenario that
is always buzzing during the Indian premier league?

 I strongly feel that he didn't make the run because he was match-fixing
 I strongly feel that he played the situation and he was not fixing the match
 It was a brain fade moment

Figure – Pie chart showing fixing suspicions through a situation

36.2% feels that he was playing a scripted scenario which is, in other words fixing
the match 31.9% feels that he was playing the situation of the game.
31.9 % feels that it was a brain fade More than half of the respondents feel Sanju
Sampson played the game scenario as he was the set batsman. It is pretty standard
to have a brain fade in this kind of pressure situation; however, there are still people
who smell fixing in the air. This doesn’t match my hypothesis fully.
Q6.  ICC has to make their schedule keeping the IPL time slot in mind is that hampering the
other cricketing nations from playing any kind of series, according to you whose fault is this?

 Indian premier league governing body

 International Cricket Council
 Respective cricket boards
 Everyone is equally involved

Figure – Pie chart shows the accusations of the people’s opinion

40.4% feels ICC is involved .40.4 % again feels everyone is equally involved

14.9% believes that the Indian premier league governing body is involved With a
handful of Indian premier league governing body members who are also the executive
board members of ICC, this proves my hypothesis that some way or the other Indian
premier league is hampering other international fixtures (reference can be given from
question number 4).

Q7 Do you think the Indian premier league is hampering the globalization of the game?
1. Agree
2. Strongly agree
3. Neutral
4. Disagree
5. Strongly disagree
Figure – Pie chart showing the number of people who thinks IPL is hindering the globalization of
the game

A percentage total of 44.7 % agrees that the Indian premier league is hampering the globalization of the
game. 36.2 % remain neutral Thus this matches my hypothesis.

Q7. This question was an open ended one.

What can be a viable and also sustainable solution in order to stop the bad effects of the Indian premier
league on the world cricketing stage? Write in brief

According to the responses of this open-ended question I have jolt it down to 4 viable opinions that the
respondents had in the forms of options

1. IPL should be held once in every 2 years

2. Wages of international players should be increased in order to discourage playing in the IPL

3. Fixing issues should be handled very strictly

4. ICC should be flexible with its FTP schedules and refraining from becoming IPL centric

 *FTP = Future tour plan

* All the opinions support my hypothesis that IPL is putting an adverse effect on the cricket
playing nations of the world
Summary of the research findings

The Indian premier league is a lucrative one no doubt about it but my research has found out the
mentioned points:

N.B- All the findings are from the primary, secondary and the interview that I have conducted.

1. People believe it is all about money.

2. BCCI has made IPL a revenue generating brain child.
3. Match fixing is a open secret now for the mass people.
4. National duties are becoming second priority for the players.
5. People lost faith un ICC and their works.
6. People feel there should be given more emphasis on the salary of the cricketers.
7. IPL should be held once in every 2 years.
8. FTP schedules should not care about IPL schedule

Conclusion
In conclusion we can say that though IPL is doing good to the Indian cricket but it is hugely impacting the
global cricketing arena ,the cross culture premier league is making bonds stronger and making
players more comfortable playing in different conditions ,but if the game remained on field that
would have been perfect , here in this scenario the main game occurs outside the field where the
top leaders of world cricket thinks and hankers only after money ,corruption , fixing are now a
common phenomenon  We cannot deny the good side, but at the outset it threatens lot of things
within the players and for the cricket too.
