William Clinton

Childhood
● Bill Clinton was born William Jefferson Blythe III in Hope, Arkansas, to Virginia Dell
(Cassidy) and William Jefferson Blythe, Jr., a traveling salesman.
● Three months before William’s birth, his father tragically died in a car crash
● While his mother was away studying nursing to find financial stability to support both
herself and her son, William was raised by his grandparents.
● In 1950, William’s mother married Roger Clinton, whose surname young Bill took.
● In 1956, William’s half brother Roger Clinton was born.

Education
● Always interested in politics and working to help people, Clinton majored
in International Affairs at Georgetown University. Clinton graduated from
Yale Law School in 1973. He then taught law in Arkansas, and ran for
political office.
● He graduated in 1968 and won a Rhodes Scholarship, which he used to study
government at Oxford University.
● Clinton graduated from Yale Law School in 1973. He then taught law in
Arkansas, and ran for political office.
Education II
● As a delegate to Boys Nation while in high school, he met President John
Kennedy in the White House Rose Garden. The encounter led him to enter a
life of public service
● He was defeated in his campaign for Congress in Arkansas’s Third District
in 1974. The next year he married Hillary Rodham, a graduate of Wellesley
College and Yale Law School.
● In 1980, Chelsea, their only child, was born.
Major Accomplishments
● The first Democratic president since Franklin D.
Roosevelt to win a second term
● Proposed the first balanced budget in decades and
achieved a budget surplus.
● He could point to:
○ The lowest unemployment rate in modern times
○ The lowest inflation in 30 years
○ The highest home ownership in the country’s history
○ Dropping crime rates in many places
○ Reduced welfare rolls
● Left the presidency with an approval rating of 65%,
higher even than former President Ronald Reagan.
● He also accepted the Advocate for Change Award, along
with his daughter Chelsea Clinton onstage during the 24th
Annual GLAAD Media Awards.
● He got the Presidential Medal of Distinction Certificate
by Shimon Peres (Former President of Israel).
Failures
● In 1998, as a result of issues surrounding personal indiscretions with a
young woman White House intern, Clinton was the second U.S. president to
be impeached by the House of Representatives
● Became the first sitting U.S. president to be sued. Paula Jones sued him
after claiming he sexually harassed her six years previously. [1997]
● No LGBTQ equality: Defense of Marriage Act
● Expanded the war on drugs
● Expanded the death penalty
● Bombed Sudanese pharmaceutical plant
● Knew about coming Rwandan genocide
