MIDTERM ‒ PRACTICAL ASSESSMENT NO. 3

Assessment Title: Constructing a line of position by the sun’s observation using the sight reduction formulae and
scientific calculator.

Scenario: At about LZT 0940H on February 5, 2011, the sun’s observed altitude was 56°18.4’.

Construct the line of position produced by the altitude observation of the sun from an observer at DR
18°22.3’ S, 093°14.5’ E.

Solve for the following:

1. The UT of the observation.

2. The GHA of the sun at sight.
3. The LHA of the sun at sight using the known ship’s longitude.
4. The declination of the sun at sight.
5. The computed altitude of the sun at sight using the sight reduction formula
6. The intercept
7. The computed true azimuth
8. The ship’s assumed latitude
9. The ship’s assumed longitude
10. The assumed LHA of the sun

Construct the line of position produced by altitude observation of the sun.

A. Construct and/or locate properly then annotate the following using correct plotting symbols on the
UPS:
11. Complete latitude labels on UPS
12. Complete longitude labels on UPS
13. Correct construction of the longitude lines located east and west of the mid-longitude
14. Correct mid-latitude line drawn on the longitude scale
15. Assumed position
16. Sun’s azimuth line
17. Sun
18. Computed position
19. Sun’s line of position (1 point)
20. Cleanliness of your chart work and clarity of your plot shall earn you a point to your final score
earned.
