Lesson Facilitation Reflection

Students’ Strengths

1. What did each student do or say that was mathematically smart? Respond for each student using:
I think it was smart when (name of student) did/said (evidence from structured observation notes), and I
think this was smart because (how does this strength support student learning?).
I think it was smart when one of the students rephrased frequency in their own words because it
helped the class understand it in a real-world scenario and prepare them for the lesson.
I think it was smart when one of the students noticed the relationship between the frequency
total and total numbers in the data set because it taught them a new way to make sure that they hadn’t
missed any data.
I think it was smart when one of the students was able to notice the trends and connections
between the data and the frequency tables because it showed their true understanding of the material.
What do students understand? What are students on their way to understanding? What is your
evidence from your observations to support your statement? Respond using: I think (name of student)
understands OR is on the way to understanding (math concept or skill), because I heard/saw (evidence from
observation). Then comment further, as appropriate.
I think one of the students understands that frequency tables can be used in any statistical
question because they began to think of real-world scenarios where they could make frequency tables.
I think one of the students understands that data can be grouped into interval sizes of their
choosing.
I think that one of the students understands how to analyze data from a frequency table because
he had a frequency table that showed student test scores and was able to connect that the students
needed more time to study because majority of the scores were low.

2. What are the norms for participation that students are enacting? What are they saying and
doing as math learners that supports their participation and learning? Respond using: I think the
students understand that being a math learner requires (participation norm), and I think this because
(evidence from observation). Then comment further, as appropriate.
I think the students understand that being a math learner requires practice, because
they weren’t able to remember the steps to creating a frequency table until they had done it
themselves.
I think the students understand that being a math learner requires teamwork, because
they were much more productive and creative when teaching and helping each other.
I think the students understand that being a math learner requires making connections
to past learning, because the students were able to understand concepts faster when they could
recall what we had learned in past units.
3. What instructional moves did you make that had good success? (Review the Teacher Talk
Moves Handout)
Restate, Reasoning, and Add-On presented great outcomes for the students’ learning. They
participated and were much more engaged in the lesson than in a traditional lecture teaching
method.
4. What instructional moves might you do differently?
I might limit the amount of add-on I allowed between transitions because it led to a lot of side
conversations and off-task behaviors. Students were very frequently shouting out their thoughts
rather than respectfully waiting to be called on.

5. What are you taking away from this experience? (e.g. What have you learned? What are you left
thinking about, wondering, asking? What might you do differently in your classroom as a
result?)
I am taking away a lot more confidence from this experience. The students
were very responsive to the teacher moves that I engaged in and were eager to
participate and be heard. I worried that the students would get off task, and at times
they did, but I was able to pull them back to the lesson with ease. I learned how
impactful it is to have the students run the discussion. I didn’t expect them to be so
entertain with the subject if they had control of it. With this particular lesson, the
students caught on quickly and so there wasn’t much room to present them with
productive struggle. However, I would definitely like to implement that it future
lessons.
