3-Minute Lesson Plan

Objective: Classmates will successfully produce short rhythmic improvisations.

Procedure:
1. With metronome clicking, teacher plays a basic 1-measure rhythm on a single
pitch while students listen, then echo it back (muted) [repeat 1-2x]
2. Students listen to (and look at on slideshow) a 1-measure rhythm with
metronome and play an improvised response rhythm in response (muted) [repeat
1x]
a. Students are not confined to the rhythms/level of rhythmic complexity
played by the teacher
3. (Unmuted) students listen to four clicks, then play a 1-measure improvisation on
concert Bb, D, or F
a. Can repeat or embellish one from before

Assessment (Informal)
1. As the students play while unmuted, teacher takes note of who is playing and if
anyone is struggling with the exercise
