1. What is affirmative action? Does affirmative action benefit the society as a whole and
does India still need affirmative action?
2. “In order to remove the existing disabilities of certain sections of our society caused by
hostile discrimination in the past, the Constitution sanctions affirmative action in no
uncertain terms. The wisdom of the Constitution is however, sometimes questioned and
opposition, even in violent form, is expressed to the affirmative action policy in the
name of equality, merit, efficiency, etc.”
In the light of above statement elucidate the jurisprudential philosophy and significance
of policy of affirmative action in India.
3. On 12th December 1935, Ambedkar was asked by the Jat-Pat Todak Mandal, a Hindu
reformist group, to address their annual conference and speak about the ill-effects of
caste in Hindu society. However, when Ambedkar sent his speech, titled „Annihilation
of Caste‟, to the group, they found some of the contents to be too controversial.
Ambedkar was asked to change the speech. In reply, he asked to withdraw his
invitation. Discuss the reasons for the group‟s reaction elaborating on the relevance of
Annihilation of Caste to affirmative action.
4. Compare the affirmative action model of India and USA. The basis of affirmative
action policy in India and U.S. has historically been caste and race instead of economic
criteria. Discuss reasons for the same.
