DEFINITION

 Critical incident technique is used for


evaluating the performance of the
students. The evaluator records specific
behaviour i.e. Good or bad, effective or
ineffective and desired or undesired
behaviour. Both are to be recorded by the
observer.
TWO ASPECTS ARE:-
USES OF CIT

 The actual behavior must be reported


rather than general features /
characteristics.
 The behavior must be actually observed
by the reporter.
 All relevant factors in the incident must
be given.

 The observer must make a definite
judgment about the behaviour that is
consider to be critical.
 A collection of critical incidents is made
on the basis of day to day observation of
nurses in providing nursing care as soon
as possible after they occur.
METHOD’S OF CIT
DETERMINE AND REVIEW THE INCIDENT:-
It includes collecting all the information
related with the incident, which involves
collecting the details of the incident from
the participant.
IDENTIFY ISSUES:- After gathering all the
information, need to identify which issues
are faced by person in a particular
incident.

DETERMINE WAYS TO RESOLVE ISSUES:-
It includes finding out possible solutions
and how to resolve an issues based on
various possible solutions.
EVALUATION OF RESOLUTION:-
Which will determine if the solution that
was selected will solve the root cause of
the situation and will cause no futher
problems.
CRITICAL INCIDENT RECORD FORM
 C.I.R.F has a list of clinical experience
that the students are expected to have.
 Each clinical experience has a list of
critical incidents which are effective, +ve
behaviour contributing to the good
nursing care.
 It also has a list of critical incidents
which are ineffective, the negative
behaviour which interfere with good
nursing care.

 The space is provided for the instructors to
record date, the item no of clinical experience
about what happened.
 Critical incident that are positive to be
encouraged and negative to improved.
 Summary of behaviour is to be improved at
the end.
 Space is also provided for given general
comments by the evaluator indicating
strength and weakness and sign of evaluator
and teacher who is evaluated.

 Fail to device or suggest new technique for the welfare of patient.

ADVANTAGES
 Data is collected from the respondent’s
perspective and in his or her own words.
 Does not force the respondents into any
given framework.
 Identifies even rare events that might be
missed by other methods .
 Useful when problem occur but cause
and severity are not known.

 Inexpensive and provide rich information.
 Can be applied using questionnaires or
interviews.
 Easy to understand.
 In certain agencies this method is used
for performance appraisal.
 They provide cumulative record of
growth and development.
DISADVANTAGES
 The critical incident technique will rely on
events being remembered by the users and
will also requires the accurate and truthful
reporting of them.
 Respondents may not be familiar to or willing
to take the time to tell a complete story when
describing a critical incident.
 Since this method is based on incidents it
does not say anything about the everyday
situation so it is not very representative.

 They are time consuming to write.
 Critical incident records may fail to serve
to purpose, if they are not recorded
accurately.
 Difficult to maintain objectivity while
recording the incident.
