INTRODUCTION

• Computer – assisted instruction improves instruction for students

with disabilities because students receive immediate feedback and
do not continue to practice the wrong skills. Computer capture the
students attention because the programme are interactive and
engage the students spirit of competitive to increase their score.
DEFINITION

• Computer – assisted instruction (CAI) is an interactive

instructional technique where by the computer is used to
present the instructional material and monitor the learning
that take place.
CONT….

• Computer assisted instruction-when the computer is used

as an aid to teaching method of instruction is called
computer assisted instruction.” - K.P.Neeraja
TYPES OF COMPUTER ASSISTED INSTRUCTION:
DRILL AND PRACTICE:

• Drill practice provide

opportunities for students
to repeatedly practice the
skills that have previously
been presented and that
practice is necessary for
mastery.
TUTORIAL:

• Tutorial activity includes both the

presentation of information and
its extension into different forms
of work, including drill and
practice, games and simulation.
LOGO
• Logo is a simple programming
language, which can be taught to
children. The program provides
instructions, which can be used to
produce picture or make a little
mechanical robot. The children who
learn logo make a their own
programs to draw flowers and faces
or generate designs in the screen.
LOGO EXAMPLE

• Children learn to logo make

up their own programmes to
draw flowers or faces or
generate designs on the
screen.
GAME

• Game software often creates a

contest to achieve the highest
score and either beat others or
beat the computer
SIMULATION:

Simulation software can provide

and approximation of reality that
does not require the expense of
real life or its risk. Video pictures,
graphics can be incorporated in
the design of software.
DISCOVERY:

• Discovery approach provides a

large data base of information
specific to a course or content
area and challenges the learner
to analyse, compare, infer and
evaluate based on their
exploration of the data.
PROBLEM- SOLVING

• This approach helps children

develop specific problem solving
skills and strategies. The real life
situations will be presented to
assist in problem solving and
decision making skills in a safe
environment
CONTROLLED LEARNING

• It indicates both drill and

practice. Drill & practice is
supplementary to the regular
curriculum taught by the
classroom teacher.
ADVANTAGES OF COMPUTER ASSISTED INSTRUCTION

One-to-one interaction
Great motivator
Freedom to experiment with different options
Instantaneous response/immediate feedback to the answers
elicited
Self pacing - allow students to proceed at their own pace
Helps teacher can devote more time to individual students
CONT…
 Privacy helps the shy and slow learner to learns
 Individual attention learn more and more rapidly
 Multimedia helps to understand difficult concepts through
multi-sensory approach
 Self-directed learning – students can decide when, where,
and what to learn
LIMITATIONS OF COMPUTER – ASSISTED INSTRUCTION

May feel overwhelmed by the information and resources available

Over use of multimedia may divert the attention from the content
Learning becomes too mechanical
Computer fails to appreciate the emotion of the students.
Inadequate training of teachers and inadequacy of instructional
materials.
Non availability of good computer assisted instruction packages
 Lack of infrastructure
COMPUTER ASSISTED LEARNING
INTRODUCTION

Computer assisted learning and teaching are great help to teachers

as well as to students as students do not bored in classroom
teachings with permeable slides and teaching , which earlier was
not used because of conventional classroom teaching.

CONT….

• Computer assisted learning or computer aided learning is

defined as learning through computers with subject wise
learning packages/materials"
Mifflin
DEFFINITION

Computer assisted learning is to convey a vast amount of

information in a very short period of time .It is powerful of
reinforcing concepts and topics first introduced to students
through textbook and discussion in the classroom.
Computer assessed learning enables in a powerful way to
comprehend complex concepts.
PROF. HUSSEIN ASHRAM
PURPOSE OF COMPUTER ASSISTED LEARNING

To increase the teaching productivity.

To develop the learning capacity of students.
To improves the effectiveness of instructors.
 It supports educational and organisational goals.
 Improved training cost.
 Decreased material cost.
CONT….

 It supports the learner’s development.

 Real time access.
 Improved retention.
 Personalized learning.
 Nurtures a learning organization and community.
COMPUTER-ASSISTED LEARNING (CAL) FOR NURSING
EDUCATION

CAL has been claimed to improve knowledge retention and
achievement scores, enhance clinical judgment skills and reduce
required instruction time; performing as well (if not better) when
compared to other more traditional education techniques.
The advantages of the utilization of CAL in nursing education can be
made clear by consideration of adult education theory and curriculum
design, as well as the particular learning needs of nurses themselves.
CONT….

Research and development into a theoretical framework for CAL

design and implementation has allowed the identification of
beneficial aspects of CAL resources. Although the cost of commercial
software may be prohibitive to some institutions, possibilities exist
for educators to create their own CAL packages relatively simply.

USES OF COMPUTER IN NURSING:

• To maintain the nursing records of the patient.

• To record admission of the patient.
• To record discharge of the patient.
• To maintain intake and output chart of the patient.
• To keeping inventory records.
• Storage of patient information for a long period of time.
CONT….

• To evaluate the patient problem.

• To record all data for future references.
• To maintain dietary plans of the patients.
ADVANTAGES OF COMPUTER ASSISTED
LEARNING

Each student receives instruction at his own pace.

Each student responds continuously as he receives instruction.
All units learning are broken down into sub units and small elements of
learning.
Students can access the computer at any place.
Students can learn through their own ways and style i.e., Through
examples through case studies or through problems.
CONT….

Students can test their learning at any time of progress.

The computer is consistent, relevant and approving of every
student.
The program author can update a computer lesson as anew
knowledge is identified
DISADVANTAGES OF COMPUTER ASSISTED
LEARNING

Cost factors
 content control.
Lack of formal communication among user.
As students cannot interact with the computers in a human
language, the mechanical response by punching keys can become
dull and frustrating
CONT….

With excessive use of CAL, artistic competence of students takes a

back seat.
It produces more mental and physical stress as compared to other
methods of teaching. It does not help in developing language
proficiency which depends more on direct experience with the
reality.
