MECH 2040 Assignment 3 Due on Canvas on Mar, 5, 2021

Question 1 (25 pts)

A flexible connection consisting of rubber pads (thickness t=9 mm) bonded to steel plates is shown
in the figure. The pads are 160 mm long and 80mm wide.
(a) Find the average shear strain 𝛾𝑎𝑣𝑒𝑟 in the rubber if the force P=16 kN and the shear modulus
for the rubber is G=1250 kPa.
(b) Find the relative horizontal displacement 𝛿 between the interior plate and the outer plates.

Question 2 (25 pts)

(a) Determine the torque T that causes a maximum shearing stress of 45 MPa in the hollow
cylindrical steel shaft shown. (b) Determine the maximum shearing stress caused by the same torque
T in a solid cylindrical shaft of the same cross-sectional area.

Question 3 (25 pts)

The solid cylinders AB and BC are bonded together at B and are attached to fixed supports at A and
C. Knowing that the modulus of rigidity is 26 GPa for aluminum and 39 GPa for brass, determine
the maximum shearing stress (a) in cylinder AB, (b) in cylinder BC.

Question 4 (25 pts)

The composite shaft shown in the figure is manufactured by shrink-fitting a steel sleeve over a brass
core so that the two parts act as a single solid bar in torsion. The outer diameters of the two parts
are 𝑑1 = 40 𝑚𝑚 for the brass core and 𝑑2 = 50 𝑚𝑚 for the steel sleeve. The shear moduli of
elasticity are 𝐺𝑏 = 36 𝐺𝑃𝑎 for the brass and 𝐺𝑠 = 80 𝐺𝑃𝑎 for the steel.
Assuming that the allowable shear stresses in the brass and steel are 𝜏𝑏 = 48 𝑀𝑃𝑎 and 𝜏𝑠 =
80 𝑀𝑃𝑎, respectively, determine the maximum permissible torque 𝑇𝑚𝑎𝑥 that may be applied to the
shaft.
