Assignment Sheet
Coupling and Cotter Joint

1. A flanged bolt coupling consists of ten 20-mm-diameter bolts spaced evenly around a
bolt circle 400 mm in diameter. Determine the torque capacity of the coupling if the
allowable shearing stress in the bolts is 40 MPa. (Ans. T=25.13 kN.m)

2. A torque of 949 N.m is to be carried by a flanged bolt coupling that consists of eight 12.7
mm diameter steel bolts on a circle of diameter 305 mm and six 12.7 mm diameter steel
bolts on a circle of diameter 229 mm. Determine the shearing stress in the bolts. (Ans. τ
=4.32 MPa (bolts on the outer circle) and τ=3.247 MPa (bolts on the inner
circle))

3. A flanged bolt coupling consists of six 12.7 mm steel bolts evenly spaced around a bolt
circle 305 mm in diameter, and four 19 mm aluminum bolts on a concentric bolt circle
203 mm in diameter. What torque can be applied without exceeding 62 MPa in the steel
or 41 MPa in the aluminum? Assume Gst = 83 GPa and Gal = 28 GPa. (Ans. T=8.81
kN.m for steel and 26.4 kN.m for aluminium)

4. Design an ordinary muff coupling (Fig.1), which is used to connect two steel shafts
transmitting 25 kW power at 360 rpm. The shafts and key are made of plain carbon steel
30C8 (σy = 400 MPa). The sleeve is made of grey cast iron FG 200. Take factor of safety
for shaft and key as 3. For sleeve take factor of safety as 4. Take standard cross section of
flat sunk key as 12 mm x 8 mm. (Ans. diameter of shaft d =40 mm; shear stress
induced in the hub, τ = 19.48 MPa and design key on your own)

to carry a total axial load of 196 kN. Determine the various dimensions shown in the
Fig.2. Take factor of safety 3. Steel bars and cotter are made of plain carbon steel 30C8
(σy= 410 MPa). (Ans. d= 75.37 mm ; t=21.141mm; b=84.79 mm; a=23.9
mm; d1=197.43 mm; c=24 mm)
