Bolted Connections

• The single 200 mm x 10mm steel

pate is connected to a 12 mm
thick steel pate by four 16 mm
diameter rivets as shown in Figure
2 -8 . The rivets used are 502,
Grade 2, hot driven rivets. The
steel is ASTM A36 with Fy = 248
Mpa and Fu = 400 MPa,.
Determine the value of P in all
possible modes of failures and the
safe value of P that the connection
can resist.
• For the lap connection shown in
Figure 2 – 17, the rivets are
19mm diameter and the plates
are 8 mm thick. The rivets used
are 502, Grade 1 and the plates
ASTM A36 with Fu = 400 Mpa.
Determine the value of P in all
possible modes of failure and
the safe vaue of P that he
connection can resist.
510.4.3 Block Shear Strength
• The available strength for the limit state of block
shear rupture along a shear failure path or path
(s) and a perpendicular tension failure path
• A single lap joint is shown
in Figure 2 -19., assuming
Plate 2 has adequate net
area and does not control
the strength, calculate the
governing are for Plate 1.
• Determine the adequacy of the fasteners in Figure 2-27 when
22 mm diameter A325 bots are used in a bearing type
connections with threaded excluded from shear planes.
Assume the strength of column flange and ST section does
not govern the strength
• The connection shown in
Figure 2 -28 consist of 10
A490 bolts and is attached to
the column flange. The bolts
are subject to shear and
tension in a earing type
connection with no threads
in the shear plane. Assume
the strength of column flange
and the plates does not
govern the strength.
a) Investigate the adequacy of
the bolts if P = 300 kN
b) Determine the safe value of
P
Determine the shear
force on the most
stressed fastener in
Figure 2 – 31 if P =
1000 kN
The gusset shown in
Figure 2 -37 is riveted to
the column flange by 16 –
22mm diameter rivet in
single shear. Determine
the stress in the most
heavily – loaded rivet.
The gusset shown in
Figure 2 -39 is riveted to
the column flange by 7 –
20mm diameter rivet in
single shear. Determine
the stress in the most
heavily – loaded rivet.
• For the riveted connection shown in
Figure 2 -41, the allowable shearing
stress in the 25 mm rivets is 140 Mpa.
Assume the plates are adequate to
transmit the load to the rivets. P = 60 KN
1. Determine the shearing stress in the
most stressed rivet.
2. Determine the maximum allowable
value of P.
3. If P = 80 kN, determine the minimum
diameter of rivets.
