Calculate the shear lag factor of the following tension members.

A single-angle tension member has two gage lines In its long leg and one in the short leg for 20
mm bolts arranged shown. Area of the angular section is 5100 mm2. Use A36 steel FY = 248
MPa and Fu = 400 MPa. Standard nominal hole diameter for 20 mm bolt = 23 mm.

 Determine the net area of the angular

section.
 Determine the effective area of the angular
section.
 Determine the ultimate tensile strength of
the angular section based on yielding.
 Determine the allowable tensile strength of
the angular section based on rupture.
Determine the net width. Bolt hole = 28 mm diameter
A W 10 x 12 A-36 steel is bolted by 6 – 16 mm diameter bolt on each flanges as shown. The
section will be used as a tension member. Standard nominal hole diameter for 16 mm bolt = 18
mm.

Properties of W 10 x 12 For a WT 5 x 6

A = 2 284 mm2 ȳ = 34.54 mm

tf = 5.33 mm
tw = 4.83 mm
bf = 100.58 mm
d = 250.70 mm

Determine the allowable tensile strength based on rupture.
Determine the allowable block shear strength.
The butt connection shows 8 – 22 mm diameter bolts spaces as shown below. Steel strengths
are FY = 248 MPa and Fu = 400 MPa. Note: Bolt hole diameter = 25 mm. Calculate the design
tensile strength based on the following:

Based on the gross area of the plate.

Based on the net area of the plate.
Based on block shear strength.
