PROBLEMS

Eg 4) A steel plate is 360 mm wide and 20 mm thick with four bolt holes 25 mm
diameter cut into the plate as shown in the figure. Compute the critical net area An for
observation.
PROBLEMS
Eg 5) A splice plate shown in the accompanying figure consists of a 250 mm x 10 mm
steel plate with 5 rivets having diameter of holes to be 20 mm. A36 is specified with Fy
= 248.8 MPa. Minimum tensile strength Fu = 400 MPa.
a. Compute the effective net area Ae
b. Compute the value of T based on gross area.
c. Compute the value of T based on effective net area.
PROBLEMS
Eg 6) A 175 mm x 100 mm x 18 mm angular section having an area of 4960 mm2 is
connected by two rows of 16 mm dia bolts with a hole diameter of 18.6 mm in the 175
mm leg and one row in the 100 mm leg. Compute the spacing (pitch S) so that two
holes for 16 mm fasteners need be deducted in computing the net area.
PROBLEMS
Eg 7) A single-angle tension member 175
mm x 100 mm x 18 mm has two gage lines
in its long leg and one in the short leg for
16 mm bolts arranged as shown. Area of
the angular section is 4961 mm2. Use A36
steel with Fy = 248 MPa and Fu = 400 MPa.
Use dameter of hole = standard hole
diameter of 16 mm (17mm) + 1.6mm.
Compute the ff:
a. The net area of the angular section for
path ABCDE.
b. The allowable tension strength of the
angular section based on the gross area
c. The allowable tensile strength of the
angular section based on the effective net
area. Reduction Factor U = 0.75
PROBLEMS
Eg 8) From the bolted connection shown in the figure, the steel plates which is 275 mm
x 12 mm is connected by bolts having diameter of hole equal to 2 mm greater than the
25 mm bolts. A36 steel is used with Fy = 248 MPa and Fu = 400 MPa.
a. Compute the shear capacity of the joint if the connection is of bearing type using an
A490 bolts with allowable shearing stress Fv = 276 MPa.
b. Compute the bearing capacity of the joint.
c. Compute the horizontal spacing (pitch) of rivets which will cause the tensile
strength of plates equal for both gross and effective net area. Assume Ae = An.
