EX 1

A W 16 x 58 is connected to W 18 x 31. Use A-36 steel Fy =

248 MPa. Allowable, shearing stress Fv = 0.40 Fy.
A 502 grade hot driven rivets has an allowable shearing
stress of 152 MPa and allowable bearing stress of 1.2 Fu (NSCP).
The support is to be designed using the full strength of W 16 x 58
beam based on the gross section. Fu = 400 MPa.

Properties of sections:
W 16 x 58 W 18 x 31
d=403 mm Flange thickness = 11 mm
Web thickness = 10 mm
a. Compute the minimum diameter of rivets not to exceed allowable shear stress.
b. Compute the minimum diameter of rivets not to exceed allowable bearing stress.
c. Compute the minimum diameter of rivets.

SOLUTION:

Min. diameter of rivets not to exceed allowable shear stress.

V=0.40Fy (d) tw
V=0.40(248) (403) (10)
V = 399,776 N

By shearing of rivets on the W 16 x 58 (double shear)

πd
R = Ss (4)(2)
4
399,776 = 152¿)(4)(2)
d = 20.46 say 22 mm∅

Min. diameter of rivets not to exceed allowable bearing stress.

Fu = 400 MPa
Sb = 1.2 Fu
Sb = 1.2 (400)
Sb = 480
399,776N = 480(d)(10)(4)
d= 20.8 say 22 mm∅

Min. diameter of rivets.

Use 22 mm∅
