Description of Context and Problem:

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, more college students than ever are completing their
research projects, teaching assistant positions, or internships behind their computer screens.

Additionally, due to this virtual transition, it has become increasingly difficult for instructors to
coordinate and advertise these openings, and therefore harder for students to find them.
Historically, obtaining such roles prior to graduation was based on in-person connections with
professors and educators – or through various different listings on campus, whether it’s a flyer,
an email, or on the campus website.

Samford University is located in Alabama and is the 87th oldest university in the United States.
Approximately 5,729 students are currently enrolled. Among those, 3,576 are undergraduate
students, while 2,153 are considered graduate/professional students. The average
undergraduate class size is 18, with a student to instructor ratio of 14:1. Samford University
offers 177 undergraduate majors, minors, and concentrations, and 70 graduate programs. The
full-time faculty percentage at Samford University is 98%.

Our group contacted a former educator, Dr. Hammond, at Samford University, who is required
to take on four* research and/or teaching assistants (*two each semester).
Previously, these students would have been selected by her personal invitation based on the
student’s expressed interest, and/or a student-initiated inquiry, following her mentioning the
opening during an in-person lecture. While Dr. Hammond was still able to obtain her required
number of assistants, the process was extremely difficult due to her, and her students, being off-
campus. The timing was such that she did not know how to promote these opportunities
virtually.

Had the instructor (as well as the institution) been aware of the convenient capabilities of an
online opportunity advertisement platform like Indeed, a more coordinated, standardized, and
professional approach could have been made in advertising these critical opportunities.

Solution
Created in 2004, Indeed was built with the intention of competing alongside the ever-growing
Monster.com and HotJobs. However, by 2010, it became the number one job site that was
visited in the United States (Hayes, 2020).
Presently, Indeed is the “number one job site in the entire world, with over 250 million visitors
every month.”

Figure 1 - About Indeed (source: https://www.indeed.com/about)

Indeed also has a user-friendly app that allows on-the-go access, and the ability to quickly
browse while on a lunch or coffee break. Within the app, students can even turn on alerts to be
immediately informed as soon as a position of interest is available.

Previously, said job postings were only made by an employer (i.e. CEO, HR employee,
manager, etc.), however, Indeed has opened its capabilities to allow any professional
seeking help, aid, or assistance, to post within its platform – in this case, an educator.

While the process is user-friendly and intuitive in design, our group created this job aid
to help first-time users utilize this new feature within the website.

even if they had, Indeed makes this process

The job aid will be developed using the Hannafin-Peck model. The project was created using
the three basic components of the model, assessment, design, and development &
implementation.

1. Assessment:
Using a needs assessment survey, the team was able to identify the needs of the learners
at Samford University. Professors at Samford University completed the survey. Based on
the responses of the needs assessment, job aid was determined to be the best instructional
tool to ensure professors can successfully promote their teaching assistant positions.
