Jess Aesoph- a former Sioux City Heelan High School athlete, was a three-time MVP
in cross country and also track and field. Aesoph still holds St. Ambrose records in the
3,000-meter steeplechase and the indoor 600 meters. He won numerous
championships in the Midwest Classic Conference. Aesoph and his wife, the former
Dawn Keane, now reside in Albuquerque, N.M.

Willie Barney, Class of ’90, of Omaha, consumer sales and marketing manager for the
Omaha World-Herald. From 1986-90 he played football at St. Ambrose, where he was
an academic All-American in 1988, most valuable player in 1989, and made the longest
run from scrimmage in 1989. He graduated cum laude.

Rebecca Maciolek, Class of ’91, of Mesquite, Texas, head golf professional at Tenison
Park Golf Course, Dallas. She played golf from 1987-1991 at St. Ambrose, where she
was a member of the all-conference and all-district teams, and earned several
first-place finishes in various meets and was a national qualifier in 1988 and 1991. In
1995 she became a PGA member, and in 1996 she became a member of the LPGA
teaching and club professional division.

Christopher Payne, Class of ’94, of Davenport, factory manager at HON Co. in


Muscatine, Iowa. He played soccer from 1990-1993 at St. Ambrose, where he was team
captain from 1992-93, made all-conference 1992-93, academic all-conference from
1991-93 and earned honorable mention in District 15 in 1992-93. He currently is head
coach of the Bettendorf Blitz, and has served as a Bettendorf head coach since 1994.

Dominic Rauzi, Class of ’52, of Eveleth, Minn., retired from L.T.V. Steel Mining Co. He
played football all four years at St. Ambrose where he was named to the United Press
All-Star Southern Team and he earned honorable mention on the Catholic All-American
Squad. In 1951-52 he was included in Who’s Who Among Students in American
Universities and Colleges, and in 1951 was vice president of his junior class. In 1992 he
walked 62 miles from Eveleth to Duluth, Minn., in a pro-life fund-raiser. After a hip
replacement in 1997, he speed-walked a full 26.2 marathon in Duluth.

former Immaculate Conception Church in Eveleth. He taught Biology and driver’s
training for one year in Mt. Iron before being drafted to serve his country in the

Mining company, finishing his thirty-eight year career as an assistant general

Barbara Walker, Muscatine, Iowa, a professor of health, physical education and sports
science, has been a member of the St. Ambrose faculty since 1973. She began her
involvement with women’s athletics in 1974, when the university first began its women’s
athletics programs. She has coached volleyball, softball, cheerleading and tennis, and
has been the assistant coach in basketball. During the 1970s, she was the women’s
athletic director. The tennis team went to national competitions every year that she was
the coach.

Dan Zeimet, Class of ’91, of Davenport, assistant director of admissions at St.


Ambrose. As a St. Ambrose student, he ran cross country from 1987-91 and competed
in track and field for two years. Twice he was a national qualifier and three-time most
valuable player for cross country. His time of 27 minutes earned his membership in the
“sub club” for the 8K run. He served as an assistant coach for cross country and track
for three years at St. Ambrose.

Sarah Anderson is in the Hall of Fame for her accomplishments on the softball
diamond, but she was also a standout on the basketball court and soccer pitch. In
softball, she was all-conference for two years in addition to owning a stolen base record.
In high school, her softball accomplishments earned her first-team All-State recognition
as well as being named Quad-City Times Athlete of the Year. In basketball, she won the
Bill Bradley Award while guiding the Bees to a combined record of 97-30 under head
coaches Rhonda Osborn and Robin Becker. Anderson graduated in 1995 and received
her Masters of Physical Therapy in 1997.

Richard “Skip” Berkmeyer was a golfer from 1992-1996. As a member of SAU’s golf
team, he won six intercollegiate tournaments, including the Western Illinois Invitational
in 1996. His list of accomplishments includes NAIA Men’s Golf First Team All-American
in 1994; NAIA Midwest Region Player of the Year in 1995-96; NAIA Midwest All Region
Team in 1993-94; and All-Conference Team from 1992-95. Berkmeyer graduated in
1996.
● “That guy is Skip Berkmeyer. He is to local golf what Tiger Woods was once to
professional golf. After recently capturing the Missouri Golf Association Stroke
Play Championship, Berkmeyer now has 36 titles. And at age 39, he is not getting
older, he's getting better. At Meadowbrook, he played 36 holes on a sweltering
final day, and shot 70-71 for a five-shot win.”

Amy Donnelly McDonald was a member of the St. Ambrose varsity women’s tennis
team from 1983-1987, teams that won the NAIA regionals. From the time she stepped
on the court, McDonald was a success. For three of her years at St. Ambrose, she was
either the No. 1 or No. 2 player, and she earned all-conference honors for the
1986-1987 season. Her outstanding play also helped St. Ambrose win. The Bees team
won districts and went to nationals every year during her college career. McDonald
graduated in 1987.

Ray Doran played on and started for the 1956-57 and 1957-58 St. Ambrose basketball
teams. During his two years, the Bees had a record of 17-31 under head coach Bob
Duax. Doran began his career as a starter at Loyola University (New Orleans) for the
1954-55 and 1955-56 seasons before transferring to St. Ambrose. Following his college
career, Doran taught and coached basketball at Mendel Catholic High School for three
years, then taught at Bowen High School, where he coached football and baseball, for
32 years. Doran graduated in 1958.

Bill Fulton was a part of the St. Ambrose track teams of the 1960s. Under Coach Roy
Owens, Fulton was a four-year letterman from 1962-1966. Fulton was a member of
many record-breaking relay teams. As a freshman, he was part of the team that took
third at Drake Relays, one of the United States biggest track meets held on the Drake
University campus in Des Moines, Iowa. As a senior, Fulton led his relay team to a first
place finish at Drake. Fulton graduated in 1966.

John Klein spent four years as a star on the baseball diamond for the Bees from
1986-1989. His successful career left him with many honors. Klein’s honors include
setting the school record for batting average in a single season with .456 in 1988 and
also setting the school’s single season record for on-base percentage with .595 in 1988.
In addition to his athletic accomplishments, Klein was named a member of the 1988
NAIA Academic All-American Baseball Team with a 3.78 grade-point average on a 4.0
scale. Klein graduated in 1989.

Jim Wolf was an outstanding basketball player at St. Ambrose from 1951-1955. During
his time on the team, the Bees had a record of 69-28 under head coach Bob Duax. His
basketball career really took off in high school when his high school team, St. Paul High
School, won the Illinois High School State Championship in 1950-51. Following his
athletic career with the Bees, Wolf was ordained a Catholic Priest in 1958. From
1974-1998, he worked with Navajo Native American tribes in New Mexico to develop
educational systems and organize community educational schools. Wolf graduated in
1955.

him it was like you knew him forever…He had 15 classes that went through at St.
Francis and he had another 10 to 15 at St. Jude, so there are so many kids who
knew him and played for him.”

Cindy Born Evans of Davenport, Class of 1992, basketball. She is the women’s
basketball coach at Alleman High School in Rock Island. Her honors include NAIA
All-District 15 first team and the National Catholic Basketball All-Tournament first team.
She holds many school records at St. Ambrose, including most blocked shots in a single
season, most career shots blocked, best field goal percentage and eighth overall in
career points.

for Leeco Steel. His honors include SAU offensive player of the year, pre-season
all-American and all-conference. He set numerous records at St. Ambrose, including

Roger Furman of Fountain Hills, Ariz., Class of 1969, basketball and tennis. He is
general manager and tennis pro at La Camarillo Racquet, Fitness and Swim Center in
Scottsdale. His honors include being captain of the St. Ambrose tennis team and
co-captain of the basketball team. While at St. Ambrose, he won numerous regional and
sectional titles in tennis and qualified for nationals his senior year. He was St. Ambrose
University athlete of the year in 1968.

team and was elected conference coach of the year four times during his seven-year

He was named Midwest Classic Conference Coach of the Year in 1996, 1997

Ambrose to top 25 finishes in 1999 and 2000. This year he was in his fifth season
as women's golf coach. Dr. Orfitelli was nominated for Faculty Member of the
Year honors four times. He was inducted into the St. Ambrose Athletic Hall of

Kansas. He continued his education at the University of New Mexico in

then attended the University of Iowa, where he earned his post doctorate degree

Lionel Porter of Fort Wayne, Ind., Class of 1997, football and track. Porter is a
manufacturing supervisor of Depuy Orthopaedics in Fort Wayne. His honors include
all-city first team defensive back, first team all-conference and first team all-American.
He led NAIA Division II in rushing for two years and set numerous team records at St.
Ambrose.

● Suffered a horrible car accident and is currently recovering and becoming
independent again. He hopes to get back into teaching and coaching again once
he is able too.

in his own home with daughter Tenley, 9, means the world to him.”

working with a cane right now.” A series of exercise bars in his garage allows him

radio broadcasts were going in the early 1970s (possibly earlier)
