The periodic table past paper questions-Answers

1 (a)

(i)

(ii)

Cl Fl

(b) ICl is a simple covalent molecule and has weak Van der waals forces or bonds between the
molecules.
(c) The ICl molcules contain isotopes of iodine or chlorine. When different isotopes are added
together, different molecular masses would be obtained.
(d) 2 KI(aq) + Cl2(g) → 2KCl(aq) + I2 (s)

2. (a)
(i) X is more easily ionized that Mg.
Explanation: As the group is descended, the number of shells increases and this causes an increase in
the atomic radius. This increase in atomic radius means that the valence electrons are further from
the nucleus and therefore are attracted less by it. The increase in the number of shells causes
greater shielding of the valence electrons from the nucleus. Both of these factors result in a
decrease in ionization energy down the group
(ii) Cl is a stronger oxidizing agent than Y
Explanation: Atoms higher up in the group accept electrons more readily from atoms of other
elements. As the group is ascended, the number of shells decreases. This means that the outer shell
is closer to the nucleus. As a result there is less shielding and so it is easier for electrons to be added
to the valence shell.

(b)
(i) Similar property: Both X and Y are solids
(ii) different properties: The melting/boiling/density of X is greater than Y
Or X is shiny and Y is dull
Or X is a metal and Y is a non-metal
(c)
(i) Covalent bonding
(ii)

(ii) PY3
Properties can include any two of:
• Low melting point
• Low boiling point
• Insoluble in water
• Soluble in non-polar (organic) solvents
• Does not conduct electricity in solution.
