Student Lesson Plan


EDU 202

Objective: For students to understand what an Alternative Certification is, along with the
background of alternative certifications, the requirements that are needed for a specific state, and
statistics and facts to heighten their knowledge. Students are required to participate in answering
the questions of the day at the beginning of the presentation and the reflection questions at the
end of the presentation.

Material/Equipment: Notebook or paper to take notes, along with pen or pencil and two
highlighters of different colors. PowerPoint Presentation.

Instruction:
● Start out with a warm-up activity to determine how much they know about the subject
beforehand.
● State the objective: Students will be able to understand what an Alternative Certification
is and will be required to participate in answering questions throughout powerpoint.

Closure: : Provide a brief summary on what was taught as a reflection. Answer any questions
asked after the student reflection. Ask students to share what they learned with the class and
what they found the most interesting, useful, or surprising.

Outline for Lesson Plan: Alternative Certifications

Slide 1
● Introduce the Topic of Alternative Teacher Certifications
Slide 2
● Ask the students two questions of the day, where they will answer in their notebooks or
on a piece of paper. Then they will be asked to volunteer and answer the questions of the
day in front of the class. If the students do not know, that is okay because by the end of
the presentation they will.

● In this slide I will define what an Alternative Teacher Certification is and extra
information to allow the students to understand the term better.

● This slide will explain to the students how Alternative Certifications began and why they
became a program. This will give students insight as to when these certifications started
and where the program is at now.

● This slide goes over the basic requirements to complete in order to earn a full license.

● This slide goes over the testing requirements that are needed to pass in order to earn a full

● This slide will give statistics and facts about alternative teacher certifications. This will
allow students to learn interesting or surprising facts that they can use at the end of the
presentation for their reflection.

● On this slide, there is a table that shows the percentage of public elementary and
secondary school teachers, by their route to certification and their race/ethnicity. This
table will be very useful to the students so they can physically see the difference between
the traditional route and the alternative.
Slide 9
● This slide will be used for the students to reflect on the presentation. They will answer
these two questions in their notebooks or piece of paper, with 2-3 sentences each. Then
they will be asked to volunteer and share their reflections with the rest of the class.

Closure: Ask students to share what they learned with the class and what they found the most
interesting, useful, or surprising. This will help students reflect on what they learned, and it will
also help them develop their own ideas on the topic.
