Significance

I have learned that the children should learn how to identify decimals through the number line. In
this way, children will understand how units can be divided into tenths and then into hundreds.
Every concepts need to demonstrate practically to develop interest of children and their better
understanding.

Week 5: Ratios and proportional reasoning

Concepts

1. Changing percentage into equivalent decimal:

Percent means "per 100", so 50% means 50 per 100, or simply 50/100
If we divide 50 by 100 we get 0.5 (which is a decimal number).
So, to convert from percentage to decimal: divide by 100, and remove the "%" sign.
There is an easy way to divide by 100 is to move the decimal point 2 places to the left,
so: From 75% to 0.75(decimal).
2. Solving direct proportion percentage:
Direct Proportions or also known variations are two values x and y which are directly
proportional to each other. When the ratio x: y or is a constant (always remains the same).
This would mean that x and y will either be increased together or decreased together by
an amount that would not change the ratio. As we know that the ratio does not allows you
to change form an equation to find the value of an unknown variable.
3. Using hoc method to express a proportion as a percentage:
To change 4/5 to a percentage, set up the proportion 4/5 = x%/100. Proportions will cross
multiply. Multiply the numerator of the fraction on the left side of fraction by the
denominator of the fraction on the right side: 4*100=400.
Once you have done this step of cross multiplying you can than just actually divide the
answer by first denominator of fraction
Connection
A proportion is an equation that describes that two or more ratios are equal. For example if one
pack of cookies contain 20 cookies that would mean that 2 packs would contain 40 cookies.
The cross products of a proportion are always equal. If we want to look them if two ratios form a
proportion we can just check their cross products which will show the direct relation between
them.
