Data Analysis for Hialeah Miami School

Summative Assessment

The goal of summative assessment is to evaluate student learning at the end of an

instructional unit by comparing it against some standard or benchmark. Summative assessments

are often high stakes, which means that they have a high point value. Based on summative

assessment, one area that needs improvement is the math course from the collected data. There is

a total of 89 students who have failed the math course. A lot of improvement should be made in

this course. Teachers can develop ways of helping the students who are weak to perform much

better by giving them extra assignments and following up to make sure they are done and

performed well. Teachers can also put the students in groups with those performing well to

discuss challenging topics, questions, and how to solve them. However, among the major

contributing factors of poor performance may be absenteeism. It may not be easy for a student to

perform in any lesson if he is always absent when the rest are in-class learning.

Absenteeism should be discouraged as it affects grades to a large extent. Let students

only be absent when unwell or have a pressing matter to attend to. An absent student should be

courageous enough to inquire what the rest learned while he was away and make sure that he

catches up with the rest of the students. Teachers can ask where possible to make sure the absent

students are catching up with the missed lessons. Another cause of poor performance is lack of

discipline. If a student is not disciplined and is put on suspension, it affects his learning program.

While on suspension, he will miss many lessons that will affect his final grade when he sits for

examinations. Students should be encouraged to have good manners and avoid suspension from

school that leads to suspensions. A student who is not disciplined fails to understand the reasons

as to why he is in school and his goals and plans in life.

School Climate

The school's surrounding is a susceptible area that needs to be looked at with much

attention. Learners need a good and conducive environment that is homely and enjoyable to

study from. The teachers and the support staff need a safe and secure environment that can help

them work well and help the students attain better grades. From the data given, there is a

problem with the school building being kept clean and in good condition. A dirty environment

can bring about health complications to both teachers and students. Classrooms need to be in

good condition to allow the students to study without fear of risks, so I for teachers and other

support staff. The school buildings should be well maintained, with structures looking intense,

clean at all times, and well maintained. Old buildings should be renovated or new buildings can

be constructed to replace the old ones. Cleanness should be a top priority in school. Classrooms

should be clean all through, toilets, dining area. The person responsible for cleaning should be

instructed to maintain a clean environment around the school. If not, there will be infections that

may affect students and staff at large.

One key indicator of success for low grades in a math course is improved math grades. If

the number of students who have failed math lessons can come lower, increasing the number of

those who have performed well, it will be showing significant improvement. Students who hate

the math course will start to embrace the course, which will help them perform better. For

climatic indicators, students together with their teachers will be seen happy in school. Everyone

will be sensitive to avoid littering the school surroundings, which will, in turn, reduce the risk of

contracting ailments to do with hygiene. It will also lead to better class attendance.

SMART Goals
4

Performance improvement in Hialeah Miami School can be achieved if some goals are

put in place. The first goal is that interventions should be provided to students who show early

warning or disruptive behavior. Any student showing a sign of Indiscipline should be dealt with

as early as possible. Students join gangs in school, students who start abusing substances and

drugs, students who start missing classes without clear explanations, and students who start

appearing unkempt and with poor hygiene. Teachers should be keen on these early signs and

help them before they find themselves performing poorly or being disciplined until suspended

from school. After consulting two teachers who deal with counseling in the school, I realized that

they are overwhelmed. The school should increase teachers who can counsel the students and

help them have good behavior.

Another goal for the school plan is that teachers should always provide feedback to

improve students’ outcomes. A student is given feedback boosts his confidence in academics and

even behavior. Feedback helps one to know his weak points that he needs to work on. When a

student is given feedback, he can strategize how he can improve to get better feedback. It also

shows that the teachers are concerned about their performance. Feedback helps the students to

gauge if they are on the right track or they should change course. Therefore it has been noted that

teachers at Hialeah Miami School rarely give feedback to their students. Every teacher is

encouraged to embrace giving feedback to every student and help them strategies on getting

better. The school can organize an open day every semester where each student can come with

their parent and have a one-on-one conversation with all the teachers teaching them; teachers

will be expected to share feedback on the student’s performance and improve in their weak areas.

Parents are also encouraged to contribute on ways of making the student improve. It can be

recorded and used for reviewing during the following feedback-giving session.

The above suggestion is expected to be implemented immediately by the school

administration whereby supervision can be done after three months to monitor progress. A year

after, we can do a review to measure the outcome of the implemented strategies.
